Lou Reed - The RCA & Arista Album Collection brings together--for the first time in one comprehensive anthology 16 groundbreaking studio and live album titles written, recorded (and often produced) by Reed as a solo artist following the 1970 dissolution of the Velvet Underground.
Each of the 16 albums (Lou Reed Live Take No Prisoners, from November 1978, fills 2CDs) in the 17 piece library was newly remastered under Lou's direct personal supervision, a long-term project completed shortly before the artist's passing, at 71, on October 27, 2013.
"This box set was Lou's last project. He oversaw the remastering of all of his solo recordings made for RCA and Arista Records....This work was done at New York's Masterdisk in June and July 2013, with engineer Vlado Meller and Rob Santos of Sony/Legacy," Hal Willner wrote in his liner notes for Lou Reed - The RCA & Arista Album Collection. "Everyone who was in that room or around Lou during this period witnessed a beautiful thing as he enthusiastically relived that whole period of his work with the joy of rediscovery, excitedly pointing out subtleties in sounds he hadn t heard in years. In retrospect, reminiscing about these sessions done less than four months before he died, the moments seem even more magnified."
Lou Reed - The RCA & Arista Album Collection--produced by Lou Reed, Rob Santos, and Hal Willner offers fans access to several titles which have been out-of-print, hard-to-find or unavailable in the CD and digital music eras.

Lonnie Smith - Mama Wailer (1971/2013) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

Artist: Lonnie Smith
Title: Mama Wailer
Genre: Jazz, Jazz Blues, Latin Jazz, Soul Jazz, Post Bop, Hard Bop, Jazz Funk
Label: © CTI Records, a division of Creed Taylor, Inc. | King Record Co., Ltd.
Release Date: 1971/2013
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 192kHz/24bit
Source: e-Onkyo
Duration: 00:35:15
Recorded: July 14, 15, 1971 at Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey

Dr. Lonnie Smith's Mama Wailer is one of the quintessential sides issued by Creed Taylor's CTI/Kudu imprint. Out of print for decades on LP, in 2003 it became available again in Japan as a beautifully remastered CD -- as part of King's ambitious reissue project of all things Kudu. Uncharacteristically, Smith played clavinet as well as organ on this set, and arranged all but one track. The rest of the band was comprised of Billy Cobham, Ron Carter, Chuck Rainey, Grover Washington, Jr., Airto, Jimmy Ponder, George Davis, and others. There are only four cuts on Mama Wailer, the title and "Hola Muneca" were written by Smith, the others are covers of pop tunes from the era: Carole King's "I Feel the Earth Move," and Sly Stone's "Stand" -- the latter takes up all of Side Two. Smith's keyboard playing -- particularly on the clavinet, is dirty, greasy, and way-gone funky. He rides Latin grooves on "Hola Muneca," and his B3 collides with the basses and Cobham's dancing, inverted backbeat groove. This is what Latin soul is all about when it meets jazz. The improvisations are in the pocket, but, at the same time, off the page. Here is where boogaloo and hard bop meet headlong. On the King tune, soul-jazz reigns supreme as the B3 administers groove therapy to the rhythm challenge. Elsewhere, as on "Stand," (arranged by Washington), Smith's overdubbed B3s create a wondrously complex harmonic melody as the band moves in behind the beat. A few minutes in (it's almost 20 minutes in length), the ensemble picks up the tempo, and falls into the groove pocket from which all things are possible improvisationally. Two-and-a-half minutes into the tune, the jam unfolds, a soul-jazz deep funky grit that streams and sweats call-and-response lines from one player to the next. For anyone who's ever had reservations about Washington's ability to cut loose as an improviser, they need only to give this track a listen and then apologize to his ghost. As guitars weave in and around the slinky, deep-groove basslines, Smith and Washington trade fours, and then Ponder turns his guitar into an overdrive machine to match Smith line for line, interweaving and intercutting before the whole mutha lifts off at eight-minutes-thirty-seconds and into a James Brown and His Famous Flames riot of soulful funky badness that nonetheless allows for Washington to solo outside on the edges of an over-amped rhythm section. Larry Young - In Paris: The ORTF Recordings (2016) High-Fidelity DSF Stereo DSD128/5.64MHz

