A major figure of 18th century musical Europe, Telemann enjoyed in his time a bigger reputation even than Bach. This great master of instrumental music, open to French and Italian influences and to the new galant style that flourished in Germany, succeeded with considerable panache, especially in his chamber music, in creating a synthesis of European styles at the crossroads between Baroque and Classicism.

Early Music Review: “This has got to be one of my recommendations of the month – flawless playing from all concerned…both in the suavity of sound, the perfect balance and neat interplay between the voices, and the keen sense of drama they bring to Telemann’s outstanding chamber music.”

Since winning the 11th International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1998, Denis Matsuev has established a reputation as one of Russia's leading pianists. His début release on the Mariinsky label featuring Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No 3 and Paganini Variations, received widespread acclaim. His second Mariinsky release featured piano concerts by Shostakovich and Shchedrin, which was awarded Clef du Mois by ResMusica and ***** by Audiophile Audition. For his third release, Matsuev turns to the music of Tchaikovsky, with the two Piano Concertos. His first Piano Concerto is one of his most popular works: Tchaikovsky balances core motivic elements with a sense of lyrical spontaneity to create a technically challenging but instantly appealing work.
The Piano Concerto No.2 was dedicated to pianist Nikolai Rubinstein, with whom the composer had a close working relationship. Tchaikovsky wrote, “I want to dedicate it to N. G. Rubinstein in recognition of his magnificent playing of my First Concerto and of my Sonata, which left me in utter rapture after he performed it for me in Moscow.” After a tremendous piano cadenza in the first movement, Tchaikovsky allows other instruments to shine, with prominent solos for violin and cello in the second movement.
Other Tchaikovsky recordings on the Mariinsky label include a DVD/Bluray release of his last three symphonies, and 2011 Tchaikovsky Competition winner Daniil Trifonov’s interpretation of the first Piano Concerto on SACD.
In March and April Denis Matsuev joins the London Symphony Orchestra and Valery Gergiev for a European tour, with concerts in London, Paris and Turin.

Slipknot singer Corey Taylor knew his band was destined for greatness. He also knew that it wouldn't come easy.
"When we were starting out, we had all these strikes against us," he says. "We were from Iowa, there were nine of us, we wore masks, we wore coveralls, we played metal. Hard metal."
"It was tough getting people to come out to Des Moines," adds bassist Paul Gray. "I don't know why, it's a pretty cool place. But A&R dudes - jaded folks from Los Angeles or New York - it's hard to get them to come to Iowa."
"And then there were all the haters," says Taylor.
Ah, the haters. The people who liked nothing more than to give the band flack for its look, for substituting numbers for names, for putting on a show full of over-the-top chaos and unmitigated mayhem. Some of the comments came from the usual assortment of web sites and so-called music critics. But, surprisingly, "we also took a lot of shit from other bands," says guitarist James Root. "When we hit the road with Ozzfest in 1999, I heard a lot of condescending remarks from other musicians. They were saying, 'Slipknot won't sell enough records, they won't survive, they've got too many people, nobody's gonna get it, they're all about image.'"
"The joke's on them," says Taylor with wicked glee. "Our music stood up. We're much more popular now and it wasn't because of our image. It was the music."
Slipknot - which features DJ Sid Wilson (0), drummer Joey Jordison (1), Gray (2),percussionist Chris Fehn (3) Root (4), sampler Craig Jones - 133 (5), percussionist M. Shawn Crahan - Clown (6), guitarist Mick Thomson (7) and Taylor (8) - is still heavy, still enamored of great, big walls of deeply textured layers of sound. But this time, they've approached their music with an eye towards stylistic expression that completely invalidates any and all comments about heavy metal clichés. Moreover, they've continued the exploration of melody that began on their first record.

To many, the Lahti Symphony Orchestra has become synonymous with excellence in Sibelius repertoire. Its numerous recordings with the previous chief conductor Osmo Vänskä have received countless distinctions and awards, and the orchestra is universally regarded as having a very special affinity for the music of their great compatriot.
On the present disc it is Okko Kamu, Vänskä's successor as chief conductor, who wields the baton. Kamu has been a presence on the international scene ever since the early 1970s, when he made a highly-acclaimed set of Sibelius symphonies in partnership with Herbert von Karajan.
Here three other works by Sibelius make up the programme, which opens with music for Shakespeare's play The Tempest, for which the composer in 1925 wrote the most ambitious of his several theatre scores. For concert use he later selected the Overture and two Suites recorded here. In 1926, a year after The Tempest, Sibelius again turned to the realm of magic in his masterful evocation of the forest, the symphonic poem Tapiola. The title can be translated as ‘the domain of Tapio’, god of the forest in Finnish mythology, and according to Walter Damrosch, who conducted the first performance, the audience was ‘enthralled by the dark pine forests and the shadowy gods and wood-nymphs who dwell therein’. From the start the work has been regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces from Sibelius’ pen. These two large-scale works are here separated by the seven-minute long symphonic poem The Bard from 1913, a work which in its treatment of the thematic material and the chamber-music-like quality of its scoring invites comparison with the Fourth Symphony of two year’s earlier.

