"Isabelle Faust has never cultivated the whale-boned red-carpet glamour that many female soloists feel obliged to pursue. On stage and off, the German violinist's manner is relaxed, her style understated. She sports a gamine, Jeanne d'Arc crop and, save for the tell-tale violinist's love-bite just below her jaw, you might guess her to be an architect or an academic. In a way, she is both, for an appreciation of musical structure and an interest in historical research are integral to her work. The stillness of focus and purity of sound that has distinguished her playing can be heard in a repertoire stretching from Beethoven and Schubert through to Hartmann and Ligeti, on modern and period strings. Where other violinists dazzle, Faust is a thinker. On the subject of her own individual sound, she is hesitant: "Of course, I'm trying to be me in whatever repertoire I'm playing, and I do think that my work is different from that of other violinists -- but actually I'm never really trying to keep to this idea of an individual sound. It's always my goal to get a different interpretation and also a different kind of voice particular to the voice of the composer." Anna Picard - The Guardian

In 2004, he said that his album Solo Piano was a project that had relieved him of a variety of complexes that he had had about the relationship of his music to his character. How to sum up this singer, musician, entertainer? This record with a strong whiff of Satie solved a lot of problems, Jason Beck alias Chilly Gonzalez said at the time... A good decade later, this brilliant Canadian Zebedee bounds between passports, costumes, locations, eras and styles, always one step ahead of getting pigeonholed into a single role or genre. But he regularly returns to this solo, introspective work, as if compelled. This time, Solo Piano III rounds off what he describes as a trilogy. "The musical purity of Solo Piano III is not an antidote for our times", he says, "it is a reflection of all the beauty and ugliness around us. "

Benjamin Alard and Gerlinde Saman – J.S. Bach: The Complete Works for Keyboard, Vol. 1 (2018) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/88,2kHz

Passionate about the world of Johann Sebastian Bach, this young man, "reserved, with an understated sense of humour", has undertaken a complete recording of the Cantor's keyboard works for harmonia mundi. The project is vast, and has never before been completed by a single musician. Benjamin Alard's very original approach is based on the idea of taking on this vast catalogue split into fourteen chapters, following the timeline of the composer's life, describing his influences, his travels and his professional choices. Every volume is to be thought of as a series of episodes retracing the life and works of the Cantor of Leipzig. This first volume paints a picture of "the young heir", whose music is still very much a tribute to his predecessors, such as Georg Bhm, Johann Kuhnau, Tomaso Albinoni, Johann Pachelbel, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Louis Marchand and Johann Jakob Froberger. The instruments used for this complete recording have been selected, thankfully, with great care. Recorded in May 2017, this first volume uses the Silberman organ in Sainte-Aurlie in Strasbourg, a superb instrument built in 2017, which benefited from a magnificent restoration in 2015, to mark its tricentenary. As for the harpsichord, it is a modern instrument produced by manufacturer mile Jobin, inspired by models from Ruckers and Dulcken. A young man of his times, Benjamin Alard accompanies this complete works with an original idea: every work is recorded and published separately on streaming and download sites (like Qobuz), along with videos on social media. - Franois Hudry (more…)

Maria Joao Pires, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Daniel Harding – Beethoven – Piano Concertos Nos. 3 & 4 (2014) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/48kHz

This release on the Onyx Classics label has no right to be as good as it is. Pianist Maria-Joo Pires, 70 years old when the album appeared in 2014, has never been known as a Beethoven specialist. The Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra under Daniel Harding is a competent group, surely, but hardly on Europe's or even Scandinavia's A-list. The Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37, and Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58, hardly lack for varied and incisive interpretations. Yet there it is: this one delivers ideas that nobody else has offered before. In a nutshell, Pires makes the piano the quiet partner to a rather martial orchestra in these works. The Third Concerto loses its epic quality and has Pires offering gentle answers to the orchestra's turbulent phrases, with a slow movement that brings to mind Pires' true specialty: Chopin. The tempos are generally deliberate, and the long opening movement of the Piano Concerto No. 3 gives the feeling that every note fits into a larger structure. The overall effect is wondrously lyrical, yet very well controlled on the part of both soloist and conductor, who seem really to have worked these performances out together. Those who really do not like low-key Beethoven might think twice about this, but even so might find it extraordinary.

