Nikolay Medtner’s 14 piano sonatas are considered the most significant achievement in this genre by any composer since Beethoven. After the success of his First Piano Sonata (GP617) he turned to Goethe for inspiration, and the life and love-affirming Sonata-Triad Op. 11 translates the poet’s words of passion, suffering and redemption into sound. The capricious, mysterious and beautiful Sonata-Skazka is a masterpiece in miniature and was once Medtner’s most performed work. Dating from his years of exile, the eloquent themes of the fourteenth and final Sonata-Idyll linger long in the memory.

The pianist Massimo Giuseppe Bianchi signs his first CD with the label Decca. It is titled Around Bachand is a homage to the timeless beauty and inspiring power of Johann Sebastian Bach’s music.
Around Bach is an unusual approach through its inclusion of works that the composer has inspired, either explicitly or implicitly, from nineteenth and twentieth century authors. The journey begins with the Toccata e Fuga in D Minor BWV, originally composed for the organ, but brilliantly transcribed for the piano by Ferruccio Busoni. It ends with the Capriccio sopra la lontananza del fratello dilettissimo BWV 992. The CD also includes two antithetical cycles of Variazioni: the work of Max Reger and of the Chorale Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen by Franz List, the latter of which is virtuosic and almost frenzied, yet surprisingly delicate. Even more distant from the character of Bach is the Prelude, Choral et Fugue di César Fanck. In this work Bianchi emphasizes the dense texture of illusionistic references and stylistic juxtapositions.
To quote the pianist: “Today, the Bachian universe still reverberates with its light intact, and it is a light that does not give in to the darkness even at sunset. It’s teaching, tender as a mother’s warning, haughty like the beauty of other regions, does not cease to question, to regenerate and rejuvenate in an unending cycle.”
Massimo Giuseppe Bianchi, a refined and virtuoso soloist, boasts important collaborations on his new CD, beginning with Bruno Canino, Antonio Ballista, Aron-Quartett and the Orchestra da Camera di Mantova. Bianchi is also well-known in the jazz scene, especially for his intense collaboration with Enrico Pieranunzi. He is a brilliant popularizer of the philosophy of music and he has also edited the critical edition of works by Respighi, Carpi and Castelnuovo-Tedesco.
