Neil Diamond's fifth album, Touching You, Touching Me, was released in 1969 and became the most successful LP of his nascent career, cracking the US top 30 and yielding the platinum single Holly Holy. In addition to Diamond's original songs, the album includes covers by Joni Mitchell, Buffy Ste-Marie, Jerry Jeff Walker and Fred Neil.

"... Diamond was still proving to the world that he was no longer a Brill Building backroom boy: he was a full-blooded, theatrical performer with a stentorian voice you didn’t forget in a hurry ... Tom Catalano’s production and Lee Holdridge’s string arrangements allow the masculine Sturm und Drang of Diamond’s rough-tender vocals to eke every drop of sentiment from the ballads ... his own songs are as robust as ever ... Holly Holy is the album’s true centrepiece ... the heroic build of the simple effective structure and Neil’s titanic voice, which testified, as in all the best love songs, to both joy and yearning. You’d need a gnarly heart not to be touched by Diamond’s drive here." --BBC Music

Diamond's first regular album release to sell in substantial numbers, Touching You, Touching Me contains the gold Top Ten single "Holly Holy," and a Diamond composition, but is mostly notable for its covers of standards by other songwriters: "Everybody's Talkin'," "Mr. Bojangles," "Both Sides Now," and the chart entry "Until It's Time for You to Go." These helped signal that Diamond was thinking of himself less as a Brill Building hack than as a peer of Fred Neil, Jerry Jeff Walker, Joni Mitchell, and Buffy Sainte-Marie. --AllMusic Review by William Ruhlmann
