For her second Warner Classics release, young Italian pianist Beatrice Rana turns to a pinnacle of the solo keyboard repertoire and a composer she has described as “my first love”: Johann Sebastian Bach. Her interpretation of his epic Goldberg Variations bears out Le Monde’s judgement that “Beatrice Rana certainly has nothing left to prove when it comes to technique, but what makes an impression are her calm maturity and her sense of architecture,” and Gramophone’s that she is “a fully developed artist of a stature that belies her tender years.”
Bach was the composer who most obsessed Beatrice Rana as a child, and in a recent interview with Pianist magazine, she confessed that it would be his music, and above all the Goldberg Variations, that she would choose if she had to devote her life to a single composer. As she said: “I’m very happy to be going back to Bach … It’s best to avoid Bach in competitions … you can’t expose yourself to be totally killed by the jury! But Bach is my first love; now I am allowed to play it in public and I’m really looking forward to that.”

Long neglected on a library shelf in Brandenburg Castle, these six ‘Concertos for several instruments’ have since become some of the best-known works in the classical repertoire for their musical inventiveness and their games of mathematical symmetry. Richard Egarr and the Academy of Ancient Music have endeavoured to return to the original ‘chamber’ conception of the works, with one player per part.

Johann Sebastian Bach - St. John Passion, BWV 245 - Netherlands Bach Society, Jos Van Veldhoven (2005) High-Fidelity DSF Stereo DSD64/2.82MHz

Artist: Netherlands Bach Society, Jos Van Veldhoven
Title: Bach, J.S. - St. John Passion, BWV 245 (1st version, 1724; reconstruction: Pieter Dirksen)
Genre: Classical, Choral
Label: © Channel Classics Records B.V.

Recorded: March 2004 Waalse Kerk, Amsterdam, the Netherlands

As with the work itself, there’s no recording of Bach’s St. John Passion that stands as preeminent and certainly none that can claim to be definitive. But, if you accept Jos van Veldhoven’s decisions regarding certain key aspects of this performance–including the reconstruction of some parts–this one comes very close. Aside from the various versions of the score that Bach himself created, performances are widely varied in terms of instrumentation (numbers and types of instruments and how they are used) and vocal forces (most significantly, how many singers to a part). Here, Veldhoven has chosen to attempt to reconstruct and perform the St. John in a version as close as possible to what was heard at the work’s premiere in 1724. You can read the rationale for and details of this effort in the excellent liner notes, but suffice it to say that some guesses and reconstructive decisions had to be made in several cases, both in vocal and orchestral parts. Most shocking to listeners familiar with this work is the total absence of flutes, which opens up the orchestral sound to a new and very different world of color.

Jean Rondeau, the imaginative young French harpsichordist, describes the Bach family as “one of the great dynasties of western music”. Having devoted his first Erato disc, Imagine, to works by the towering Johann Sebastian, he now returns to Bach’s world for his third release, Dynastie, which complements concertos by Johann Sebastian with concertos by his three most famous sons, Wilhelm Friedemann, Carl Philipp Emmanuel and Johann Christian.

Rondeau has described JS Bach, who has been part of his life since his childhood, as “daunting like a mighty mountain”, but at the same time feels that “his music is so full of humility, so generous, that we have the right and the duty to play it, to share it, and to take the hand that he extends to us.”

The border is not straight and clear, but on both sides lies a treasure of music and lyrics that we must have to stay alive - in our day and future , as an inheritance . . . Leif Strand and the musicians on this record, offer a kind of continuation of the sorrow and the joy.

Recorded: December 1975 and January 1976 at Sound Labs, Hollywood, CA

„The Man Incognito“ is the fourth album by American jazz drummer Alphonse Mouzon recorded in 1975. Drummer Alphonse Mouzon recorded this jazz funk masterpiece in 1976 backed by an almost encyclopaedic cast of musicians. „The Man Incognito“ may refer to the appearance of George Duke under a pseudo name, whose funky keyboards are a highlight throughout. ‘Snake Walk’ is a great punchy jazz funk dancer with great horn stabs and a real standout. ‘New York City’, ‘Without a Reason’, ‘Mouzon Moves on’ and ‘Dance Your Troubles Away’ are jazz funk with a capitol F. The more atmospheric ‘Before You leave’ and the dynamic ‘Behind Your Mind’ add contrast to this lesser known but substantial album.

Recorded live at the Berlin Jazz Days, 6 November 1976 at the Berlin Philharmonic; Engineered by Carlos Albrecht at Tonstudio Bauer, Ludwigsburg, Germany

Trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff was a major innovator, one of only a few Europeans who has had an influence on jazz instrumentalists worldwide. He refined multiphonics, a technique utilizing vocalizing into the horn to produce chords and overtone effects. Often performing as a soloist, he also played/recorded with Elvin Jones, John Lewis, Wolfgang Dauner, and Lee Konitz. Trilogue, Live in Montreux, and Triple Entente are all played in trio with Albert’s amazing technique and multiphonics in full display.
Trilogue :: Legendary Weather Report electric bassist Jaco Pastorius and quintessential jazz-fusion drummer Alphonse Mouzon join Mangelsdorff at the 1976 Berlin Jazz Days for a combustion of creativity. Trilogue starts off solo with a multiphonic melody line and then opens up with free-wheeling give-and-take between the three. Zores Mores is straight ahead swing with Mangelsdorf’s masterful oblique phrasing and the pyrotechnical playing of Pastorious and Mouzon. There’s a bit of Spain and Flamenco in Foreign Fun with Mouzon laying down a complex carpet of sound and Pastorious setting up drone-like riffs. Accidental Meeting doesn’t seem to be so accidental after all. Albert writes three musical phrases, each composed in a different city, and then three separate musical beings converge as if predestined. Ant Steps On An Elephant’s Toe has a mix of the quick and the ponderous as Albert prances, plunger mute in hand, to a funky fusion rhythm. Multiphonics galore.
