Called “The hippest cat ever to Swing an accordion”, Art Van Damme was born in the small town of Norway, Michigan in 1920. The 40’s and 50’s saw the classically trained Van Damme revolutionize the way the accordion was played, removing it from its stereotyped role as a polka playmate; in 1947 Van Damme made the cover of the prestigious jazz magazine Downbeat and was voted “Top Accordionist” 10 years in a row. He starred on such popular American TV programs as “Today”, “The Dinah Shore Show”, and “The Tonight Show”, and toured Europe some 40 times. With his decision to combine guitar and vibes with accordion, Van Dam’s groups developed a unique sound early-on. His recordings with MPS were some of his best, given the company’s predilection of allowing the musicians a free hand. As one reviewer put it, Van Damme played “…right-hand runs with a velocity and lightness of touch that defied the presumed limitations of the instrument, consistently emphasizing the lyric contours of a melodic phrase rather than the lightning technical flourishes that led up to it.”

Art Farmer, Jim Hall - Big Blues (1978/2013) High-Fidelity DSF Stereo DSD64/2.82MHz

Artist: Art Farmer, Jim Hall
Title: Big Blues
Genre: Jazz, Hard Bop, Cool Jazz, Trumpet Jazz, Guitar Jazz
Label: © CTI Records, a division of Creed Taylor, Inc. | King Record Co., Ltd.
Release Date: 1978/2013
Quality: DSF Stereo DSD64/2.82MHz

Duration: 00:34:45
Recorded: February 2 & 3 1978, Electric Lady Studios, New York City

Recorded at Electric Lady Studios in February 1978 and issued on the CTI label in 1978, Big Blues finds flugelhornist Art Farmer and guitarist Jim Hall pairing up for one of their first sessions together since their collaborations in the mid-60s and they literally don't miss a beat. The unique quintet project is rounded out by Mike Mainieri (vibraphone), Michael Moore (bass) and Steve Gadd (drums) and the results are as relaxed as they are lyrical.
The rich 4-track affair opens with a textured take on Benny Golson’s “Whisper Not” and then waltzes through Thad Jones' “A Child Is Born” before running down Jim Hall's own cool/bop title cut "Big Blues" and concluding with a first-rate jazz adaptation of Maurice Ravel's classical standard "Pavane For A Dead Princess."

Art Farmer - Crawl Space (1977/2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

Release Date: 1977/2016
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 192kHz/24bit

Duration: 00:34:55
Recorded: January 1977 at the Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey

No crawl space here – as the sound is wide open, and surprisingly funky – a set that stands as one of Art Farmer's few great 70s outings for the CTI label! The album's got Art blowing with all the cool, compressed sound that he'd bring to a straighter album – but on longer tracks, with that open, flowing vibe you might hear on some of Freddie Hubbard's efforts for the label with less bite, and more flow overall! The set includes great work on flute from Jeremy Steig – plus guitar from Eric Gale, keyboards from Dave Grusin, and drums from Steve Gadd – and although the date of this one is late, the sound is in that prime 1972/1973 CTI mode! The album features four long tracks – and titles include "Crawl Space", "Siddhartha", "Petite Belle", and "Chanson".

Is this the line between folk and spiritual song? Between hymn to Christ's bride and the earthly love song? The border is not straight and clear, but on both sides lies a treasure of music and lyrics that we must have to stay alive - in our day and future , as an inheritance . . . Leif Strand and the musicians on this record, offer a kind of continuation of the sorrow and the joy.

Annie Ross & Pony Poindexter with The Berlin All Stars feat. Carmell Jones and Leo Wright - Recorded at The Tenth German Jazz Festival in Frankfurt (1966/2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Recorded: "10th German Jazz Festival", Frankfurt/Main, May 1, 1966

Lauded for her 1952 underground hit ‘Twisted’, the Englander Annie Ross achieved enduring fame when she joined up to form the iconic vocal trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross. Pony Poindexter was one of the top-flight saxophonists of his era, recording with the likes of Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon, and Eric Dolphy. The back-up band, the Berlin All-Stars, consists of the cream of the American ex-patriot crop, as well as two top European players. Annie and Pony are rockin’ as they sing the crazy story of Louis Jordan’s Saturday Night Fish Fry. Pony sings Oscar Brown’s poignant lyrics to All Blues, followed by a series of outstanding solos. Jon Hendrick’s scrumptious lyrics on Horace Silver’s Home Cooking has Annie taking the melody as well as practicing some vocalise. Pony scats a solo that should make you hungry for more. Annie and Pony sing the Basie classic Jumpin’ at the Woodside in unison, with stand-out solos from Carmell Jones and Leo Wright. The 1952 classic Moody’s Mood for Love became a part of jazz history when Eddie Jefferson put words to James Moody’s 1949 sax solo on I’m in the Mood for Love. Miss Ross takes on this beautiful tongue-twister with aplomb. Annie and Pony stroll through the blues on Basie’s Goin’ to Chicago, as Saxophonist Wardell Gray’s Twisted brings the session to an end. Ross’s lyrics to Gray’s solo have become a sharp-witted tongue-in-cheek jazz classic. Annie, Pony, and the gang have serious fun on some of the hippest vocal jazz standards. If you dig jazz singing and vocalese, it’s an album ya gotta have.

Andy Williams - Merry Christmas (1965/2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

Artist: Andy Williams
Title: Merry Christmas

Release Date: 1965/2016

Chances are that when Andy Williams released his first holiday album in 1963, he had no idea that his name would soon become synonymous with Christmas. The success of the album along with his Christmas television specials became traditional listening and viewing for many families in the years (and even decades) that followed. In 1965, Williams further enhanced his "Mr. Christmas" moniker by releasing a second seasonal collection, Merry Christmas. Although the album did not contain a definitive hit song like "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," it was another well-rounded set of traditional favorites that became a perfect companion to the Andy Williams Christmas Album. The overall tone of Merry Christmas is a bit quieter than the first album but there are still a few lively moments as in the breezy opening "Sleigh Ride," where an infectious "jing-a-ling, jing-jing-a-ling" is sung behind Williams' satiny voice. "Christmas Holiday" was probably meant to be this set's "Most Wonderful Time," but it never caught on in the same way despite having an exciting arrangement and vocal performance. Williams' dark reading of "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music helped to turn the non-holiday oriented song into a Christmas standard while a delicate "Some Children See Him" and the joyous "The Bells of St. Mary's" round out an album that is sung to perfection. Williams would go on to release other holiday collections, but none of them would capture the magical memories created by Merry Christmas and its predecessor. Thanks to good timing, excellent selections, and a voice that makes one feel warm and at home, Andy Williams recorded not just one, but two perennial classics that will be heard for generations to come. --AllMusic Review by Aaron Latham