Jean Sibelius - Lemminkainen Suite, The Wood Nymph - Sinfonia Lahti, Osmo Vanska (2014) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/44.1kHz

Jean Sibelius is best known for his seven symphonies and violin concerto – two genres usually thought of as ‘absolute music’. But in 1894, well before he composed his first symphony, Sibelius described himself in quite different terms: ‘really I am a tone painter and poet’. It was around this time that he was working on the two works presented here, both tone poems which spring from an extra-musical inspiration. The source of the Lemminkäinen Suite is the Finnish national epic Kalevala, and its four movements – of which especially The Swan of Tuonela is often performed separately – tell of the adventures of the young hero Lemminkäinen: his amorous escapades on a paradisiacal island peopled only by women, his journey to the land of the dead (Tuonela) and how he himself dies there only to be brought back to life by his mother’s magic spells; and finally his return home after a long series of wars and battles. The Kalevala furnished Sibelius with the subjects of many other compositions, but for The Wood-Nymph, it was a poem by the Swedish poet Viktor Rydberg that provided the inspiration – the story of a carefree young man who, lost in a forest, encounters a nymph and is seduced by her, only to realize that the incident has cost him any chance of worldly happiness. Although Sibelius’ tone poem was warmly received at its première in 1895, it was not published in the composer’s lifetime, and soon disappeared from the concert repertoire. The first complete performance of the work in almost 100 years took place only in 1996, with the performers on this disc, a team which has become almost synonymous with top-flight idiomatic Sibelius performances.

Dmitri Shostakovich - Symphony No. 7 'Leningrad' - Mariinsky Orchestra, Valery Gergiev (2012) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Valery Gergiev continues his Shostakovich symphony cycle with an emotionally-charged performance of the Seventh Symphony. Shostakovich dedicated his Symphony No 7 to the defiance shown by the citizens of Leningrad in the face of Nazi totalitarianism. Despite the widespread reassessment that has since taken place regarding the inspirations for his symphonies, the ‘Leningrad’ symphony remains a highly-potent symbol for the residents of modern-day St Petersburg.
Previous releases in Gergiev’s Shostakovich cycle have included Symphonies Nos 1 & 15, 2 & 11 and 3 & 10. Between them they have received two Grammy Award nominations, as well as Chocs from Classica (France) and Editor’s Choices from Gramophone.
Gergiev will conduct Shostakovich symphonies with the Rotterdam Philharmonic in December, and complete the Brahms & Szymanowsky cycles with the LSO in London. In January the Mariinsky orchestra will perform a number of Shostakovich symphonies with Gergiev in France and in February they return to Russia for performances of Shchedrin’s 'Dead Souls' and Strauss’ 'Elektra'.

The New York Times has described the Ebènes as “a string quartet that can easily morph into a jazz band”, and it’s true that the innovative young ensemble is as riveting in Ravel (2009 Gramophone Recording of the Year) as in sophisticated arrangements of pop and film music.
They continue to surprise with a new album inspired by the irresistible rhythms of Brazil. But the Ebène Quartet don’t stop at Jobim, the father of bossa nova; they found echoes of bossa and samba where you would least expect them — resulting in their own arrangements of the Michael Jackson hit I Can’t Help It and Sting’s Fragile, among others. “We are always fascinated by the links between apparently unconnected pieces of music as we explore different aesthetic worlds,” cellist Raphaël Merlin explains.
To that end, the intrepid French foursome invited American jazz chanteuse Stacey Kent to lend her light yet soulful vocals to the album — “a dazzling woman with a radiant voice and a great lover of Brazilian music, who welcomed us into her world,” enthuses violist Mathieu Herzog. She is joined by the iconic French singer Bernard Lavilliers, himself an adventurer “whose name is synonymous with the rhythms and scents of Latin culture”.
Even with songs in English, French and Portuguese — and a Brazilian choir and percussionists joining the fray — the Ebènes’ impassioned, nuanced playing comes to the fore in moments for the quartet alone: a detour to Argentina with Piazzolla’s Libertango and a joyous rendition of the theme from Terry Gilliam’s celebrated film Brazil.
“When someone mentions quartets and chamber music, this isn’t normally what comes to mind,” says Lavilliers. “These four are anything but fixed in their ways, and they’re completely mad about Latin music — and other kinds of music as well.”

Crimes of Passion is the second studio album by American rock singer Pat Benatar, released on August 5, 1980 by Chrysalis Records. The album is the first to feature Myron Grombacher on drums, beginning a long tenure in Benatar's band that would last into the late-1990s.
The album debuted on the US Billboard 200 album chart the week ending August 23 and held at No. 2 for five weeks in the US in January 1981 , behind John Lennon's Double Fantasy. It contains the hits "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" (US No. 9), "You Better Run" (US No. 42), "Treat Me Right" (US No. 18), plus a cover of Kate Bush's international hit, "Wuthering Heights". Crimes of Passion is Benatar's biggest selling career album, having been certified 4x Platinum (for sales of over four million copies) in the United States alone.
The song "Hell Is for Children", which was not released as an A-side single, was also a hit on album-rock stations. A live version of this song from her album Live from Earth (1983) was released as the B-side of her "Love Is a Battlefield" single three years later. The song was featured in the 1981 animated film American Pop, as well as on the soundtrack.
In 1981, Benatar won her first Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance thanks to Crimes of Passion. The music video for the song "You Better Run" was the second music video ever aired on MTV in 1981.
