Melodiya presents a set of selected symphonies by Gustav Mahler interpreted by Kirill Kondrashin and Alexander Sladkovsky. Almost fifty years separate the recording of these interpretations. The name of Kirill Kondrashin is linked with the everlasting glory of the Moscow philharmonics the orchestra that became one of the best collectives of the former Soviet Union under his leadership. Kondrashin not only resumed the tradition of Russian Mahleriana that had been interrupted by the Soviet ideologists of music for three decades - he actually rediscovered the world of Mahlers music for the domestic audience. Peoples Artist of Russia Alexander Sladkovsky is among the best known conductors of modern Russia. He was the one who resuscitated the State Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of Tatarstan (former Tatar ASSR) and won the recognition in this country and overseas during his six-year leadership. Just as Kondrashin did, Sladkovsky possesses an extensive repertoire, devotes much attention to contemporary music and achieves the highest technique and combination of emotional uplift with academic strictness in his interpretations. Mahler and Shostakovich take a special place in the modern maestros music pantheon. While Mahlers First, Fifth and Ninth symphonies recorded by Sladkovsky and his orchestra in 2016 preserve the traits of Kondrashins tradition, they also capture the conductors distinction as his art is addressed to todays listeners.

A century before the demonically inspired caricatures of Paganini appeared, Pietro Locatelli was already pushing the boundaries on what was possible on the violin. His landmark Opus 3 publication, subtitled “The Art of the Violin,” includes 12 concertos and 24 caprices that continue to test the mettle of all who would dare perform them. This Turtle Records album features violinist Sandrine Cantoreggi with the Latvian Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra under Carlo Jans in performances of the Fifth, Eleventh, and Twelfth concertos of Op. 3.

Surprisingly enough, it is the orchestra — not the soloist — that is of primary enjoyment on this CD. The Latvian ensemble proves that though its name may be relatively unknown to U.S. audiences, it certainly should be. Its playing is extremely precise in every domain possible — articulation, intonation, dynamics — and the recorded sound quality is exceptionally warm and full. Cantoreggi’s playing is two-sided. While playing lower in her instrument’s range and in combination with the orchestra, her sound is pleasing enough and intonation is as solid as the orchestra’s.

The solo cadenzas and capriccios, which find the violin in the stratosphere of its range, show a more strained, shrill, and out-of-tune side to Cantoreggi’s playing. Since it is this bravura demonstration that is supposed to enthrall listeners, Cantoreggi’s struggles with it to make this album a less-than-ideal choice. Others (most notably Carmignola) have shown us that it is possible to play Locatelli’s fiendish masterworks with ease and warmth.

The fascinating album is devoted to a trio of 18th-century musicians who may be said without any exaggeration to have so exhausted the violin’s potential that their 19th-century spiritual successor, Nicolò Paganini, needed to do little more than consolidate that potential and refine the performer’s technique. The musicians in question are Jean-Marie Leclair (the ANGEL), Pietro Locatelli (the DEVIL), and Antonio Vivaldi (the PRIEST). Leclair's Violin Concerto in G minor op. 10 no. 6 selected for this CD is the composer's last concerto for the instrument and at the same time the most demanding that he wrote for the violin. Also included are Leclair’s three “Airs des démons” from his only opera Scylla et Glaucus, in which the use of different metres in the third “Airs des démons” is particularly interesting, for this is a trick that Leclair uses to suggest that the demons are deliberately disrupting the rhythm of the number. No Italian violinist before Locatelli had produced such breath-taking effects on his instrument. Concerto no. 7 no. 6 (“Il pianto d’Arianna”) that is included in this volume is an extraordinary piece from every point of view, starting with Locatelli’s use of the different keys, to say nothing of his treatment of the solo violin and even the concerto’s formal design. Vivaldi was dubbed 'the Red Priest' by his contemporaries on account not only of the colour of his hair but also because of the fact that he was ordained a priest at the age of twenty-five. The Double Violin Concerto in D minor RV 514 that is featured in the present recording is one of Vivaldi’s most beautiful and at the same time technically demanding compositions.

In March 2017, Warner Classics marks the 10th anniversary of Mstislav Rostropovich’s death and 90 years since his birth with the deluxe collectors’ box set Cellist of the Century, comprising of selected remastered recordings.
The label was given unprecedented access to Rostropovich’s personal archive and worked closely with his daughters Elena and Olga. The range and variety of music in the box set is nothing short of extraordinary, embracing works by more than 60 composers, from iconic recordings to rarities. A number of the live performances originate from Russian tapes saved from destruction by resourceful Soviet archivists when Rostropovich was exiled from the USSR (1974-1990), and which came back to light in the late 1990s. Another highlight is the complete Bach Cello Suites, presented here in both audio and video versions. The collection also features an exclusive audio interview of Rostropovich recorded by personality Jon Tolansky.
Although Rostropovich died 10 years ago, on 27 April 2007, he remains a powerful presence on the world’s cultural scene through his legacy as the greatest cellist of his time, as a brave advocate of human rights, and as a man of proverbial generosity and charisma.
Special care has been taken to ensure the highest quality of sound reproduction. Wherever possible, the engineers of Art et Son studios have refined the sound, always with scrupulous respect to the original sources. The analogue recordings originating from EMI and Erato (CD1-15) have been remastered in 96 kHz from the original tapes. These are, therefore, the first recordings where the presence and definition of sound are heard in such detail.

