Recorded: Forum Karlín in Prague, Czech Republic in January 2015

For a large part, thanks to the effort of Johannes Brahms, who introduced him to his publisher Simrock, Czech composer Antonín Dvořák developed into a composer with an international reputation. Don’t we all know his Slavonic Dances, his Symphonies or his chamber music, such as the Dumky Trio or the American string quartet? This album reveals some of the more hidden treasures of Dvořák’s repertoire, namely his overtures, of which he wrote no less than thirteen. In the booklet to the album they are described as follows:
All five overtures on this recording are richly and vividly scored, employing palettes of instruments broader on average than those found in Dvořák’s mature symphonies and sometimes calling for special effects. For their orchestral colour but also their rich expression of poetic content, as well as their purely musical invention and structural mastery, these overtures constitute gems of special brilliance in the treasury of Dvořák’s compositional bequest.
The PKF – Prague Philharmonia recorded this album in January 2015 at the Forum Karlin in Prague under the baton of their 2009-2015 Music Director and Chief Conductor Jakub Hrůša.

Recording: 1963-1970, Kingsway Hall, London; Remastered at 24-bit 96kHz from original analogue tapes by Ian Jones, Simon Gibson and Andrew Walter, Abbey Road Studios, London

It took just two days before the microphones for István Kertész to imprint his name in the minds of Decca’s senior executives. The Budapest-born conductor’s debut recording for the label, made with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in March 1961, projected his high artistry and deep imagination into a bold and individual reading of Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony. Producer Ray Minshull and sound engineer James Brown liked what they heard at Vienna’s Sofiensaal. They recognised Kertész as a conductor for the new stereo age: he was young and handsome — eternally marketable qualities — yet owned the charismatic power, mature musicianship and personal warmth required to draw the best from the best. Minshull’s post-session report opened the door to Kertész’s productive relationship with the label, one that lasted until he fell victim to a tragic drowning accident in the sea near the Israeli city of Herzliya in 1973.
Kertész launched his Decca discography with Dvořák. He soon underlined his credentials as an assured interpreter of repertoire landmarks with recordings of the Grieg and Schumann piano concertos, made with Julius Katchen and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and a disc devoted to a handful of Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances and works by Smetana with the Israel Philharmonic.

John Dowland - Lachrimae or Seven Tears - Phantasm, Elizabeth Kenny (2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Сomposer: John Dowland (1563-1626)
Artist: Phantasm, Elizabeth Kenny
Title: Dowland - Lachrimae or Seven Tears
Genre: Classical
Label: © LINN Records
Release Date: 2016
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit
Source: Linn Records
Duration: 57 minutes 22 seconds
Recorded: July 2015, Magdalen College, Oxford, United Kingdom

Summing up the Renaissance preoccupation with melancholy, this extraordinary collection of dance music for viols and lute includes Dowland's 'signature' piece, Semper Dowland semper Dolens. Dowland reveals a personal world of sublime sadness, grief, anger and melancholy mollified by moments of joy and gladness.
A skilled lutenist, Dowland's intricately-worked parts demand perfect synchronicity between Phantasm and Elizabeth Kenny, who rise to the technical and tempi challenges of marrying their instruments.
The popularity of Dowland's music in his own lifetime continued through the centuries with Lawes, Jenkins and Gibbons all paying homage to Dowland's 'Tears'. Although freed from lyric constraints poetic images linger prompting Phantasm's Laurence Dreyfus to describe this as ‘the most sensuously tuneful hour of music ever written'.

Dean Peer - Think…It’s all good (2000) High-Fidelity DSF Stereo DSD64/2.82MHz

Artist: Dean Peer
Title: Think…It’s all good
Genre: Jazz
Label: © Turtle Records
Release Date: 2000
Quality: DSF Stereo DSD64/2.82MHz
Source: nativeDSDmusic
Duration: 00:58:32
Recorded: 300 year old Mennonite church in Amsterdam, 1999

For ‘Think…It’s all good’, bass player Dean Peer (1959) put together an unusual ensemble in which equal parts of folk, funk, jazz and Indian music are melted into an exciting new amalgam. A true master on the electric bass guitar and famous for his ground-braking harmonics techniques, our man from Boulder, Colorado, has always been into creating new sounds. Not only on his instrument, but also when it comes to ensemble sound. For his third album and debut on Turtle Records, Peer put together tablas and various other percussion, violin, jews’ harp and harmonica. For the album that was recorded in a Mennonite church in Amsterdam, Peer teamed up with violinist Stephen Trishmen, percussionist Ty Burhoe and Howard Levy on harmonica, jews’ harp and other ‘mouth instruments’ like a double ocarina, a four hole pewter ocarina and even a Spa mineral water bottle.
In the meticulously composed framework of the music there’s plenty of room for experiment and improvisation. Rhythm and grooves form a firm base on which a truely transparant arrangement of melody, harmonics and chords can florish. As said, the ingredients reveal musical traces from all over the world, though the first impressions of freedom, funky grooves and virtuoso, sometimes electrically manipulated (violin) playing, give ‘Think…It’s all good’ a particularly Western, contemporary feel.

