Recorded: September 24th and 25th 2009 at the Evangelisch Lutherse kerk in Haarlem by Bert van der Wolf

Pure sound painted by this unity, from the heart – in the strumming of strings, in the striking of sticks, in the sliding of screams…
The Jungle Boldie consists of three of Hollands most renowned jazz musicians. Overwater, Ornstein and Kegel met at the Royal Conservatory in the Hague during their studies and have been playing together ever since. They have the shared vision of what it is to play and perform ‘free’ music in the true sense of the word - creating a joyful interplay without any assumptions. The group have performed with many international artists including Pat Metheny, Ilse de Lange, Ack van Rooyen, Calefax, and David Murray – to name but a few.
Jungle Boldie started out as the Maarten Ornstein Trio and was founded in 1989, in 2000 the renamed themselves the Tony Overwater Trio and created an international stir when they relased their first album OP - a tribute to bassist Oscar Pettiford. The album featured flugelhorn player Ack van Rooyen and cellist Ernst Reyseger and won the 2001 Edison Award for Best Dutch Recording (Dutch Grammy). Their second project proved to be just as successful.
In 2005 the trio joined forced with the highly acclaimed Dutch classical reed quintet Calefax to play two suites by Duke Ellington: the famous Far East Suite and the lesser-known River Suite. The project was remarkable not only because of the crossover between classical and jazz and the choice of repertoire, but also for the fine arrangements made for this particular line up which, unusually, does not feature piano. The album Ellington Suites and the presentation concerts received massive media coverage.

Performed on December 18th of 2012 in Chicago, this performance was recorded directly to an 8 track Studer recorder. This great ensemble of world class players features Chicago-style modern jazz at its best (Jason Roebke, bass; Mike Reed, drums; Jason Adasiewicz, vibes; and Keefe Jackson, tenor sax.) Although the jazz is avant, it is also quite lyrical and captivating to listen to on tape. One customer said he had never heard better sounding vibes than on this tape. A handmade stereo mic was used on the vibes; and a hand assembled Telefunken 251e was used on the tenor sax.

Karl Amadeus Hartmann (1905-1963) is one of the most significant but least-known symphonic composers of the 20th century. This set of three hybrid SACDs, issued to mark the 50th anniversary of the German composer’s death, features his eight symphonies played by the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic and Chamber Philharmonic Orchestras under the batons of several major conductors, including Christoph Poppen, Osmo Vanska, James Gaffigan and Markus Stenz.
One of the most characteristic features of Hartmann’s work is the way in which he forges contrasting stylistic elements and techniques from various periods of music history into a seamless unit. Moreover, one melody is found in all his symphonies, concealed to varying degrees. This melody is based on the Jewish song “Elijahu hanavi” about the prophet Elijah, whom the Jews anxiously await to bring them redemption. This yearning quality lies at the heart of the composer’s music.
Two types of movement, adagio and scherzo, form the unmistakable axis of Hartmann’s symphonic works, and the result is that the musical discourse continually takes place between expansion and energy, monumental stasis and a dynamic primal force toppling everything in its path. Hartmann’s symphonic legacy most certainly deserves its rightful place in the canon, especially in English-speaking countries where it’s been often overlooked.

Recorded by Will Ackerman for Imaginary Road Studios on a Steinway B; Mastered by Bob Ludwig, Gateway Mastering

It’s a long way from Australia to Vermont – about 10,000 miles to be more precise, but the journey was worth it for pianist/composer Fiona Joy Hawkins to have her album recorded and produced by the legendary Windham Hill Records founder Will Ackerman. As it turned out, the experience was equally rewarding for him as well. In Will’s own words: “ ‘Blue Dream’ began as the most ambitious project of my entire career and resulted in one of the most remarkable collaborations this genre has ever known. ‘Blue Dream’ is unique and I’m as proud of it (and Fiona) as anything I’ve ever worked on in my 35 year career of Grammy Awards and gold and platinum records.” That is lofty praise indeed coming from someone who has worked with some of the most talented instrumentalists in contemporary music. There were no shortage of them on this album either which included T-Bone Wolk from Hall and Oates, post-Dylan singer-songwriter Luka Bloom, cellist Eugene Friesen of the Paul Winter Consort, Jeff Haynes from the Pat Metheny Group, and many others too numerous to mention.

Antonin Dvorak - Symphonies Nos. 8 & 9 'From the New World' - Budapest Festival Orchestra, Ivan Fischer (2010) High-Fidelity DSF Stereo DSD64/2.82MHz

Сomposer: Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904)
Artist: Budapest Festival Orchestra, Iván Fischer

Duration: 01:18:18
Recorded: 29 February - 3 March 2000, Italian Institute, Budapest

This pair of symphonies was written solely to satisfy Dvořák’s own poetic muse. In the keys of G major and its relative minor, E minor, they can be regarded as representing two sides of the same coin. The Eighth, composed in Dvořák’s summer residence at Vysoká deep in the Bohemian countryside, is indisputably “From the Old World” and rooted in Central Europe — “a work singing of the joy of green pastures, of summer evenings, of the melancholy of blue forests, of the defiant merry-making of the Czech peasants”, to quote the conductor Václav Talich, while the Ninth, composed in the claustrophobic surroundings of New York and intended as a greeting “From the New World”, is steeped in the composer’s “unappeasable yearning for his native soil”

Dvorak's career was a worldwide success. He wrote his cello concerto in New York, it was rehearsed in Prague and premiered in London. Always full of tender feelings for his home country he lived an international life. He avoided speaking German though when possible and would never accept a job in Vienna. His cello concerto would become hugely popular all over the world and has occupied a significant place in the gallery of 19th century masterpieces. It took him four months to write but that reflects a freshness, a rise and shine attitude rather than the neurotic speed of city life. No teutonic bombast (Berlin), no Mahlerian pathos (Vienna), but healthy abundance of energy. Dreams but no Freud, profundity but no Angst. The orchestra is large and powerful, but this most symphonic of cello concertos doesnt become a David and Goliath freak show. The tuttis can be seen as the background for a journey. The landscapes, by night or day, under moon or sunlight are sometimes awesome but never hostile and occasionally the hero revels in a heart-warming village party. There is also room for reflection and intimacy; the solo cello is beautifully supported both in song and prayer. (...) --Pieter Wispelwey
