In his time, Bruckner was understood and admired only within a small circle, a handful of advocates of his music, both pupils andWagnerites. As Bruckner worked on the Adagio, the emotional heart of the Seventh Symphony, he heard news of the death of his idol RichardWagner, and instantly decided to dedicate it to his remembrance.
This Symphony brought the composer's breakthrough in 1885, and until today it has remained the most frequently performed of Bruckner's nine symphonies. “Bruckner is the saint, the tzadik, the bodhisattva, the guru among composers. He is the purest and most capable of religious ecstasy. Everything is seen with the clearest vision, built to majestic proportions and felt with deepest emotions. The first melody commences as if it were the purest ever written. But soon the notes of a simple E major triad of divine simplicity give way to a chromatic search surrounding the dominant note "B" with a deeply felt human desire. The melody seems to find its calm cadence, but it leaps up again, three times, aiming to attain yet higher ecstasy. And this is only the start..” Iván Fischer

Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, one of his greatest works, was written in the United States after the composer was forced to flee Hungary during World War II. It is not only a brilliant display vehicle for each instrumental section but a work of considerable structural ingenuity that unites classical forms and sonorities with the pungency of folk rhythms and harmonies. Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta explores darker moods through a score of marvellously poised symmetry.
This release follows Marin Alsop’s ‘riveting’ (Gramophone) Baltimore Symphony recordings of Dvořák’s symphonies.
This has long been a popular coupling of works by Béla Bartók, but this new release rides on the crest of a wave of previous successes and will occupy a leading position amongst the competition on the quality of its recording and performance. Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra have a synergy which has made their Dvořák symphonic recordings sound ‘as fresh as when Dvořák put pen to paper’ (BBC Music Magazine on the Symphonies 7 and 8, NBD0010). Of Dvořák’s New World Symphony (8570714) BBC Music Magazine also wrote, ‘it is rare to be able to say that a performance forces one to listen to a work anew, but this is exactly what Alsop’s reading achieves.’

Richard Egarr and the Academy of Ancient Music have endeavoured to return to the original ‘chamber’ conception of the works, with one player per part.

Johann Sebastian Bach - St. John Passion, BWV 245 - Netherlands Bach Society, Jos Van Veldhoven (2005) High-Fidelity DSF Stereo DSD64/2.82MHz

Сomposer: Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750)

Recorded: March 2004 Waalse Kerk, Amsterdam, the Netherlands

As with the work itself, there’s no recording of Bach’s St. John Passion that stands as preeminent and certainly none that can claim to be definitive. But, if you accept Jos van Veldhoven’s decisions regarding certain key aspects of this performance–including the reconstruction of some parts–this one comes very close. Aside from the various versions of the score that Bach himself created, performances are widely varied in terms of instrumentation (numbers and types of instruments and how they are used) and vocal forces (most significantly, how many singers to a part). Here, Veldhoven has chosen to attempt to reconstruct and perform the St. John in a version as close as possible to what was heard at the work’s premiere in 1724. You can read the rationale for and details of this effort in the excellent liner notes, but suffice it to say that some guesses and reconstructive decisions had to be made in several cases, both in vocal and orchestral parts. Most shocking to listeners familiar with this work is the total absence of flutes, which opens up the orchestral sound to a new and very different world of color.

Recorded: Helsinki, Finlandia Hall, 15.1.2011 (Incantations), Music Centre, 10.–12.8.2011. A 24-bit recording in dXd (digital eXtreme definition)

This new recording couples Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara’s latest concerto works with an orchestral piece from his early Modernist period (Modificata; 1957/2003). The virtuoso Percussion Concerto Incantations (2008) features the Scottish percussion soloist Colin Currie, who is the dedicatee and première performer of this work. Currie wrote himself the virtuoso cadenza to the final movement. Rautavaara’s Second Cello Concerto Towards the Horizon (2009) was written for cellist Truls Mørk and plays continuously in one 20-minute movement. Reviewing the premiere the Star Tribune noted that the composer “acknowledges a ‘taste for eternity’ and a vain of mysticsm runs through his work.” Einojuhani Rautavaara is recognized as one of the most notable Finnish composers after Jean Sibelius. His recordings on Ondine have been bestsellers and garnered numerous awards (including a recent GRAMMY nomination for his opera Kaivos). Under their chief conductor John Storgårds, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra builds on long-time pedigrees of performing their compatriot’s music.