Recorded: The Farm & Brooklyn Recording

The music of Cuban-born, Brooklyn-based pianist David Virelles conjures a hallucinatory world in which ancient Afro-Cuban rhythms and ritual reverberate in the here and now. His latest ECM offering is Antenna, music attuned to a timeless rhythmic-cultural current even as it pulses with a vibrantly urban, modernist energy. Antenna – a six-track, 22-minute EP to be released exclusively on vinyl and digitally – sees Virelles channel Afro-Cuban percussion into an electro-acoustic, almost psychedelic swirl, one that melds jazz improvisation and organic grooves with digital refraction, shadowy synthesizers, otherworldly field recordings and Cuban street poetry. Antenna is an undulating, throbbing, dizzying dream of sound. Mbòkó, the pianist’s ECM leader debut from 2014, featured in Best Of The Year lists in The New York Times, NPR, iTunes and The Village Voice, among others. The Guardian described Mbòkó as “a jazz-infused world-music project beyond categories,” adding: “Virelles looks set to make big differences in contemporary music for years to come.”

David Linx, Brussels Jazz Orchestra - Brel (2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/44,1kHz

Artist: David Linx, Brussels Jazz Orchestra
Title: Brel
Genre: Jazz, Big Band, Vocal Jazz, Vocal Pop, Chanson française
Label: © Jazz Village | harmonia mundi
Release Date: 2016
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 44,1kHz/24bit
Source: Qobuz

Recorded: Bijloke Studio in Ghent, Belgium on June 24-26, 2015

Brel and Brussels Jazz Orchestra – that’s a captivating combination. Add the internationally renowned vocalist David Linx to the mix and you have a five-star musical project.
Brussels-based BJO and born-in-Brussels David Linx present the music of Jacques Brel from Brussels – it doesn’t get more Brussels than this. BJO musicians Frank Vaganée, Dieter Limbourg, Lode Mertens, Gyuri Spies, Nathalie Loriers and Pierre Drevet have arranged chansons by Jacques Brel for large jazz orchestra and David Linx. Brel classics like La chanson des vieux amants, Bruxelles, Le plat pays, La valse à mille temps and others, as if they were pure jazz standards: du jamais vu!
The idea for a Brel project comes from Brussels Jazz Orchestra. The BJO had already done two successful productions with David Linx, a Belgian living in Paris and one of the greatest jazz vocalists of the moment. It was obvious that they should work with him again. Linx had recorded a song by Brel, and had recently toured with music by Claude Nougaro, a French chanson singer whose style borders on jazz. It’s completely natural for him to sing and swing in French. Two of the songs however will be performed in English: David sings the English version of Amsterdam by David Bowie and an English translation of Isabelle.
Linx: “The Brel songs are very close to my heart. Almost all of my favourites were chosen for this project. What makes it even more enjoyable for me is that Brel sings so often about the two cities where I’ve lived in the past (Brussels and Amsterdam) or the one I live in now (Paris).”

Label: © Columbia Records, a Division of Sony Music Entertainment
Release Date: 2016
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit

Recorded: 2015–2016

As the November 8 UK opening of Lazarus at London’s King Cross Theatre approaches, the cast and band of the original New York production will release their versions of the David Bowie songs from the show as the Lazarus Cast Album on October 21 on ISO / Columbia / RCA Records. The album will be available for pre-order September 16 with all orders receiving instant downloads of the cast versions of “Life On Mars?” (sung by Sophia Anne Caruso) and the title track (sung by Michael C. Hall).
Standing alongside the cast’s interpretations of classics from his canon are the three final David Bowie studio recordings. Co-produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti and recorded with Donny McCaslin and his quartet, the same band that played on Bowie’s ★ album, these last three songs — “No Plan,” “Killing A Little Time,” “When I Met You”— bring completely new dimensions to their cast counterparts. The original ★ version of “Lazarus” is also included on the cast album.
The ★ album has been shortlisted for the 2016 Mercury Prize and as part of the awards ceremony on September 15 Michael C. Hall will be performing the song “Lazarus” with Henry Hey and the Lazarus house band. The show will be broadcast live from the Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith on BBC 4 and BBC Radio 6 Music.
The Lazarus cast album was produced by the show’s musical director Henry Hey, who had previously worked with Bowie on “The Next Day” and features vocals from Hall, Caruso, Cristin Milioti, Michael Esper and other cast members backed by the seven-piece house band Hey assembled for the New York run. The album was recorded January 11, 2016. Upon arriving at the studio, the musicians and cast were shocked and saddened to learn that Bowie had passed away the evening before. Their emotional performances that day are captured on this recording.
The distinctive artwork for the Lazarus cast recording has been designed by Jonathan Barnbrook who also worked with Bowie on the ★, The Next Day, Heathen and Nothing Has Changed albums.
Written by Bowie and Enda Walsh, directed by Ivo Van Hove and produced by Robert Fox, Lazarus opened December 7, 2015 at the New York Theatre Workshop to great critical acclaim. The New York Times raved “Ice-cold bolts of ecstasy shoot like novas through the glamorous muddle and murk of Lazarus, the great-sounding, great-looking and mind-numbing new musical built around songs by David Bowie,” while Rolling Stone hailed it as a “Surrealistic Tour de Force… milk-swimming, lingerie-sniffing, gin-chugging theater at its finest.”

Daniela Spalletta feat. Urban Fabula - D Birth (2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Artist: Daniela Spalletta feat. Urban Fabula

Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit
Source: e-Onkyo
Duration: 01:01:34
Recording: TRP Music, Tremestieri Etneo, Catania, Italy
