Coldplay - Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends (2008) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/44,1kHz

When Coldplay sampled Kraftwerk on their third album, X&Y, it was a signifier for the British band, telegraphing their classicist good taste while signaling how they prefer the eternally hip to the truly adventurous; it was stylish window dressing for soft arena rock. Hiring Brian Eno to produce the bulk of their fourth album, Viva la Vida, is another matter entirely. Eno pushes them, not necessarily to experiment but rather to focus and refine, to not leave their comfort zone but to find some tremulous discomfort within it. In his hands, this most staid of bands looks to shake things up, albeit politely, but such good manners are so inherent to Coldplay's DNA that they remain courteous even when they experiment. With his big-budget production, Eno has a knack for amplifying an artist's personality, as he allows bands to be just as risky as they want to be -- which is quite a lot in the case of U2 and James and even Paul Simon, but not quite so much with Coldplay. And yet this gentle encouragement -- he's almost a kindly uncle giving his nephews permission to rummage through his study -- pays great dividends for Coldplay, as it winds up changing the specifics without altering the core. They wind up with the same self-styled grandiosity; they've just found a more interesting way to get to the same point.
Gone are Chris Martin's piano recitals and gone are the washes of meticulously majestic guitar, replaced by orchestrations of sound, sometimes literally consisting of strings but usually a tapestry of synthesizers, percussion, organs, electronics, and guitars that avoid playing riffs. Gone too are simpering schoolboy ballads like "Fix You," and along with them the soaring melodies designed to fill arenas. In fact, there are no insistent hooks to be found anywhere on Viva la Vida, and there are no clear singles in this collection of insinuatingly ingratiating songs. This reliance on elliptical melodies isn't off-putting -- alienation is alien to Coldplay -- and this is where Eno's guidance pays off, as he helps sculpt Viva la Vida to work as a musical whole, where there are long stretches of instrumentals and where only "Strawberry Swing," with its light, gently infectious melody and insistent rhythmic pulse, breaks from the album's appealingly meditative murk. Whatever iciness there is to the sound of Viva la Vida is warmed by Martin's voice, but the music is by design an heir to the earnest British art rock of '80s Peter Gabriel and U2 -- arty enough to convey sober intelligence without seeming snobby, the kind of album that deserves to take its title from Frida Kahlo and album art from Eugene Delacroix. That Delacroix painting depicts the French Revolution, so it does fit that Martin tones down his relentless self-obsession -- the songs aren't heavy on lyrics and some are shockingly written in character -- which is a development as welcome as the expanded sonic palette. Martin's refined writing topics may be outpaced by the band's guided adventure, but they're both indicative that Coldplay are desperate to not just strive for the title of great band -- a title they seem to believe that they're to the manor born -- but to actually burrow into the explorative work of creating music. And so the greatest thing Coldplay may have learned from Eno is his work ethic, as they demonstrate a focused concentration throughout this tight album -- it's only 47 minutes yet covers more ground than X&Y and arguably A Rush of Blood to the Head -- that turns Viva la Vida into something quietly satisfying. --AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Christian Wallumrod Ensemble - Outstairs (2013) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/44,1kHz

Artist: Christian Wallumrød Ensemble
Title: Outstairs
Genre: Jazz, Modern Jazz, Contemporary Jazz
Label: © ECM Records GmbH | ECM Player | ECM Reviews

Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 44,1kHz/24bit

Duration: 00:55:59
Recorded: May 2013, Auditorio Radiotelevisione svizzera, Lugano

“The immense sonic resources of these players seem to keep on growing” noted The Guardian of their last release, “Fabula Suite Lugano”, and the ensemble of Christian Wallumrød continues to evolve in its own idiosyncratic way on “Outstairs”. By now, Wallumrød’s compositional signature is instantly recognizable. Nobody else writes pieces like this – multi-dimensional chamber music inspired by the sonorities of Norwegian folk and church music, influenced by early music and the post-Cage avant-garde, and liberated by jazz’s freedom of thought. This time around, the ensemble members share the arranging credits between them, making the music still more organic and flexible. New sound combinations emerge, but the genre, the idiom, remains uniquely Wallumrød’s.
Like “Fabula Suite Lugano”, “Outstairs” was produced by Manfred Eicher and recorded at the Auditorio RSI in Lugano, Switzerland. The studio’s naturally clear acoustic sound also contributes to the musical outcome: in Wallumrød’s music, often built of small gestures rather than dramatic flourishes, acute listening is of paramount importance.

Chet Baker - Love for Sale: Live at The Rising Sun Celebrity Jazz Club (2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/44,1kHz

Artist: Chet Baker
Title: Love for Sale: Live at The Rising Sun Celebrity Jazz Club
Genre: Jazz, Cool Jazz, Trumpet Jazz
Label: © Justin Time Records Inc.
Release Date: 2016
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 44,1kHz/24bit

Duration: 01:08:13
Recorded live at Montreal’s Rising Sun Celebrity Club in early 1978

...Love for Sale provides an unexpurgated glimpse into the musical reality of Chet Baker’s last years, a life on the move from club to club across North America and Europe. The music was often loose and ragged. But there is a solo on “Snowbound” that is the kind of Baker moment you wait for. He makes a private offering, unrelated to the frenetic, nasal soprano-saxophone solo and the hard, fast piano solo that precede and follow it. It is fragile threads of luminous melody, discovered by a series of existential choices so slow they sometimes almost stop. --Thomas Conrad, Jazz Times

Chet Baker - She Was Too Good to Me (1974/2013) High-Fidelity DSF Stereo DSD64/2.82MHz

Artist: Chet Baker
Title: She Was Too Good to Me

Duration: 00:36:12
Recorded: July, October, November 1974 at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey

Chet Baker was one of the most important representatives of the West Coast Cool Jazz movement. His heroin addiction is well documented with his exploits and misadventures wrapped in legendary anecdotes, but thankfully his life story never managed to overshadow his unmistakable talent. Chet Baker has one of the most recognisable sounds of all the jazz musicians in the cannon; his trumpet playing is intimate, simple and delicate with a hint of melancholy that tears at the heartstrings.
She Was Too Good To Me was released in 1974 on Creed Taylor's CTI label after a 4 year absence from the scene. And what a comeback: excellent vocal Cool Jazz tunes are interlude with instrumental goodness from the undisputed master of the trumpet.

It was in 1881 that a young man of twenty-six entered the class of Cesar Franck at the Paris Conservatoire. He had had a not too congenial teacher in Massenet. Franck, then fifty-nine and known as the organist at the Church of Sainte-Clotilde, was attracting young pupils to his side (d’Indy, Duparc, Ropartz, Pierne). His own attempts at composition were as yet almost unknown. Yet Franck at once inspired Ernest Chausson with hopes of becoming a composer.

Inspired Christmas music :: Each year from 1684 to 1686, Marc-Antoine Charpentier offered a Christmas pastorale to his patron, Marie de Lorraine. After the death of the boy Louis-Joseph, the last male heir of the line, the figure of the Christ-Child occupied a central place in the devotions of the Guise family. The pastorales and antiphons written in this context and recorded here are at the intersection of the sacred and secular genres, of the popular and the learned. They evoke the mystery of birth with a profoundly moving blend of naïveté and gravity.
