One of the coolest, grooviest albums we've ever heard from arranger David Matthews – a set that draws inspiration from Frank Herbert's Dune, and sends Dave out into space with a whole bunch of sci fi-tinged funky numbers! Matthews has already had plenty of CTI arranging experience by the time of this set – but he really moves into some unusual space with the record – open, evocative tunes that really live up to their inspiration, but also have some of Dave's funky touches too. Matthews gets help from an all-star lineup of CTI players – including Grover Washington on reeds and Eric Gale on guitar – and titles include the massive funk track "Sandworms", plus "Song Of The Bene Gesserit", "Silent Running", "Arrakis", and "Space Oddity".

Craig Taborn - Daylight Ghosts (2017) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Keyboardist Craig Taborn’s Daylight Ghosts is the Minneapolis-bred New Yorker’s third ECM release as a leader, a quartet album following the solo Avenging Angel and trio disc Chants. Both projects earned wide acclaim, with The Guardian saying that Taborn’s “musicality and his attention to detail are hypnotic, as is his remarkable sense of compositional narrative within an improvised performance.” Along with the questing Taborn on piano and electronic keyboards, the quartet of Daylight Ghosts features two other luminaries from the New York scene – reed player Chris Speed and bassist Chris Lightcap – plus drummer Dave King, the leader’s fellow Minnesota native and one-third of alt-jazz trio The Bad Plus. Each player draws from a broad artistic background, as informed by rock, electronica and diverse strains of world music as they are the various permutations of jazz improvisation. Dynamism and spectral ambience, acoustic and electric sounds, groove and lingering melody – all come together to animate Daylight Ghosts.

Dizzy Gillespie called him “the greatest trumpet player on earth”; he was a major influence on the young Miles Davis (they’re both from St. Louis), and with over 900 recording sessions to his credit, Trumpeter-Flugelhornist Clark Terry is one of the most recorded jazz artists. Recording live at the Jazzhouse in Hamburg, Germany, Terry is spurred on by a world-class rhythm section that includes bassist Larry Gales of Thelonious Monk fame. Terry’s warm, personable tone, technical mastery and inventiveness sizzles throughout as he takes on an up-tempo Ellington “Perdido” and exhibits his famous “mumbles” scat singing style on “Jazzhouse Blues”. Wham! With quotes and asides galore, it’s a merry musical go ‘round.

Clare Fischer - Machaca (1980/2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/88,2kHz

“I wouldn’t be me without Clare Fischer. (He) was a major influence on my harmonic concept. I was in awe of him.” The praise for keyboardist, composer, arranger Fischer stems from no less than jazz great Herbie Hancock. Fischer’s (1928-2012) influence has spanned the gamut of modern music. Nominated for 11 Grammies, Fischer arranged for the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Al Jarreau, Paul McCartney, and Michael Jackson. In 1985 he began a many-year collaboration with pop artist Prince, writing some 40 orchestral arrangements, including music for Prince’s movies Under the Cherry Moon, Graffiti Bridge, and Batman. Fischer is also known for his playing and composing Latin music. “Pensativa” and “Morning” have become Latin jazz standards; in 1981 won a Grammy for best Latin record.
A must for fans of Clare Fischer’s Latin side, Machaca is the second of his “Salsa Picante” period. All but one of the pieces are written by Clare. He describes Machaca as “food that combines different ingredients”, and with a bevy of Latino musicians, an admixture of Latin rhythms and melodies and European-influenced harmonies, it’s one delicious musical concoction. African Flutes mixes a piano tumbao (repeated vamp) with tribal chanting and Stravinsky-influenced chords. Then there is Gaviota (seagull) with its quasi bolero romanticism and Cuban folk rhythm base. Machaca offers up Latin-rock fusion with drummer Aaron Ballesteros and company supplying the groove, and Gentle Breeze, plays over a merengue rhythm as Fischer and Co. storm through with tempestuous solos. Machaca: a potpourri of Clare Fischer pieces with a tasty salsa flavor to savor.

“I wouldn’t be me without Clare Fischer. (He) was a major influence on my harmonic concept. Fischer is also known for his playing and composing Latin music. “Pensativa” and “Morning” have become Latin jazz standards; in 1981 won a Grammy for best Latin record. On And Ex-42 Fischer pulls out all the stops as he takes on the Yamaha ex-42 electric organ, and he has some of the West Coast’s best-known sidemen with him. On Gershwin’s classic standard Soon, Fischer’s dense chords flesh out emotive images the song didn’t even know it had. Fischer sensitively reinterprets Monk’s classic Round Midnight, staying close to the melody while giving the voicings a new texture. On Lennie’s Pennies Fisher and saxophonist Gary Foster navigate legendary pianist Lennie Tristano’s tricky-hip bop lines in unison, as Fischer turns the language of bop on its head. Fischer’s Blues in F starts off as a cool, slow blues. Fischer and Foster heat it up, smoking in and out of the changes before returning to the original feel. Crystal Sunrise is a Latin-inflected piece that exhibits Fischer’s amazing feel for Latin.

Clare Fischer - Clare Declares (1977/2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/88,2kHz

Fischer is also known for his playing and composing Latin music. “Pensativa” and “Morning” have become Latin jazz standards; in 1981 won a Grammy for best Latin record.
On Clare Declares Fischer plays an Austrian-made Rieger pipe organ.Jazz Toccata in C Minor begins with a hip tip of the hat to J.S. Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor. Bach would have dug the hard-swinging amalgam of jazz and classic. Fischer takes the pop ballad If and gradually turns it inside out as he moves away from the tune’s melodic roots. Autumn Leaves has a “mysterioso” feel with clashing close-knit chords – it all swings and a double-time section burns. I’ll Take Romance is a ¾ romp on this standard – the most “in” of the bunch – with something of a circus air; just when you think this is straight-ahead swinging jazz waltz Fischer throws in some polyphonic outness. On Cherokee, Fischer takes to the warpath as he races through an up-tempo version of this evergreen. The musical miracles that Fischer performs should make a true believer out of every listener!

Spanish star Camilo Sesto started his music career while playing in a band called Los Botines, mostly influenced by the Beatles. After meeting producer Juan Pardo the artist decided to go on his own, releasing his first record, getting the hit songs "Fresa Salvaje," and "Algo De Mi," soon after. By 1974 Sesto was known throughout Latin America. To take advantage of that popularity, the singer started touring South America and the U.S. being acclaimed everywhere. Camilo Sesto's climax came while playing a main role in the spanish version of Jesus Christ Superstar in 1975. Three years later his song "El Amor De Mi Vida," became one of his major hits.