John Mayer first teased his seventh album, The Search for Everything, through a pair of EPs that contained eight of the record's 12 songs. It was a sly way for the singer/songwriter to ease back into his soulful side, a sound he largely abandoned during an extended dalliance with Laurel Canyon country-rock -- an infatuation that culminated in his position as a substitute Jerry Garcia in the Grateful Dead satellite group Dead & Company. Although it's ostensibly a breakup album, The Search for Everything doesn't feel haunted: Mayer glides through the record so smoothly, the supple sound seems almost insouciant. It is also quite alluring. Mayer may be reverting to the sound of Continuum, alternating between R&B workouts and soul-baring ballads, but forward movement is the unifying sentiment here. The nimble funk opener, "Moving on and Getting Over," makes that plain, as does the plaintive "Changing," which summarizes his plight simply: "I may be old and I may be young/But I am not done changing." Some of Mayer's change can be charted in how he hangs onto his romantic past, burying some of his heartache on the deceptively exuberant opener, "Still Feel Like Your Man," and offering a bittersweet denouement in the admission "You're Gonna Live Forever in Me." Mirroring his emotional maturity is a sharpening of his songcraft. While he's always shown a knack for slow-burning soul, the progression and arrangement of the smoldering "Rosie" feel as sophisticated as the lithe grace of "Emoji of a Wave," while "Roll It on Home," an easy-rolling country-rocker that tips its hat to the Dead, shows how he absorbed the lessons of his Laurel Canyon detour of Born and Raised and Paradise Valley. Those two records, along with such earlier workouts as Try! John Mayer Trio Live in Concert, reveal the extent of Mayer's ambition, but The Search for Everything succeeds because he's not donning a new costume: instead, he's settling into a groove he can claim as his own, and it feels like he's at home. --AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Composer and performer Joep Beving, one of the most listened-to living pianists in the world, is joining Deutsche Grammophon to release his new album ‘Prehension’ on 7th April.
Dutch musician Joep (pronounced ‘Yoop’) is a towering figure in the streaming world – and in real life too, thanks to his two-metre frame (nearly 6’10), wild hair and flowing beard. He has become a one-man success story – writing, recording and releasing his debut album ‘Solipsism’ (now available digitally on DG) which has been streamed nearly 60 million times.
Joep’s delicate melodies instantly struck a chord with listeners when tracks from the album first appeared on streaming music playlists alongside the likes of Max Richter, Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm.
“I call it ‘simple music for complex emotions’,” says Joep, summing up its universal appeal. “The world is a hectic place right now and I feel a deep urge to reconnect on a basic human level with people in general. Music as our universal language has the power to unite.”
Each track on ‘Solipsism’ was recorded at dead of night in the kitchen of his home in Amsterdam, while his partner and two young daughters slept, played on the German piano he had been left by his late grandmother.
Finally the music reached the ears of DG when a friend of Joep’s played the album in her local bar in Berlin – where one of the label’s executives happened to be – and ended up in a signing with the world’s foremost classical label.
The first fruits of the new partnership are ‘Prehension’. A natural successor to ‘Solipsism,’ it carries forward the musical and philosophical themes Joep identifies in his music. Understated, haunting and melancholic, its delicate melodies will help soothe the soul.

The New York Times tagged Jimmy Raney as “one of the most gifted and influential postwar jazz guitarists in the world”. After working with the likes of Stan Getz and Red Norvo in the 1950’s, Raney found himself working in pit bands and backing singers in order to support his family. His inability to find a creative outlet in New York coupled with abusive drinking sent Raney back to his hometown Louisville, Kentucky in late 60’s. This 1974 MPS album represents Raney’s return to the forefront of jazz guitarists. Two top jazz musicians partner with Raney. Bassist Richard Davis’ credentials include such disparate players as Eric Dolpy, Sarah Vaughn and singer Van Morrison. Rolling Stone called Davis’ playing on Morrison’s Astral Weeks “the greatest bass ever heard on a rock album”. Drummer Alan Dawson worked with Dave Brubeck and Sonny Rollins. Momentum highlights Raney’s sophisticated chords and flowing melodic lines, and Raney and Davis render poignant interpretations of the beautiful ballad Autumn in New York. The quick and clean The Best Thing for You is Me features Dawson’s scintillating brush solo. Nobody Else but Me sways comfortably with a bossa beat, and Raney’s We’ll Be Together silhouettes the guitarist at his expressive, romantic best. Just Friends flows with just the right bittersweet feel – sad that it’s over, but then, there is the pleasure of knowing you can listen to Raney and partners again and again.

Boot-stomping, spur-jangling highlights include a rousing performance of "Wait For Me", Jimmy Reed-inspired "Boss Man" and a spirited rendition of "Wagon Wheels".
