Through the combination of sacred and profane that she embodies, the profoundly human personality of Mary Magdalene greatly inspired artists of the Baroque era, whether painters, poets or composers. It was in the sphere of influence of Italian oratorios, highly prized at the court of Vienna, that Antonio Bertali devoted a most moving sepolcro to her in 1663, a genre traditionally played during Holy Week. In 1617, in Mantua, it was in the form of theatrical interludes that she was honoured by court composers such as Salomone Rossi, Muzio Effrem and Claudio Monteverdi, who wrote the prologue for this other Maddalena.

Alexandre Tharaud – Autograph (2013) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Artist: Alexandre Tharaud
Title: Autograph
Genre: Classical
Release Date: 2013
Duration: 01:09:07
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz
Label: Warner Classics

Despite all the somewhat hip graphics, this release from the new partnership of the venerable French label Erato and the revived Warner Classics imprint is at root a very old-fashioned type of album: a program of encores. Even some of the music might have been heard 50 or 75 years ago in a concert by one of the leading touring virtuosos of the day: the Sibelius Valse triste, Op. 44/1, and the Leopold Godowsky arrangement of Saint-Sans Le Cygne, for example, are such chestnuts that they're actually a bit less often heard nowadays. But French pianist Alexandre Tharaud updates the old paradigm in several ways. First and most significantly, he adds some new material to the encores mix and integrates it effectively into the overall framework. Such works as Ignacio Cervantes' rattling Adis a Cuba and Federico Mompou's El Lago not only are fresh in this setting but broaden out the mood and expressive range of the whole as the program proceeds. He also adds several Baroque keyboard pieces to the picture with entrancing effect. Finally, Tharaud has a moody and slightly capricious approach to the Romantic mainstream pieces on the bill that works well in this context. With superb sound from the entirely acoustically appropriate Salle Colonne in Paris, this is a strong release that serves the needs of the listener looking for a light album of incidental piano music.

Aleksander Debicz, Marcin Zdunik – Bach Stories (2017) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Artist: Aleksander Debicz, Marcin Zdunik
Title: Bach Stories
Genre: Classical
Release Date: 2017
Duration: 01:58:23
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz
Label: WM Poland - WMI

Bach Stories explores a new way of thinking about classical music and improvisation; it presents historical music practice in a contemporary form. This double album from Warner Classics bears the fruits of a friendship and collaboration between two young but already much-awarded musicians. Aleksander Dbicz (piano) and Marcin Zdunik (cello) combine virtuosity and musical drama with the sheer joy and freshness of music-making in a unique programme of chamber works by Bach and improvisations inspired by those works. These improvisations -- in a classical style rather than jazz -- create a bridge between two periods, bringing Bach's music closer to the modern ear by using new means of expression. The 'Stories' evoked in the title could be a simple idea, a fleeting memory or a labyrinthine drama. "Bach's music stirred and inspired our imagination, evoking both simple associations and complex narrative schemes", explain the musicians.

The afterlife for Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer's storied MPS Records has been tough to track. After Brunner-Schwer sold the rights to Philips in the early '80s, the label changed hands several times---Polydor picked it up and passed it through a subsidiary, Universal Music Group acquired its holdings, Speakers Corner Records took over on the vinyl side of the equation, and then Edel AG finally acquired it in 2014. Now, in an effort to make the most out of this German imprint's back catalog, MPS' current owners are digging into the vaults to bring us some special projects that deserve to be dusted off. Don Ellis' Soaring (MPS Records, 1973), built with his signature fusion aesthetic and containing Hank Levy's now-(in)famous "Whiplash," is one of them; the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band's All Smiles (MPS Records, 1968), presenting a swinging intercontinental ensemble with the likes of Benny Bailey, Johnny Griffin, and Jimmy Woode in the mix, is another; and this compelling gem from trombone maverick Albert Mangelsdorff is the third item to round out the early summer reissues list for 2017.
