Called “The hippest cat ever to Swing an accordion”, Art Van Damme was born in the small town of Norway, Michigan in 1920. The 40’s and 50’s saw the classically trained Van Damme revolutionize the way the accordion was played, removing it from its stereotyped role as a polka playmate; in 1947 Van Damme made the cover of the prestigious jazz magazine Downbeat and was voted “Top Accordionist” 10 years in a row. He starred on such popular American TV programs as “Today”, “The Dinah Shore Show”, and “The Tonight Show”, and toured Europe some 40 times. With his decision to combine guitar and vibes with accordion, Van Dam’s groups developed a unique sound early-on. His recordings with MPS were some of his best, given the company’s predilection of allowing the musicians a free hand. As one reviewer put it, Van Damme played “…right-hand runs with a velocity and lightness of touch that defied the presumed limitations of the instrument, consistently emphasizing the lyric contours of a melodic phrase rather than the lightning technical flourishes that led up to it.”

Tango Song and Dance was composed in 1997 as a set of lighthearted virtuoso pieces for Anne-SophieMutter. At the time, the Tango revival craze had not yet been born, and so the first movement with its purposeful and exaggerated Tango clichés was still possible. The clustered harmonies are not terribly far removed from the sound the traditional accordion makes, and the whole movement should be full of self-conscious poses. Not much needs to be said about the middle movement; the title Song is self-explanatory. The violin predominates throughout, and the accompaniment is simple and direct. The Dance is a bit more complicated. Just when the rhythm threatens to relax into eight beats per bar, it trips over the last note and becomes seven. I doubt whether dancers would be happy keeping time to this, but of course for two instrumentalists it becomes a good deal easier. The ending is percussive and relentless and an unadulterated C major puts the final stamp on things. --André Previn

Amongst a plethora of musical styles and genres extant during the mid-18th century, the music of Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770) finds a special place. Despite a quintessential expressive style of performance and embellishment, he was to become and remain influential across the known musical world, and his legacy was essential to violin playing for at least the next century. Tartini’s obscure writings about Nature and music reveal a close relationship to widespread ideas of a time that was to become known as The Age of Reason. However, these came with a twist: his 135 violin concertos and 200 sonatas, of which many are rarely performed today, still appear enigmatic – impalpable and mysterious. The sonorous Hardanger fiddle, an ideal instrument for imitating the traditional Italian bagpipes, appears in this recording as a tribute to the composer’s frequent use of traditional folk music motifs.

Along with guitarists such as Lage Lund, Peter Bernstein and his fellow countryman Gilad Hekselman, Yotam Silberstein represents one of the inspiring and influential forces of jazz, and guitar, in NYC and around the world. Following up four recordings as a leader and dozens of recordings as a sideman, Silberstein is proud and happy to present his new recording, The Village, to the world. It is by far his finest work, in that Silberstein was able to bring together many influences that are meaningful to him, including music from the Middle East, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Uruguay and of course jazz and blues, all fully absorbed and forged into a unique and coherent voice. For the recording of The Village Silberstein surrounded himself with close friends, Aaron Goldberg (piano), Reuben Rogers (bass) and Gregory Hutchinson (drums), who collectively could only be described as a world-class, dream-team rhythm section, allowing the grandeur of the guitarist’s mastery to shine through unadulterated.

Recorded: MCO studio 1, Hilversum, October 2015 (Hartmann, Hindemith); BMC studio, Budapest, August 2015 (Grunelius, Fischer)

The title of this album, featuring two world premieres (Grunelius and Fischer), is taken from the composition by the German pianist and composer Wilhelm von Grunelius. The inspiration for his work for flugelhorn, timpani and strings came from the poem ‘Chant d’automne’ by the French poet and art critic Charles Pierre Baudelaire (1821-1867). The use of texts is a recurring theme in this colourful programme of music for the trumpet in a variety of combinations. At the end of the final movement of his Sonata for trumpet and piano, ‘Trauermusik’, Paul Hindemith incorporates Bach’s chorale ‘Alle Menschen mussen sterben’ (BWV 634). In his Eine Deutsch-Jiddische Kantate, Iván Fischer employs texts by Avrom Sutzkever, Rainer Maria Rilke, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and others. The recording is also of particular value in view of the fact that the two world premieres of music by Grunelius and Fischer are performed by the Budapest Festival Orchestra under Iván Fischer himself, while he also conducts his own Eine Deutsch-Jiddische Kantate, with his daughter Nora Fischer as soprano soloist.
