Recorded: 27th and 28th July 2013 in the Mariinsky II Opera Hall, St Petersburg

Specially written for Gergiev on the occasion of his 60th birthday, Rodion Shchedrin’s The Left-Hander is a comedy of Russians and Englishmen, new technology, old traditions, and strong drink. The premiere was given by the Mariinsky Opera in St Petersburg in July 2013.
Rodion Shchedrin is one of music’s greatest living humourists, and his work is laced with pitch-black irony and deadpan wit. Based on Nikolai Leskov’s classical satirical novella of 1881, The Tale of Cross-Eyed Lefty From Tula and the Steel Flea, The Left-Hander is a gloriously wry exploration of Russia’s relationship with the West in general and England in particular.

Sallie Ford - Soul Sick (2017) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Duration: 38:59

Soul Sick is the second solo album from Sallie Ford, who split with her band the Sound Outside in 2014, but in some ways this 2017 album feels more like a debut than its predecessor. Chalk that up to how Ford delves right into personal territory on Soul Sick, a move that is slightly telegraphed by the album's title. Throughout the album, she sings about loss and anxiety, issues that are common to many, but her songs offer a specific, personalized spin on these troubles. Similarly, Ford's music is idiosyncratic and surprising, fusing together elements of the past and present. Like Slap Back before it, Soul Sick demonstrates a stronger debt to indie rock than anything the Sound Outside did, but she's threading in some of the retro sounds that are at the foundation of her music. There are hints of Farfisa-fueled girl groups, rousing soul ballads, galloping rockabilly, even swirling wah-wah psychedelia, all sounds that sit nicely next to the big-footed stomp of "Never Gonna Please" or the jangle of "Record on Repeat." Producer Mike Coykendall helps tie these sounds together into a seamless tapestry, but Soul Sick really holds together due to Ford's strength of personality. She pleads, yelps, and croons, alternating between agitation and desperation, and that raw emotion is the true hook on Soul Sick. --AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Ryan Adams - Prisoner (2017) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Artist: Ryan Adams
Title: Prisoner
Genre: Rock, Pop Rock, Alternative/Indie Rock, Alt-Country, Americana
Label: © PaxAmericana Recording Co. under exclusive license to Blue Note Records
Release Date: 2017

Recorded: 2016

Produced by Don Was, the highly anticipated Prisoner is the first release from Ryan Adams since his 2015 Taylor Swift cover album 1989. With influences from AC/DC and Electric Light Orchestra to Bruce Hornsby and Bachman-Turner Overdrive, the tracks may be more uptempo than in the past, but lyrically Adams is just as personal and soul-searching as before.
"When I run, I listen to (an iPod) Nano ... I put all the AC/DC records on from back to front, or I’ll listen to the best of stuff from the ’80s: Springsteen, or (Bruce) Hornsby and I’ll listen to what is going on there. I was listening to AC/DC’s Fly on the Wall and that’s when I realized what I had to do for the record ... it's about the big questions of somebody my age who's been through the things I've been through. But I didn't feel I needed to make something that was dark and heavy." --Ryan Adams

Recorded live at Opéra Berlioz, Le Corum, Montpellier, 2 & 5 December 2015

“Rossini has been a revelation for me,” says Canadian contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux. The first fruit of her exclusive Erato contract is this live recording from Montpellier of arias and duets from Tancredi, Semiramide, L’italiana in Algeri and other serious and comic operas by the composer. She is joined by soprano Patrizia Ciofi and conductor Enrique Mazzola, also her partners for a 2014 staging of Tancredi in Paris, which prompted La Croix to praise her as “a generous artist with a voice that is both ample and easily produced across its entire tessitura … from the depths to top notes that flash like a cavalier’s sabre.”
Marie-Nicole Lemieux triumphantly defies the frequent assertion that the contralto is a dying breed. Moreover, with this live recital of Rossini arias and duets, the Canadian singer proves that a deep, rich, voluminous female voice can move with the same dazzling agility as a light, bright soprano.
Since she first came to the world’s attention in 2000, when she won the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition for Opera in Brussels, Lemieux, who has been praised by Gramophone for her “velvet-like voice and generosity in phrasing and thought”, has established herself in a wide variety of operatic roles.

