An important transitional figure, Afro-American tenor/soprano saxophonist Lucky Thompson “connected the swing era to the more cerebral and complex bebop style. His sophisticated approach to the tenor saxophone built off that of Don Byas and Coleman Hawkins (NY Times). Thompson recorded with the likes of Bird, Miles, and Monk, and had a slew of albums under his own name. The accompanying hand-picked musicians includes organist Ingfried Hoffmann, known for his work with German star Klaus Doldinger, and percussionist/vibraphonist Sadi, who worked with Django Reinhardt, Don Byas, and Martial Solal. They fit hand-in-glove with Lucky’s musical conception. This1969 gem sparkles with five Thompson compositions and two standards. The name of Lucky’s favorite park when he lived in Lausanne, Switzerland, Sauvabelin features extraverted tenor, guitar and organ solos over a high-flying rhythm section with Sadi on congas. Lady Gail features Lucky on soprano, an instrument he had mastered before Coltrane made it popular. Sadi switches to vibes as the piece swings along with a laid-back joy. Thompson stays on Soprano on the beautiful ballad Street of Dreams as well as his hip jazz waltz Soul City. The band plays a sublimely relaxed version of the standard Easy Living, then Lucky switches back to tenor played with a warm, breathy vibrato for his intimate ballad I Came From Sunday; Centre Ville gets straight to the heart of the matter with outstanding organ and tenor solos. Although an influential and popular player during his lifetime, Lucky never received the recognition his play and compositions deserved. This album helps to remedy that.

Nikolai Medtner is a Russian composer, contemporary of Rachmaninov & Scriabin with German roots and influences. Debargue performed Medtner’s melodious sonata to spectacular success at the 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition with applause that lasted over fifteen minutes. Besides Bach's melancholic Toccata C minor BWV 911, Debargue is keen to engage in forgotten works as with Medtner and further puts a spotlight on the Sonata No. 7 in D major by Beethoven, which remained in the shadow of the famous Pathétique. Debargue only started professional training aged 20 but won the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition's 4th prize only four years later, being described by media as the “real winner” due to his unusual background and magnificent playing.

A new Linda Ronstadt compilation celebrating the resplendent voice of Linda Ronstadt. „Just One Look – Classic Linda Ronstadt“ is featuring 30 newly-remastered tracks on a double album.
The chronologically-assembled collection begins with Michael Nesmith’s timeless “Different Drum” as performed by The Stone Poneys featuring Linda, then jumps forward to the 1973 solo album Don’t Cry Now, overlooking Ronstadt’s three earliest Capitol solo LPs. From that point on, Just One Look touches on all of Ronstadt’s LPs through 1982’s Get Closer. Concentrating on the versatile vocalist’s contemporary pop material, no tracks are culled from her Nelson Riddle and Trio collaborations or her Spanish-language albums; the collection picks up with 1989’s smash Aaron Neville pairing Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind and concludes with tracks from 1993’s Winter Light. No material is included from any of Ronstadt’s subsequent recordings.
Just One Look includes key hit singles from this period including “You’re No Good, “Tracks of My Tears,” “Heat Wave,” “Blue Bayou,” “It’s So Easy” and “Just One Look.” However, note that the tracklisting lacks major hits and favorites from the Ronstadt catalogue such as “Long, Long Time,” “When Will I Be Loved,” “That’ll Be the Day,” “Back in the U.S.A.,” “Ooh, Baby, Baby” and the Grammy-winning American Tail duet “Somewhere Out There.”

Gyorgy Ligeti - Concertos - BIT20 Ensemble, Baldur Bronnimann (2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Сomposer: György Ligeti (1923–2006)
Artist: BIT20 Ensemble, Baldur Brönnimann
Title: Ligeti - Concertos
Genre: Classical
Label: © BIS Records
Release Date: 2016
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit
Source: eClassical.com
Duration: 71:30
Recorded: April 2014 at Grieghallen, Bergen, Norway (Piano Concerto); October 2015 at Landås Kirke, Bergen, Norway (Melodien, Cello Concerto); October 2015 at Oseana Kunst- og kultursenter, Os, Norway (Chamber Concerto)