Artist: Larry Young
Title: Larry Young In Paris: The ORTF Recordings
Genre: Jazz, Hard Bop, Post Bop, Soul Jazz, Modal Music
Label: © 2xHD/Resonance Records
Release Date: 2016
Quality: DSF Stereo DSD128/5.64MHz
Source: HDTracks
Duration: 01:39:25
Recorded: #1,7 - January 22, 1965; #2-6 - December 8, 1964 at ORTF(Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française) Studios, Paris; #8,9 - February 9, 1965 at the annual gathering of 'L'Académie du jazz' at La Locomotive, Paris

Released here for the first time, 2016's Larry Young in Paris: The ORTF Recordings is something of a lost treasure rediscovered. Recorded while the Newark, New Jersey-born pianist/organist Larry Young was living in France from 1964-1965, these recordings were broadcast once on French public radio and then archived for decades. As a listening experience, The ORTF Recordings are a revelation, showcasing the innovative Young (who died tragically in 1978 at age 38) and his group of equally youthful and talented musicians, including 19-year-old Newark trumpeter Woody Shaw. Technically speaking, half of the tracks were recorded under the leadership of tenor saxophonist Nathan Davis, a fellow Newark native, who had been performing in Paris with saxophonist Eric Dolphy. In fact, it was Davis who first brought Shaw, and later Young and drummer Billy Brooks, to Paris. With their New Jersey backgrounds and shared love of John Coltrane and modernist Hungarian composers like Bartok and Kodaly, this was a group of voraciously intellectual, highly creative musicians on the cusp of greatness. Notably, these sessions prefigure Young's landmark 1965 Blue Note album, Unity, which also featured Shaw. While these recordings are more ad hoc in nature than Unity, one can clearly hear the angular modalism and cutting-edge harmonies that Young and Shaw borrowed from Coltrane, pianist McCoy Tyner, and others, and would then build on it throughout the rest of the '60s into the '70s. This is particularly evident on the two Shaw originals included here, "Beyond All Limits" and "Zoltan," both later re-recorded for Unity. Also engaging are the handful of Young trio numbers here, including his buoyant take on "Mean to Me," which display just how adroit and inventive a keyboardist he was. That said, even cuts like "Talkin' About J.C.," "La Valse Grise," and "Discotheque," recorded here with a group of European musicians gathered together by producer and radio host Jack Dieval, are prime examples of soulful, harmonically aggressive jazz. Ultimately, The ORTF Recordings offer a revealing snapshot of a new breed of jazz musicians, Young and Shaw, who would return to the states on the heels of their time in Paris and revolutionize the sound of modern jazz. --AllMusic Review by Matt Collar

Lalo Schifrin - Black Widow (1976/2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

Release Date: 1976/2016

Recorded: March 29 & 30, 1976 at Mediasound Studios, New York City

Although he is best-known for film scores like Bullitt and Enter The Dragon, prolific composer Lalo Schifrin has always maintained a side career as a jazz musician. He racked up a massive success in this field in 1976 with Black Widow, a slick instrumental excursion that combined the musical dexterity of jazz with the dance-friendly rhythms of disco. This album found Schifrin turning his skills as an arranger and keyboardist to a set of material that matched up some unlikely but effective covers with a few originals. Highlights among the covers include "Quiet Village," which transforms the exotica classic into a slow-burning funk vamp dressed with plenty of spacey synthesizer, and "Moonglow & Theme From Picnic," which reworks these classic film themes by giving them keyboard-driven arrangements that are gently nudged along by an insistent beat. Black Widow also spawned a dancefloor hit with Schifrin's imaginative reworking of "Jaws," which transformed John Williams' spooky monster-movie theme into an ominous, percolating slice of nocturnal funk built on wah-wah guitar and Schifrin's elegantly jazzy keyboard excursions. In terms of the original tunes, the standout is the title track, a keyboard showcase that weaves surging strings around a funky bass groove that is fleshed out with all manner of synth and electric piano shadings. The strong disco edge to the proceedings may turn off jazz purists, but Schifrin's imaginative and stylish arrangements keep the music from succumbing to disco-beat boredom, and his expert backup band (including session stalwarts like Andy Newmark and John Tropea) attacks the material with energy and style to burn. The end result is one of the peak albums in Lalo Schifrin's lengthy catalogue and a necessity for anyone interested in his jazz work. --AllMusic Review by Donald A. Guarisco

