In 2014 ECM New Series featured Kremerata Baltica in a widely-praised album dedicated to the music of Mieczysław Weinberg. Now Gidon Kremer’s orchestra continues the story, turning its attention to the four chamber symphonies completed in the last decade of the Polish-born Soviet composer’s life. The arc of the album – recorded in Vienna and in Riga in June 2015 – also embraces a striking new arrangement, by Gidon Kremer and Kremerata percussionist Andrey Pushkarev, of Weinberg’s early Piano Quintet.

The characters brought to life in the Baroque-era operas of great composers such as Handel and Vivaldi – protagonists whose passions, loves, misfortunes, hopes, and longings unfold before us on stage – are, in reality, musical depictions of the myriad journeys experienced by the human soul.
The magnificent mezzo-soprano Julie Boulianne gives to the chosen arias all their grandeur, their grace and their beauty and the quality of the ensemble Clavecin en concert’s playing is once again irreproachable. Gorgeous!

The Vibrations - Misty (1966/2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

Think again if you thought The Temptations in a Mellow Mood (an album of standards) pioneered this concept by a '60s soul group; this smooth set preceded the Temptations' album by a couple of years and probably inspired the Motown classic. The dancing, exciting Vibrations shocked their fans with this early-'60s release of standards sung in modern but soulful harmony. It was before its time and wasn't really appreciated until years later when it was out of print. "Misty" charted, but the California natives also serve up excellent renditions of "The Days of Wine and Roses," "I Wish You Love," "What Kind of Fool Am I," and "Gina." The Vibrations' Okeh albums are excellent but rare, each deserves reissuing on CD, and why this hasn't happened is a mystery. --AllMusic Review by Andrew Hamilton

The harmony vocal group the Modernaires originally formed in Buffalo, NY, in 1935 (all of its members were high school pals), and were best known for singing with orchestras. Starting off as a trio (including members Hal Dickinson, Chuck Goldstein, and Bill Conway), the group would often assume a different name during these engagements, going by the Don Juan-Two and Three when they performed with the Ted Fio Rito Orchestra and the Three Wizards of Ozzie during a stint with the Ozzie Nelson Band. Soon after, the Modernaires expanded to a quartet with the addition of member Ralph Brewster, as they joined Paul Whiteman's musical organization in 1937, leading to performances on his radio show.
The Modernaires received their big break two years later, when the one-and-only Glenn Miller asked them to record a sequel to his big hit "Make Believe Ballroom," titled "It's Make Believe Ballroom Time," as they began performing regularly around the world with the Miller Band. Further hits with Miller soon followed, including "Chattanooga Choo Choo," "Kalamazoo," "I Know Why," and "Juke Box Saturday Night," as the Modernaires welcomed another member, Paula Kelley, to their ranks (who was the wife of Dickinson). The Modernaires were handpicked by Frank Sinatra in 1950 to back him up, as the group continued to record and perform steadily until 1958. Many Modernaires compilations have been issued over the years, including 2001's The Very Best Of on the Collectables label. --Artist Biography by Greg Prato

The Jordanaires - The Big Country Hits (1966/2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

For over 40 years, the Jordanaires remained one of the premier backup vocal groups in country music, working with such greats as Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline, George Jones, and, of course, Elvis Presley. The quartet began in Springfield, MO during the late '40s, featuring original members Bob Hubbard, Bill Matthews, Monty Matthews, and Culley Holt, and sang barbershop and spirituals. They debuted on The Grand Ole Opry in 1949. The group changed members during the early '50s, with Gordon Stoker and Hoyt Hawkins replacing Hubbard (who was drafted) and Bill Matthews (who became seriously ill). In 1953, Monty Matthews left the group for personal reasons, and was replaced by Neal Matthews.
By 1954, the Jordanaires were singing behind artists such as Elton Britt, Red Foley, and Jimmy Wakely. That year they appeared on Eddy Arnold's television show, but didn't get their big break until Elvis Presley, a longtime fan, invited the group to back him after receiving a major recording contract from RCA Victor. When Elvis became a star, he honored his promise to keep them as his backup singers, and they worked with him until 1970, appearing in many of his films and on his gospel recordings. In 1954, Culley Holt became ill and was replaced by Hugh Jarrett; he left in 1958 and was replaced by Ray Walker.
When not backing Elvis, the Jordanaires were busy making their own mark in country music. Neal Matthews was a talented arranger and was responsible for Jim Reeves' massive hit "Four Walls" (1957). In 1959, the Jordanaires began working with Patsy Cline, and also devised the Nashville number system of chords that is still widely used in recording studios and performances. They also recorded their own gospel and country albums. It was the Jordanaires who provided the main impetus for the formation of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists/Screen Actors' Guild in Nashville. They also established Nashville's commercial jingle market, which helped singers like Janie Fricke and Judy Rodman get their start. --Artist Biography by Sandra Brennan

Franz Schubert - Winterreisen - Daniel Behle, Oliver Schnyder Trio (2014) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/88,2kHz

Camille Saint-Saens - Organ Symphony - Gaston Litaize, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Daniel Barenboim (1976/2003) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Сomposer: Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921)
Artist: Gaston Litaize, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Daniel Barenboim
Title: Saint-Saens: Symphony No. 3 "Organ"
Genre: Classical
Label: © Deutsche Grammophon GmbH
Release Date: 1976/2003
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit
Source: Qobuz
Duration: 00:56:20
Recorded: May 1975, in Studio Medinah Temple, Chicago, United States

This celebrated recording of Saint-Saëns’ Third stands as one of the very few performances to challenge the acclaimed Munch/Boston version on RCA. It features playing of great panache (with a truly high-voltage finale), and if the strings in the first-movement allegro aren’t as tidy as some, Barenboim more than compensates by taking the movement gratifyingly up to speed. The big question for most collectors concerns the remastering, and here I have to say that it strikes me as an unqualified success.

The Ultimate Collection is the first career-spanning Roy Orbison anthology.
Roy’s son, Alex Orbison, painstakingly selected songs that were most representational of his father’s vast catalog, which totals 27 studio albums, four live albums, and over 60 singles, 22 of which placed in the U.S. Billboard Top 40 chart. Narrowing it down was no easy task. “It is a great honor for me and my brothers, Wesley and Roy Jr., to finally and definitively distill our father’s entire career onto a single disc as best one can possibly do and, certainly, as never done before,” said Alex. “It is the result of years of research, archiving and listening, and it is with supreme and heartfelt pleasure that we will be able to share it with the world.”
The Ultimate Collection was produced by Alex Orbison, Chuck Fleckenstein and John Jackson, and mastered by Vic Anesini at Battery Studios in New York.