Richard Barbieri - Planets + Persona (2017) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/48kHz

Artist: Richard Barbieri
Title: Planets + Persona
Genre: Electronic, Experimental, Ambient, Dark Ambient, Leftfield, IDM
Label: © Kscope

Duration: 53:09
Recorded: Engineered by Andrea Secchi, Mats Johansson, Stefano Quarta; Mixed by Richard Barbieri; Mastered by Simon Heyworth

The Japan and Porcupine Tree keyboardist Richard Barbieri releases his most sonically expansive work to date, with a brand new album entitled Planets + Persona. It is the third Barbieri solo album, but the first to feature such a wide pallet of instrumentation. Vintage analogue synthesisers combine with acoustic performances and jazz elements. Twisted voices are always present, though not in a language we can recognise. Barbieri skilfully utilises the talents of a pan-European core of musicians to produce an album that marries synthesised sounds with organic instrumentation to conjure up vivid, colourful and allusive soundscapes. It’s a skilful commingling of texture and tone, mood and musicality.
Recorded in London, Italy and Sweden, this is Barbieri’s most ambitious solo work to date with a central theme of duality that runs through the album. The title alone – ‘Planets and Persona’ alludes to this, and the dialectic theme is a constant throughout the contrasting and shape-shifting sounds of the album. Take, for example, Night of the Hunter – inspired by Charles Laughton’s only directorial movie , the piece moves through subtle shifts of atmosphere and emphasis, through melodic, dream-like sequences through to harsher tones; it’s a piece that builds to a profound cumulative effect. Elsewhere, Solar Storm shifts gears artfully, with Percy Jones’ sometimes percussive bass work contrasting to the smoother synthesiser textures incisively. Barbieri’s purely solo Interstellar Medium shows that his ability to develop and realise a theme under his own auspices that underscores his innate creativity. It’s but one aspect of a thoroughly engrossing and immersive album.

These songs are based on slave narratives from the 1800s, African American experiences of the last century, and the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and headlines from streets of Ferguson and Baltimore today. Voices demanding to be heard, to impart the hard-earned wisdom of a tangled, difficult, complicated history; we just try to open the door and let them through." —Rhiannon Giddens

Rebecca Clarke - Works for Viola - Duo Runya (2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/88,2kHz

Rebecca Clarke (27 August 1886 – 13 October 1979) was an English classical composer and violist best known for her chamber music featuring the viola.
Clarke moved to the United States in 1916, after being disowned by her father. She had been supporting herself with some success as a soloist.
Rebecca Clarke's Sonata for Viola and Piano is first known of in 1919, when the composer was 33 years old. The piece had its première at the Berkshire Music Festival in 1919, and was well received. Furthermore was published in 1921 by Chester Music. Because of the many different obstacles the piece presents, as well as its highly idiomatic writing, it is becoming more and more a staple of the violist's repertoire.
Rebecca Clarke wrote little and a large portion of her works features the viola. Much of her music was written for herself and the all-female chamber ensembles she played in.
The impressionism of Debussy is often mentioned in connection with Clarke's work, particularly its lush textures and modernistic harmonies. The Viola Sonata (published in the same year as the Bloch and the Hindemith Viola Sonata) is an example of this, with its pentatonic opening theme, thick harmonies, emotionally intense nature, and dense, rhythmically complex texture. The Sonata remains a part of standard repertoire for the viola. Morpheus, composed a year earlier, was her first expansive work, after over a decade of songs and miniatures.
The "Passacaglia on an Old English Tune", also from 1941 and premiered by Clarke herself, is based on a theme attributed to Thomas Tallis which appears throughout the work. The piece is modal in flavor, mainly in the Dorian mode but venturing into the seldom-heard Phrygian mode.
The Runya Duo, formed by sisters Diana and Arianna Bonatesta, is perfect in giving sweetness and femininity to this music. Their remarkable harmony and fusion makes them look like a single musician! The perfect recording by Alessandro Simonetto is free from any mastering addition.
