George Duke - Feel (1974/2014) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/88,2kHz

Artist: George Duke
Title: Feel
Genre: Jazz, Soul Jazz, Jazz Rock, Jazz Funk, Fusion

Duration: 00:41:31
Recorded: 1974, Hollywood, California

This album with the strange psychedelic sci-fi cover draws a tighter circle around Duke’s fusion language. The keyboard master ventures deep into his synthesizer laboratory. Their textures become a more essential component of his pieces, attaining orchestral dimensions, as evidenced in the opener, “Funny Funk”, with its smacking, squishing tongue-in-cheek dialogue between the synths. A virtuoso layering of the keyboards is also central to “Cora Joberge”, and on “Rashid”, Duke’s electronic orchestra explodes over the stormy drums of Leon “Ndugu” Chancler. Duke shows himself to be a singer with a soulful sound. Shortly before this recording he had shelved his trombone so that he could communicate more directly with the audience, as can be heard in the hymnal, dreamlike title piece. The guest list of players make for an especially exciting concoction. No less than Duke’s playing companion Frank Zappa, under the cryptic pseudonym Obdewl’l X, performs some adventuresome guitar passages on “Love” and “Old Slippers”. On the California-sunshine pop samba, “Yana Aminah”, we have a surprise visit by Brazilian Flora Purim, wife of percussionist Airto Moreira, who opens up his bag of tricks on “The Once Over”, and plays on three more tracks.

George Cables - The George Cables Songbook (2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/88,2kHz

Artist: George Cables
Title: The George Cables Songbook
Genre: Jazz, Hard Bop, Post Bop, Vocal Jazz, Piano Jazz
Label: © HighNote Records, Inc.
Release Date: 2016
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 88,2kHz/24bit
Source: HDTracks
Duration: 01:12:51
Recorded: Systems Two, Brooklyn, NY on January 13 & May 6, 2016

In the 1970s and '80s, George Cables was the pianist of choice for saxophonists Dexter Gordon and Art Pepper and he also recorded a lot with jazz stars Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson and Frank Morgan. On Cables' own new album, it's all personal. He's a terrific pianist, but his new album illuminates his gifts as a composer as much as his skill at the keyboard. Cables' student and outstanding vocalist in her own right, Sarah Elizabeth Charles has written lyrics for a number of Cables' instrumental numbers and she appears on the album to deliver them with a real sense of swing, style and sensitivity. Reedman Craig Handy is also featured as is percussionist Steve Kroon, adding some extra subtle color to the proceedings. But the dominant leitmotif throughout it all is Cables and his piano playing which, with all its ease of execution and non-flashy excellence, is always present to give good taste a good name.

Gary Peacock - Voice From The Past - Paradigm (1982/2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

Artist: Gary Peacock
Title: Voice From The Past - PARADIGM
Genre: Jazz, Post Bop, Avant-Garde Jazz
Label: © ECM Records GmbH | ECM Reviews
Release Date: 1982/2016
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 192kHz/24bit
Source: Qobuz
Duration: 00:49:59
Recorded: August 1981, Talent Studio, Oslo

In the realm of the piano trio the bar is set high, and creative bassist Gary Peacock has helped raise it in the groups of Bill Evans, Paul Bley and Keith Jarrett. However, the formative 1981 ECM release Voice from the Past: Paradigm finds Peacock working in a unique quartet setting with stellar accompaniment from Jan Garbarek (tenor & soprano saxophone), Tomasz Stanko (trumpet) and Jack DeJohnette (drums). The uncanny interplay between Peacock and DeJohnette on standouts like "Voice From the Past," "Moor" and "Ode for Tomten" wonderfully foreshadows the top flight work they would go on to do together in just a few years time in Keith Jarrett's trio.
