Four works - four composing styles - four creative periods of Ernst Krenek - four trouvailles of classical modernism. The first Solo Sonata - presented here as world premier recording - urges towards expressive breadth, the Triophantasie plays with the past and alludes to the music of Franz Schubert. The second Sonata for Violin and Piano, modern in idiom and classical in form, was written in exile. The second Solo Sonata, composed in 1948 in a phase of uncertainty, presents acondensed, more objective counterpart of the first. Christoph Schickedanz convinces with outstanding technical brilliance, multifaceted colouration and exuberant music-making.

He published both folksong collections and writings on Armenian church melodies, and his work laid the foundations for the development of a clearly defined national musical style. The Seven Folk Dances evoke the specific timbres of Armenian instruments, the Seven Songs for Piano are fleeting and lyrical while the Twelve Children’s Pieces based on folk-themes are beautifully crisp. Msho-Shoror is one of the most ancient of all Armenian dances.

Julia Hulsmann Trio - Sooner and Later (2017) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Recorded: September 2016, Rainbow Studio, Oslo

With Sooner and Later, her sixth ECM album, Julia Hülsmann returns to the trio format of her successful recordings End of a Summer (2008) and Imprint (2011). The Berlin pianist calls Sooner and Later “ a product of the last two or three years – though these had been filled with a lot of non-trio activities such as the concerts supporting the quartet recording In Full View (2013) and the quintet album A Clear Midnight – Kurt Weill and America featuring singer Theo Bleckmann (2015).
But, as the pianist is ready to point out, not only were her partners in the trio, bassist Marc Muellbauer and drummer Heinrich Köbberling, involved in most of these ventures, in between them the trio undertook extensive travels to distant destinations – among them the US, Canada, Peru, Central Asia and China – „there something special developed within the trio. When traveling you not only gain new perspectives, but also experience even long standing partners anew. It helped to open up new sonic territory for us“.
The Central-Asian weeks find their most explicit expression on the new album in the form of „Biz Joluktuk“ – a tune the band heard in performance from a 12 year old violinist in Kyrgyzstan and which was later re-harmonized by Julia. Once again all three members of the group have contributed compositions to a Hülsmann trio album. “Heinrich’s pieces all start, as you would expect from a drummer, on a rhythmic level”, explains Hülsmann, “but then he always surprises me with his very friendly melodies. He infuses very special harmonic colors into our sound.” Whereas Marc Muellbauer’s compositions, as Hülsmann puts it, “are mostly based on quite complex, very clever harmonics – but when you finally play them, they reveal a great clarity and self-evidence.”
Hülsmann’s own pieces have all been for quite a while part of the band’s stage repertoire, “where they could develop and mature in a very natural, organic way”, as the leader says. The title of her piece “Thatpujai” is an anagram of “Jutta Hipp”, and its theme is comprised of phrases from the late German jazz pianist’s solos.
The program is rounded out by „All I Need“, a song originally from UK rock group Radiohead. Like the Hülsmann-penned tracks „J.J.“, „Soon“ or „Mond“ with their sometimes almost clubby grooves, it emphasizes the subtle rhythmic aspects of their music, unheard of on the trio’s earlier recordings.

Joe Simon established himself as a poignant, folksy, yet urgent vocalist with his debut album on the Sound Stage label. He was then working with the great disc jockey John "R" Richbourg, who helped him find the right blend of soulful ardor and countrified narrative. While neither "Teenager's Prayer" nor "Nine Pound Steel" hit the charts, they laid the groundwork for Simon's monster hits that followed two years later. This album has long been deleted; look for it on collector's auction lists or in used record stores. --AllMusic Review by Ron Wynn

Easy listening composer and arranger Joe Harnell was born in the Bronx, New York, on August 2, 1924. The son of a former vaudevillian, he initiated piano studies at the age of six and was playing professionally by 14, performing with a series of jazz bands (including his father's Catskills klezmer combo) while continuing his studies. After receiving a music scholarship to the University of Miami, Harnell joined the U.S. Air Force in 1943, soon joining the Glenn Miller Air Force Band. While stationed in Paris, he studied composition with Nadia Boulanger, followed by a stint under William Walton at London's Trinity College of Music. Following his 1946 USAF discharge, Harnell returned to the U.S. and enrolled at Boston University's Tanglewood Institute, studying under Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein. Despite his classical training he pursued a career in jazz and pop, returning to New York in 1950 to serve as a freelance pianist with a series of bands, most notably Lester Lanin's. As word of his compositional and arranging skills spread, Harnell also found himself in demand as an accompanist and musical director, and in the years to follow he backed singers ranging from Judy Garland to Maurice Chevalier to Marlene Dietrich, taking over from Burt Bacharach.

Stand Up is the second studio album by the British rock band Jethro Tull, released in 1969. Before recordings for the album began, the band's original guitarist Mick Abrahams resigned because of musical differences with Ian Anderson; Abrahams wanted to stay with the blues rock sound of their 1968 debut, This Was, while Anderson wished to add other musical influences such as folk rock. He was replaced by guitarist Martin Barre, who appeared on every Jethro Tull album from this point on.
Stand Up represents the first album project on which Anderson was in full control of the music and lyrics. The result was an eclectic album with various styles appearing in its songs, yet an album which remained somewhat in the blues rock mould, which would be the last such album from Jethro Tull.

The eighth installment in the GarciaLive series presents the Jerry Garcia Band's November 23rd, 1991 performance at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, WI. The Fall ’91 tour as a whole is widely regarded as one of Garcia’s finest and this particular Saturday evening serves as a further testament to the legend. Fans in attendance at the Bradley Center braved an intense snowstorm and the audience's palpable energy and enthusiasm was a likely catalyst for this spirited performance. Keyboardist Melvin Seals summarized the group nicely stating "That was the magic band. It’s not that the other scenarios didn’t work out but once we got to that level of the band with (drummer) Dave Kemper, John Kahn, Jerry, myself and the singers, Jackie (LaBranch) and Gloria (Jones) we all knew we had something special. That was the band.”
And magic they made! As Dean Budnick notes in the release’s liner note essay, "If at times the Grateful Dead could be something of a turgid Russian novel: convoluted and labyrinthine yet mostly rewarding, the Jerry Garcia Band during this era was more of an Elizabethan sonnet: breezy, emotive and luminous.” The tone is set immediately with a melodious “Cats Under The Stars” opening the evening to the sheer delight of the crowd. Playful and buoyant versions of “Lay Down Sally”, “Ain’t No Bread in the Breadbox”, and “Deal”, along with an incendiary “Tangled Up In Blue” build into peak after peak. The marvelous evening is balanced by soul-soaked performances of “That Lucky Old Sun”, “My Sisters and Brothers” and a positively show-stopping take on The Manhattan’s “Shining Star” which showcases Jerry and the girls singing in beautiful harmony. As the Garcia Band graduated into arenas it could be expected that some of the intimacy might be lost, but on this cold, snowy evening in Milwaukee, they managed to make the Bradley Center feel cozy and warm.

Jens Schowings Blue Note Bach - Nocturne (2017) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Recorded: June 2016, Studio Hire Tonstudio by Christian Mayntz

After two pure Bach albums, the trio now also devotes itself to works by Chopin, Debussy, Mozart and Beethoven. Nocturne stands both for the peace of night as well as for its power to inspire. The album grabs these moods and savors them with pleasure. It takes the listener on a journey from familiar reconnection with classical works to more remote areas of almost free design and interpretation, with arrangements that at times provide a surprising access to the repertoire. Blue Note Bach masters the various characteristics with playful ease thanks to their many years of performing together.