Jazz is his passion, a passion which first flourished playing in the company of such masters as Ray Brown, Lennie Niehaus and Buell Neidlinger. Eastwood went on to produce a wonderful series of albums for the Candid label, whilst also composing music for several of his dad's films including Letters from Iwo Jima and Gran Torino. Cantata Memoria commemorates through new music the Aberfan tragedy of October 21, 1966, when 116 children and 28 adults tragically lost their lives as a coal tip enveloped Plant Glas school, together with some houses, in Aberfan, South Wales.

This large-scale choral work in English, Welsh and Latin has been commissioned by S4C, the Welsh language TV channel, to mark the 50th anniversary of what has become known to subsequent generations both in the UK and around the world as the Aberfan Disaster.

The work will be premiered with the exact-same cast as on the record at the official Aberfan Charitable Trust Memorial Concert, to be held at the Wales Millennium Centre, on October 8, 2016.

The first half features music by Karl Jenkins and others, and words/poetry read by actress Sian Phillips and actor Michael Sheen, whilst the second half will premiere Cantata Memoria.

Though written to commemorate a specific and profoundly sad event, the emotions and themes housed within this special music can resonate beyond: Loss, then the transition from darkness into light are truly universal occurrences.

Nonesuch Records releases saxophonist Joshua Redman and pianist Brad Mehldau's Nearness, the longtime friends' and collaborators' first duo album, on September 9, 2016. Nearness, a selection of duets recorded live during their recent European tour, is available for pre-order now at iTunes and in the Nonesuch Store, where an instant download of the album track “Ornithology” is included with purchase. You can hear the track and find out where the duo will be performing together this fall below; for all the latest tour details, visit
Brad Mehldau first came to prominence as a member Joshua Redman's quartet in the 1990s before becoming a bandleader himself. The pair first reunited in 2010 when Redman was featured on Mehldau's album Highway Rider. In 2013, Mehldau was featured as a performer and producer on Redman's Walking Shadows.
"It's like one of those friendships where you don't see someone for a long stretch and then you fall right back where you left off," Mehldau told the Ottawa Citizen when he and Redman performed at the city's jazz festival in 2011. According to the Citizen's Peter Hum, these two friends are "among the most potent and influential jazz instrumentalists of their generation, and what Mehldau calls 'picking up' is in fact world-class improvising before rapt audiences."
Each artist has recorded extensively for Nonesuch, with a wide variety of collaborators. Brad Mehldau's label debut was the 2004 solo disc Live in Tokyo and includes six records with his trio: House on Hill, Day Is Done, Brad Mehldau Trio Live, Ode, Where Do You Start, and Blues and Ballads. His collaborative records on the label include Love Sublime, Highway Rider, Metheny Mehldau, Metheny Mehldau Quartet, Modern Music, and Mehliana: Taming the Dragon. Mehldau's additional solo albums on Nonesuch include Live in Marciac and last year's 8-LP/4-CD 10 Years Solo Live, which the New York Times says "contains some of the most impressive pianism he has captured on record."
Joshua Redman's first album on Nonesuch was the Grammy-nominated Momentum, released in 2005. His other releases on the label include Back East, Compass, and Trios Live, all of which explore the trio format; MoodSwing, originally released in 1994 with Redman's own band, including Mehldau, and re-released by Nonesuch in 2009; Walking Shadows, his first recording to include an orchestral ensemble, from 2013; and The Bad Plus Joshua Redman, his 2015 collaboration with the acclaimed trio, which the New York Times called "a knockout" and NPR called "a roaring and beautiful summit meeting." In 2004, he was a founder of the SFJAZZ Collective, an eight-piece, multi-generational ensemble of accomplished musicians. Since 2009, Redman has been performing with a new collaborative group called James Farm, whose members also include pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Matt Penman, and drummer Eric Harland. The group has two releases on Nonesuch; their self-titled album from 2011, and City Folk, released in 2014.
