Composer Arnold Schönberg considered it vitally important to study the techniques of other composers in order to thus penetrate more deeply into the true content of their music - and he believed the best way to do this was by arranging the original compositions. And thus between May and September 1937, Schönberg penned an orchestral version of the Piano Quartet in G minor by Johannes Brahms. His first reason was personal: “I like the piece.” But the other two were more of a practical nature. “It is seldom played. It is always very badly played, because the better the pianist, the louder he plays, and you hear nothing from the strings. I wanted for once to hear everything, and this I have achieved.”
In this regard, conductor Marc Albrecht and Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra prevail, with individual instruments and sections coming forward in carefully drawn sections. It is a fun Quartet, and one that is brilliantly played by Albrecht and the orchestra. Furthermore, Albrecht’s style suits the composition, with its grand, impressive gestures and vivid colour to the music. When asked why he is so enthusiastic about the composition Marc Albrecht replies, “Schönberg’s contributions made it a true orchestral work: American with a Schönberg-like sound. It is a fantastic trip through an insanely good piece.”
Recorded at the orchestra’s impressive residence - the NedPhO-Koepel, formerly the Majella church - this album also features Schönberg’s own work, Begleitmusik zu einer Lichtspielscene (which translates as ‘Accompaniment to a cinematic scene’). Although the work reflected the customs of silent movies, Schönberg’s original score could not be used for film as it was not possible to adapt the music to the length of the scenes. The première was held in Frankfurt in 1930, without an accompanying film, and led by conductor Hans Rosbaud. Schönberg’s idea was not fulfilled until 1973, when three films by Jean-Marie Straub, Jan W. Morthenson and Luc Ferrari respectively were made to accompany the score.

Anton Bruckner - Symphony No. 1 - Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Jaap van Zweden (2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Сomposer: Anton Bruckner (1824-1896)
Artist: Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Jaap van Zweden
Title: Bruckner - Symphony No. 1
Genre: Classical
Label: © Challenge Records | Northstar Recordings
Release Date: 2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit

Duration: 00:51:23
Recorded: Studio MCO5, Hilversum, Holland, 10 - 13 June 2013 (Movement 1, 2 & 4), 14 June 2012 (Movement 3)

Listening to the First Symphony is a trip of discovery through Bruckner’s countryside, within the triangle formed by Ansfelden (birthplace), St. Florian (with its famous Stift, where Bruckner, first as a choirboy and later as a mature musician, found the much-needed distance from the workaday world to play the extremely beautiful organ) and lastly Linz.
In this First Symphony we already find the characteristics at the heart of Bruckner’s symphonic work: the outer movements exhibit three strongly profiled, truly symphonic themes that cry out for further development, while the polyphony – sometimes quite tightly woven – is an unmistakable part of the structure. No less convincing are the sometimes almost stormy Steigerungen (intensification passages), the elementary rhythmic energy and the extremely rapid modulations. What is still absent are the major chorales and the General-Pausen, the breaks that we already encounter in the Second Symphony (1872), the chief purpose of which was to separate the various thematic constructs. In the Adagio too, Bruckner goes all out in a lengthy quest for the gripping sound of A flat major, which does not let itself be found until the twentieth measure. The brilliant Scherzo is characterised by a highly contagious rhythmic energy that manifests itself in all layers of the orchestra, and only submits to being tamed in the rustic Trio. In the finale, drama and improvisation compete for the main role, but it is so soundly constructed that the entire piece remains in balance. There can be no doubt that Bruckner’s First Symphony is a masterpiece, one that portends the symphonic work yet to come in all its various manifestations.
Bruckner started the first notations for his First Symphony in January 1865 and completed the work on 14 April 1866. He himself conducted the first performance on 9 May 1868 in the Redoutensaal in Linz. In 1877 and again in 1884, the composer gave the score a thorough going-over and made a few modest alterations. But this was not the end of it: between 12 March 1890 and 18 April 1891 he created the Wiener Fassung for Hans Richter, who wanted to conduct the first performance of the First Symphony in Vienna. On this CD you can hear the Linz version. Both on the performance side and in the recording studio, over the years a strong preference has arisen for the Linz version. And the preference is not entirely without reason: the Linz version generally sounds more adventuresome or, if you prefer, somewhat less polished than the Vienna version.

