Rimsky-Korsakov described Taneyev’s best music as possessing ‘a wealth of beauty and expressiveness’, a verdict with which no one is likely to disagree after hearing the piano trio recorded here. Rimsky was (unjustly) disparaging towards his own, unfinished, trio, which emerges as a brooding, substantial work well worthy of revival.

American pianist Steve Kuhn’s playing credentials are as impressive as they are lengthy. Starting out in 1959 with trumpeter Kenny Durham, he went on to work with John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Art Farmer, and Gary Burton over the next few years. Kuhn recorded this 1968 album during his four-year sojourn in Stockholm. He teams up here with the best Scandinavian rhythm section of that era, bassist Palle Danielsson and drummer Jon Christensen, who were to become members of the legendary Keith Jarrett ‘European Quartet’. The title piece, a tasty Michel Legrand composition, flows from the Latin pulse of its theme on into Kuhn’s surging, hard-swinging solo. The Kuhn original Silver evokes the pianist’s contemplative side, and J. J. Johnson’s ballad Lament stays in this introspective vein before segueing into the relaxed Latin feel of Once We Loved. There’s a driving impressionistic impulse to Tom Jones that modulates into a lilting Burt Bacharach medley, Windows of the World & Here I Am, whereas Kuhn plays I Fall in Love too Easily with the required sense of pathos. Carla Bley’s Ad Infinitum is the album’s tour de force, encompassing the avante-garde, loping, Latinesque moments, and intense, propulsive modern jazz. Exquisitely recorded, this album is trio play at its refined best; it’s simply a beautiful album.

Ottensamer presents a dazzling selection of the clarinet’s early repertoire from 18th Century Mannheim, with works by J. and C.P. Stamitz, Mozart and Danzi, together with the Kammerakademie Potsdam.
Featuring duets with Albrecht Mayer and Emmanuel Pahud - two of the great wind soloists of our time and Ottensamer’s friends and colleagues at the Berliner Philharmoniker. It promises to be the chamber recording of the year.
The "Mannheim school" was a melting pot of “revolutionary experimentation” - musicians from all over Europe coming together to develop a new explosive and colourful sound – forming the orchestra as we know it today.
The Mannheim Orchestra was also the first to adopt the recently developed clarinet into the orchestra, and here Mozart heard the instrument for the first time.
“It’s fascinating to think that Mannheim inspired so many composers and musicians, and it was the players themselves who made it happen – it gave them the chance to do their own thing. Every aspect of composition, playing, teaching and conducting was concentrated there, and audiences went wild, blown away by the kind of rock-star ensemble that they heard.” Andreas Ottensamer
Ottensamer’s debut album on Decca Classics – the first clarinettist to sign exclusively to the label in its 89 year history.

Sonny Rollins with the Modern Jazz Quartet (PRLP 7029) (also released as Sonny & the Stars) is a 1956 album by jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins, featuring his earliest recordings for the Prestige label under his leadership, including four tracks performed by Rollins with the Modern Jazz Quartet (John Lewis, Milt Jackson, Percy Heath and Kenny Clarke), eight tracks where Kenny Drew and Art Blakey replace Lewis, Jackson, and Clarke, and one track with Miles Davis on piano. Tracks 5-11 and 13 were originally featured on the Prestige 10 inch LP Sonny Rollins Quartet (1952, PRLP 137), which is reissued in its entirety here. Track 12 was previously released on the various artists 10"LP Mambo Jazz (PRLP 135).
"I Know", featuring Miles Davis on piano, was recorded at the same session as four other tracks under Davis' name, using the same musicians, including the young Rollins. This was Davis' first recording session for Prestige Records, and his first working with Rollins. The producer Bob Weinstock tried to dissuade Davis from using Rollins at all, feeling he was not ready, but instead Davis persuaded the producer to let Rollins record a cut under his own name. The Davis tracks recorded that date were originally issued on the various artists 10"LP Modern Jazz Trumpets (PRLP 113), and are now more commonly available on the album Miles Davis and Horns (PRLP 7025).

Sonny Rollins - Way Out West (1957/2017) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

Artist: Sonny Rollins
Title: Way Out West
Genre: Jazz, Bop, Hard Bop, Saxophone Jazz
Label: © Contemporary Records/Concord Music Group, Inc.

Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 192kHz/24bit

Recorded: March 7, 1957, Contemporary Studio, Los Angeles

Way Out West is a 1957 album by Sonny Rollins with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne, neither of whom had played or recorded with Rollins before. The music employs a technique called "strolling", used here by Rollins for the first time, in which he would solo over only bass and drums with no pianist playing chords. The recent reissue of the CD has additional takes of three of the songs, including the title track. These additional takes are all about twice as long, containing much longer solos from all three of the members of the band.
In order to fit the recording session into the musicians' busy schedules, it was scheduled "for 3 A.M.", according to the liner notes by producer Lester Koenig: "At 7 A.M., after four hours of intense concentration, during which they recorded half the album, and should have been exhausted, Sonny said, 'I'm hot now.' Shelly who had been up for 24 hours, said, 'Man, I feel like playing.' And Ray, who was equally tired and had a studio call for the afternoon, just smiled."
The picture for the cover, taken by celebrated jazz photographer William Claxton, with the saxophonist dressed in Stetson hat, holster, and horn in place of a pistol, was Rollins' own idea, to celebrate his first trip out West, according to Koenig in the liner notes.

Shawn Mendes - Illuminate (2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/44,1kHz

Artist: Shawn Mendes
Title: Illuminate
Genre: Pop
Label: © Island Records
Release Date: 2016
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 44,1kHz/24bit

Duration: 00:52:12

Shawn Mendes translated his Vine superstardom into genuine pop stardom in 2015 thanks to "Stitches," a lively piece of pop with a slightly soulful undercurrent. Wisely, Mendes and his team decide to play off these soulful inclinations on Illuminate, the album released almost 18 months after his 2015 debut Handwritten. This isn't to say that Mendes is a crooner, nor is he riding anything resembling a funky groove. Instead, Illuminate uses light R&B rhythms as a way to give a bit of grace and warmth, the airiness of "Ruin" and "Three Empty Words" spinning heartbreak into seduction. As it turns out, this wide-eyed puppy dog routine is the key to Mendes' appeal. He's not forceful, and whenever he slides into a loverman routine, there's never a sense that he's a player: his voice is so small and sweet, it feels as if he's whispering sweet nothings to his high school sweetheart. On Handwritten, such quivering sensitivity seemed tentative, but on Illuminate, it has gelled into his pop persona; he's charming because he embraces his ordinariness. Sometimes on Illuminate the songs are a bit too diffuse to benefit from these qualities -- whenever they lack a hook or pronounced melody, the tracks tend to drift -- but a lot of the record provides a good showcase for his tenderness. And these aren't necessarily ballads, either. Certainly, he feels at home on a nice slow-burning torch number like "Don't Be a Fool" -- an old-fashioned slice of swaying '60s soul -- but on the insistent pop of "Treat You Better" and sunny seaside vibes of "Honest," this boyishness is equally appealing, and those sly shifts in tone are why Mendes comes into his own on Illuminate. --AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