"My heart skipped a beat when [The Italian Job] from La Serenissima and Adrian Chandler landed on my desk, such was my enjoyment of their Gramophone Awards-shortlisted Vivaldi Four Seasons recording (AV2344). So to discover that with this all-Italian assortment of sinfonias and concertos they've actually topped their 2016 triumph -- and apparently effortlessly -- gives me no small amount of pleasure." So said the reviewer of the Gramophone Award-winning release, and the Vivaldi specialists are set to triumph once again with Vivaldi x2, an astonishing medley of double concertos for hunting horns, oboes, bassoon, violin and cello. Emanating from Vivaldi's pen the double concerto -- a genre of which he all but cornered the market -- resulted in some of the composer's most colourful and exuberant works. In the hands of two-time Gramophone Award-winning La Serenissima, these concertos come to virtuosic and effervescent life.

Arriving a year after 2017's Out in the Storm -- Waxahatchee's most defiant album of her first four -- the Great Thunder EP offers a drastic contrast to its predecessor's crunchy, full-band indie rock. Presenting Katie Crutchfield's sparest material since her 2012 Waxahatchee debut, the EP's six tracks were selected from the handful of releases she wrote and performed as half of Great Thunder, her duo with onetime Swearin' bassist and Waxahatchee touring drummer Keith Spencer. She reworks the songs here, stripping down arrangements to minimal piano or, in two cases, guitar, with occasional light touches of electronic keyboards, bass, and percussion. The opening track, "Singer's No Star," opts for simple piano chords and a few backing vocals as accompaniment. The song was taken from Great Thunder's final release, The Great Thunder Radiator Hospital Wedding Album, which was home-recorded in 2014 with Radiator Hospital's Sam Cook-Parrott. The original version, while still warm and wistful, was delivered via a full-band arrangement that included multiple guitar solos as well as lead vocals by Cook-Parrott. Crutchfield's redo essentially moves the song from the garage of a group of Big Star disciples into the living room of a singer/songwriter with affection-infused grievances. It should be noted that these are not home recordings; rather, the EP was tracked at Justin Vernon's April Base studios in Wisconsin with Megafaun's Brad Cook. Nevertheless, imperfect, immediate performances, along with melodies that sometimes push Crutchfield into her upper range, intensify the raw intimacy of the EP and the vulnerability inherent in most of the songs. Over the course of Great Thunder, her voice seems to more naturally complement the guitar, and the guitar entries "Chapel of Pines" and "Slow You Down" are among the EP's highlights, also offering its most fleshed-out arrangements. Lacking the intensity of her main catalog, Great Thunder plays out more like an addendum that an essential Waxahatchee recording, but the songs are still worth discovery.

These days, it's hard to imagine Van Halen being described as an opening act or an unsigned band. But back in 1976, the heavy metal/hard rock combo was, in fact, the opening act when U.F.O. headlined the Golden West Ballroom in Norwalk, CA (a Los Angeles suburb). At that point, Van Halen had yet to sign with Warner Bros. or become internationally famous, although it was a hot local attraction in Southern California and could easily fill West Hollywood clubs like the Starwood and the Whiskey-a-Go-Go. Another term you often heard in connection with them in those days was "cover band"; Van Halen was writing a lot of original material in 1976, but many of its gigs required some covers. This was true of the headbangers' opening set for U.F.O., which is the focus of this bootleg CD. With David Lee Roth singing lead, they deliver an inspired set that ranges from original gems ("On Fire," "Somebody Get Me a Doctor," and "I'm the One") to covers of Led Zeppelin's "The Rover," Aerosmith's "Last Child," and ZZ Top's "Tush." Collectors will be thrilled to know that Golden West Ballroom: Live 1976 was taped from the venue's soundboard and offers very good sound quality, and that several of the tunes are rare originals that never made it to any of Van Halen's official studio albums (including "Let Me Swim in Your Ocean," "Let's Get Rockin'," and "We Die Young"). Throughout the set, they come across as inspired and extremely promising, if undeveloped -- in 1976, the Angelinos had yet to receive the guidance that Warner Bros.' A&R department would provide. But despite its imperfections, this bootleg is fascinating if you're a serious Van Halen collector.