Anton Bruckner - Symphonies 4, 6-8 - Sergiu Celibidache, Munchner Philharmoniker (2012) High-Fidelity DSF Stereo DSD64/2.82MHz

Genre: Classical

Recorded: No. 4: 5 & 6 February 1989, Musikverein
No. 6: 26-30 November 1991, Munich Philharmonic in Gasteig
No. 7: 18 October 1990, Suntory Hall (Tokyo)
No. 8: 20 October 1990, Suntory Hall (Tokyo)

These recordings are from late in Celibidache's career, recorded between 1989 and 1991 (he died in 1996 at the age of 84). They are representative of the expansive and mystical approach to Bruckner that he developed during his tenure with the Munich Philharmonic. The timings tell the tale. The 4th, for example, is over 1 hour 20 minutes long, compared say with 63 minutes for Haitink's Philips recording with the Concertgebouw. No major conductor whom I can find has recorded a 4th that is less than 10 minutes shorter than this one. Interestingly, the expansiveness is not uniform. The major stretch occurs in the finale (30"13' for Celibidache, vs. 19"49' for Haitink).

Recorded: Grande Auditório of the Calouste, Gulbenkian Foundation Lisbon, July 2012

Arabella Steinbacher has firmly established herself as one of today’s leading violinists on the international concert scene, where her mastery of the violin frequently joins forces with the world’s major symphony orchestras. The New York Times summed up her playing as follows: “Balanced lyricism and fire – among her assets are a finely polished technique and a beautifully varied palette of timbres.”
Steinbacher’s feeling for the timeless melodies on this CD runs as deep as her technical command is great. The result is lyricism of the highest order. The album opens with a lush arrangement of Max Bruch’s much-loved, yet surprising, Violin Concerto No. 1, followed by two exquisite pieces: Chausson’s Poème and Steinbacher’s acclaimed interpretation of Korngold’s Violin Concerto in D major.

Four years in the making, Grammy© Award winning trumpeter Brian Lynch’s “Madera Latino” (Latin Wood) project, exploring the music of jazz innovator and master trumpeter Woody Shaw in a Latin Jazz format, is finally out on Hollistic MusicWorks!
The music of the late, great Woody Shaw (1944-1989) - an innovative and highly individual musical lexicon, expressed through both his chosen instrument of trumpet and his equally distinguished compositions - set a standard of excellence and modernity for Black American Music that has not been surpassed in the 50 years since he first came onto the jazz scene. Madera Latino is an exploration of this giant’s music as viewed through the lens of authentic Afro-Caribbean rhythm and framed by the loving treatment of his compositions in virtuosic Latin Jazz style by Grammy© Award winning trumpeter Brian Lynch. It is also a heartfelt tribute to the genius of Woody by a all star lineup of today’s top trumpeters: Lynch, Sean Jones, Dave Douglas, Diego Urcola, Michael Rodriguez, Etienne Charles, Josh Evans, and Philip Dizack.
In trumpet combinations from duo to quartet, these eminent horns explore Shaw classics including In A Capricornian Way, Tomorrow’s Destiny, Zoltan, Song Of Songs, Sweet Love Of Mine, and more, along with two original pieces - one a extended suite - written by Lynch in salute to the profound influence Woody has had on him as a player and composer.
The band for Madera Latino fulfills the promise of Lynch’s audacious concept with élan, precision, and joyous creativity. Percussionists Pedrito Martinez and Little Johnny Rivero, along with bassist Luques Curtis, were integral to the success of Lynch’s 2006 CD Simpático, a [email protected] Award winner in the Latin Jazz category. Add drummer Obed Calvaire, percussionist Anthony Carrillo, and pianist Zaccai Curtis, and a mighty rhythm section emerges to spur and challenge the trumpeters to their utmost efforts in praise of Shaw.
"The combination of Woody’s music and the Afro-Caribbean clave concept was always a natural to me”, states Lynch. “I'm very happy, after many years of thinking about this idea, to finally be able to actualize this tribute to my musical hero, Woody Shaw, in the distinguished company of these amazing trumpeters and my musical family.”
"I am very proud of what Brian has done with this project, and particularly of the depth of sincerity and the meticulousness with which he has treated the re-interpretation of Woody Shaw's original works within the Afro-Latino idiom. My respect and gratitude go out to the musicians on this recording for keeping the spirit of this music - and of one of its last great innovators - alive and strong in the 21st century.” Woody Louis Armstrong Shaw, III