Described as ‘one of the most innovative and influential among progressive figures of his time’, György Ligeti (1923 – 2006) was able to constantly reinvent himself. In his earliest works, written in Communist Hungary, the musical language is often an extension of that of Bartók’s and he kept his most daring compositions to himself. Escaping Hungary in 1956 he was able to revel in the freedom to experiment – with electronic techniques as well as elaborate serialism – but he was forever sceptical of schools and steered his own course throughout life. The 1960s and early 70s were a highly productive period, which saw works such as Lux Aeterna and Lontano, as well as three of the works on the present disc. In the Cello Concerto and the Chamber Concerto, Ligeti in different ways explores the idea of the concerto as something collective, rather than polarised between the one and the many. The Cello Concerto is striking, and even provocative, in that the soloist often seems to aspire to silence and even absence rather than virtuosic display. The Chamber Concerto, on the other hand, dazzles because here all 13 players are unmistakably present, all essential to the design and character of the whole. Like the Cello Concerto – and the Piano Concerto – Melodien can be performed by large orchestra, but also, as on the present recording, with a single string player per part, becoming a natural pendant to the Chamber Concerto. The disc closes with the Piano Concerto from 1988, which Ligeti had begun sketching eight years earlier but was only able to proceed with after having composed his first set of studies for piano solo. Ligeti himself described the five-movement work as a statement of his ‘aesthetic credo’. Performing these complex scores is the Norwegian specialist ensemble BIT 20 under the Swiss conductor Baldur Brönnimann, with soloists Christian Poltéra and Joonas Ahonen, making his first appearance on the BIS label.

As it has wowed musicians for over a century, the magic of New York City fired the imagination of superstar pianist Lang Lang who is joined by a one-of-a-kind cast of collaborating artists for the creation of his new album, New York Rhapsody. From the haunting reveries of Gershwin and Copland to the in-the-moment intensity of songs made famous by Alicia Keys, Lou Reed and Don Henley, New York Rhapsody rediscovers the dazzle and the soul of America’s most symbolic city as great artists have imagined them.
Lang Lang with Grammy Award®-winning producer Larry Klein have assembled an album that embraces the musical spirit of New York in ways both surprising and traditional. The centerpiece of New York Rhapsody is inevitably Rhapsody in Blue that features Lang Lang and jazz legend Herbie Hancock in a two-piano recreation of Gershwin’s most popular work with the London Symphony Orchestra. Surrounding it are creative collaborations with Lang Lang anchoring each track that reimagine songs reflecting the varying moods and experiences New York offers. Other guest artists include Andra Day, Jason Isbell, Jeffrey Wright, Lindsey Stirling, Madeleine Peyroux, Kandace Springs, Sean Jones, Jerry Douglas and Lisa Fischer.

Lady Gaga - Joanne (2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/44,1kHz

Artist: Lady Gaga

Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 44,1kHz/24bit

Recorded: 2015–2016

It's difficult not to view Joanne through the prism of Artpop, the 2013 album where Lady Gaga's expanding fame balloon finally popped. Ambitious but muddled, Artpop debuted high but came crashing down to the ground, stalling out after the second single, the R. Kelly duet "Do What U Want." Gaga quickly retreated to the confines of cabaret, cutting a nicely accomplished standards album with Tony Bennett, a move that not only gave her the opportunity to work with a legend, but signaled that she considered Artpop a step too far: The camp of Cheek to Cheek was elegant, not garish, an acknowledgment that she was once again back in control of her joke. It set the stage for Joanne, a clever streamlining of the Lady Gaga persona that functions as the opposite of Artpop. All the excesses are excised while the eccentricities are used as accents on songs that are usually well-rendered pop. A few numbers take a passing glance at country music -- the title "Joanne" winks at Dolly Parton's "Jolene"; in a different arrangement, the ballad "Million Reasons" could be an adult contemporary crossover from Faith Hill or Shania Twain -- but Gaga's feet remain firmly planted in dance-pop even when she brings in Father John Misty, Beck, Florence Welch, and Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age for collaborations. Homme co-wrote "Diamond Heart" and "John Wayne," two of the harder disco songs here, while Misty assists on the steady rolling "Sinner's Prayer" -- perhaps the best fusion of country and pop here -- and "Come to Mama," a buoyant throwback to Motown that finds a companion on the Welch duet "Hey Girl," an analog slow jam that floats in the shimmer light. These, plus the riotous "A-Yo" and the masturbation ode "Dancin' in Circles," don't necessarily find comfortable companions in the ballads peppered throughout the album, but executive producer Mark Ronson helps polish Joanne so it flows easily, which is its appeal but also its Achilles Heel. Where previous Gaga albums were high-wire acts, Joanne is decidedly earth-bound, a record made by an artist determined to execute only the stunts she knows how to pull off. --AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
