This is a tribute to the master of minimal music, legendary Philip Glass, who turns 80 on 31.01.2017. A year ago Philip Glass handpicked some pianists to perform all of his Etudes together at the Barbican in London. Víkingur Ólafsson was one of them and according to the press he was “the highlight of the evening” (Sean and Heard International). The Financial Times claimed: “Best of all was Ólafsson in the supersensitive stillness of Etude 5”. Víkingur Ólafsson is an up-and-coming visionary pianist not only of technical sublimity but also of remarkable entrepreneurial abilities. Besides his growing career as a traditional concert pianist Víkingur Ólafsson has also collaborated with a range of contemporary composers and artists like Olafur Arnalds and Björk.

Allan Pettersson - Symphony No.14 - Norrkoping Symphony Orchestra, Christian Lindberg (2017) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Сomposer: Allan Pettersson (1911–1980)
Artist: Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, Christian Lindberg
Title: Pettersson - Symphony No.14
Genre: Classical
Label: © BIS Records AB
Release Date: 2017
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit

Duration: 52:38
Recorded: January 2016 at the Louis de Geer Concert Hall, Norrköping, Sweden

In their series of Allan Pettersson’s symphonies, Christian Lindberg and the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra have arrived at the Fourteenth Symphony, completed in 1978 and given its first performance in 1981, one year after the death of the composer. As several of its predecessors, No. 14 is in one extended movement and is scored for large forces, including an expanded percussion section. But there are also important traits that set it apart. Pettersson, who had studied twelve-tone composition for
René Leibovitz in the early 1950’s, never adopted the technique fully but in the present work the traces are more evident than in his other symphonies: the opening few bars contain all of the notes of the chromatic scale, and throughout the work Pettersson makes extensive use of compositional techniques associated with twelve-tone music. In several earlier works, Pettersson had alluded to his song cycle ‘Barefoot Songs’, but in the present symphony he quotes himself extensively – the melody of Klokar och knythänder (Wise Men and Clenched Hands) appears no less than five times in its entirety and becomes crucial to the structure of the symphony. The present disc is the sixth instalment in a series that has received distinctions such as Empfehlung (klassik-heute.de), Clef d’or 2011 (ResMusica.com), isco excepcional (Scherzo) and Critics’ Choice (Gramophone). Included with the new recording is a bonus DVD containing a film produced by Swedish Television after the death of the composer. In the course of the film, here provided with English subtitles, we meet the composer himself, members of his family, colleagues from his time as an orchestral player and musicians such as the violinist Ida Haendel.

Artist: Paulien van Schaik, Hein Van de Geyn, Bert Joris Immediately, as you listen to the first few bars of Gershwin's Embraceable You, you know that this album is very special. A short, unpretentious yet exquisite, intro by the Belgian trumpeter Bert Joris is followed by the sonorous bass sound of Hein Van de Geyn and the clear voice of Paulien van Schaik. The trio is complete. It is the introduction to an album full of jewels. And those jewels are a repertoire of classic standards such as Moonlight in Vermont, The Man I Love, Imagination and many other beautiful songs. Here we hear chamber music of the highest caliber and in a pure jazz idiom.
Did Hein and Paulien touch on "the naked truth" with their first CD "Tenderly", as Hein said himself; with Bert Joris a perfect harmonious unity emerges, enhanced by the beautiful melodic lines that Paulien sings against the trumpet melodies. The great quality of Paulien is her deep respect for the way the melodies have been written by their composers. Lyrics and music as equals, interpreted by three passionate musicians.

Leo Ornstein - Piano Quintet & String Quartet - Marc-Andre Hamelin, Pacifica Quartet (2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Duration: 72 minutes 47 seconds
Recorded: April 2014, Henry Wood Hall, London, United Kingdom

The young pianist-composer Leo Ornstein went from wowing the ladies with his virtuosity to writing a Violin Sonata in 1915 of such atonal violence that it frightened even him.
By the time of the two works recorded here his style was more rounded. The mix of enfant terrible and Lisztian piano-slayer is now tempered by an intense lyricism, the rhythmic energy balanced by searing poetry.
In the exhilarating hands of Marc-André Hamelin and the Pacifica Quartet these performances fizz with exuberance. A real treat.

This release features a cover of Earth, Wind & Fire's "Serpentine Fire," which was originally recorded with East's brother Marcel in 1991 with Eric Clapton on guitar and Phil Collins on drums. Moogie, East's longtime engineer, who mixed the original cinematic cover, discovered the track 25 years later, and after a long search for the tapes, finally uncovered them in Patti Austin's basement. After the tape was digitally remastered, the three Earth, Wind & Fire members sang (Philip Bailey), played additional bass parts (Verdine White), and added percussion (Ralph Johnson) to the track, resulting in a daring, head-turning, cinematic journey. As a founding member of renowned contemporary jazz quartet Fourplay, Nathan East is one of the world's most recorded session bassists. With over 2,000 album credits to his name and several GRAMMY-winning songs including "Get Lucky," "Footloose" and "Change the World," East has performed with artists including Daft Punk, Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston & Beyonce.
