Esoteric Recordings are proud to announce the release of a new deluxe 3CD which tells the story of the so-called underground era of one of Britains great independent record labels of the 1960s & 1970s, Transatlantic Records. In the heady atmosphere of the late 1960s, the sea change in British popular music spearheaded by the Beatles experimentation on the Sergeant Pepper album and swiftly followed by the likes of Cream, Pink Floyd, Traffic, Family, Procol Harum, Jethro Tull and a host of groups and musicians who followed in their footsteps led to the album being seen as the medium in which serious musicians would explore and develop their craft. The apparently disparate genres of blues, jazz, rock, folk and even world music were fused together by many diverse acts all of whom were eager to be regarded as progressive in their musical approach. The so-called underground audience eagerly consumed this music, which sat alongside the social changes that were also taking place. Featuring over three and a half hours of newly re-mastered music over three CDs, “Let the Electric Children Play” documents the fascinating story of a unique period in the history of one of Britains most eccentric labels. This deluxe anthology also includes a lavishly illustrated booklet with new essay and artist biographies housed in a clamshell boxed set.

Heavily bootlegged, the tapes featured on Universal’s 2018 release Live at the Fillmore East 1968 were originally recorded by the Who’s manager Kit Lambert with the intention of releasing a live album between The Who Sell Out and Tommy. Both nights of the band’s tour-closing stint at the Fillmore on April 5 and 6, 1968 were recorded but the equipment malfunctioned on the first night, so Lambert abandoned the plan, leaving the tapes to bootleggers to mine over the years. The long-delayed 2018 release from Universal restores the tapes from the second night so the music leaps from the speakers — which is needed, as the Who were on absolute fire this evening, as they tore through first airings of Sell Out songs, a dynamite “A Quick One (While He’s Away),” a half-hour “My Generation,” the anti-smoking obscurity “Little Billy,” and no less than three Eddie Cochran covers. Caught somewhere between mod and prog, the Who sound as if they’re at the peak of their powers. Unlike many classic official Who live records, there’s no lengthy Tommy digression and, in a way, that’s preferable, as the group hunkers down into its pop-art, making sure that it explodes in every imaginable color. That sustained ferocity is why Live at the Fillmore East 1968 could conceivably be called the definitive Who live album: it may not have the classic status of Live at Leeds, but the group never sounded as explosive as it does here.

A tremendous debut album, and indeed one of the best first-time outings in rock history, introducing the band’s fusion of rock, blues, classical, jazz, and poetry with a knockout punch. The lean, spidery guitar and organ riffs interweave with a hypnotic menace, providing a seductive backdrop for Jim Morrison’s captivating vocals and probing prose. “Light My Fire” was the cut that topped the charts and established the group as stars, but most of the rest of the album is just as impressive, including some of their best songs: the propulsive “Break on Through” (their first single), the beguiling mystery of “The Crystal Ship,” the mysterious “End of the Night,” “Take It as It Comes” (one of several tunes besides “Light My Fire” that also had hit potential), and the stomping rock of “Soul Kitchen” and “Twentieth Century Fox.” The 11-minute Oedipal drama “The End” was the group at its most daring and, some would contend, overambitious. It was nonetheless a haunting cap to an album whose nonstop melodicism and dynamic tension would never be equaled by the group again, let alone bettered.

4:13 Dream may open with the doomed romanticism of “Underneath the Stars,” but that slow-crawling mini-epic is a feint, momentarily disguising how this is the Cure’s poppiest album since 1992’s Wish. Poppy doesn’t necessarily mean that 4:13 Dream spills over with fully formed pop songs along the lines of “High” and “Friday I’m in Love,” as the 13 songs here lack the tight construction of those two minor classics, along with their beguiling light touch. Despite the preponderance of sprightly tempos and singsong hooks, nothing about 4:13 Dream feels especially light, perhaps because Robert Smith chooses to pair these purported pop songs with a heavy dose of affected angst. On the “The Reasons Why,” the catchiest tune here, Smith sings about suicide with no trace of irony, or even that much interest, either; it’s hard to escape the notion that he sings about darkness because that is what is expected from the king of goth. The pristine production emphasizes Smith’s stylized mannerisms — nowhere more so than on “The Only One,” where his caterwauls feel too clearly articulated — which in turn highlights that for all the purported pop of 4:13 Dream, only “The Perfect Boy” and “This. Here and Now. With You” have hooks that dig underneath the skin. These two songs are buried in the back of 4:13 Dream, surrounded by too many half-baked tunes and formless, colorless sound surges on either side, music that perfectly fits the definition of the pop side of the Cure without ever truly embodying the spirit.

Cavern Of Anti-Matter return for their third studio album on their own Duophonic label. Hormone Lemonade sees the band heavily utilizing the sounds of modular synths and home built drum machines, yet still keeping the loose, improvised sound familiar to fans of their first two albums, with minimal guitar melodies and live drum kit helping to build hypnotic layers of texture. The albums genesis was in the self-constructed rhythm machines of band member Holger Zapf, the Taktron Z3 and Taktron Z2, being recorded to tape during three one-hour sessions. These sessions also included the use of 70s Hohner and Eko drum machines. Holger played his parts in a free-form way and the bpm varied wildly as it was not possible to sync it to any outside controllers. Tim Gane edited these initial jams into useable chunks and proceeded to overdub each new rhythmic “chunk” with some basic musical ideas, keeping in tune to the hum of the machines and retaining the “feel” of the inherent pulse. Joe Dilworth arrived to lay down a beat over these minimal backing tracks, going with the flow as best he could. In the following months the music was fleshed out using various synths and sequencers from Roland, Arp, Oberheim and Holger’s modular synth set up. As well as many of the bass and sequencer parts the modular also supplied the chords by tuning each one of it’s five oscillators to specific notes and intervals.
