With the greatest of approval, critics and audience alike had greeted the première of the symphony, which was given a brilliant performance on December 30, 1877 by the Vienna Philharmonic under Hans Richter. All the worries and problems which had dogged and tormented Brahms for almost 15 years during the composition of his Symphony No. 1 were now forgotten. Finally, the breakthrough had come about, after years of battling with the symphonic form and his own selfdoubt, and this second symphony provided a magnificent confirmation of the fact. The shadow of the “giant” Beethoven had definitely been cast off.

Guitarist Ivan Joseph Jones, better known as Boogaloo Joe Jones, was a soul-jazz artist whose brand of cool, funky music can be heard on Prestige releases from the late 1960s and early `70s.
The HighRes-reissued „Right On Brother“ (1970) will give contemporary listeners a healthy dose of Jones's groovy brew. And fans of Grant Green, Kenny Burrell, and Wes Montgomery will know what to expect from Jones's blend of hard bop and R&B. Joseph Bodin de Boismortier did not come from a celebrated family of musicians, as did such notable contemporaries as Jacques Hotteterre (1674–1763) and François Couperin (1668–1733). The son of a merchant confectioner, he held no long-term official post at the French court or other noble or ecclesiastical musical establishment. Acknowledged as being pleasant and good company, clever, original and inventive, he was simply a talented and prolific composer of profitable and popular works that enabled him to live a life of fame and luxury.
Boismortier did not feel the need for what in French is known as succès d’estime, praise from the critics (but with poor sales). Rather, he had real popularity, a popularity that should not prejudice us against the quality of his compositions or his skill as a composer. He was writing for a cultured, knowledgeable and sophisticated audience.
Following on from their critically acclaimed Resonus debut of duets by Johann Joachim Quantz, the second in a series of releases based on research into historical performance practice sees the Elysium Ensemble record an album of the Six Sonates, Op. 51, by Joseph Bodin de Boismortier (1689-1755).
The second in a series of releases based on research into historical performance practice sees Elysium principles Greg Dikmans (flute) and Lucinda Moon (violin) continue their exploration of neglected and lesser-known works continuing the theme of ‘The Art of Elegant Conversation’.
Prolific in his lifetime, publishing over 100 collections of Suites, Sonatas and other instrumental music, Boismortier’s great depth and imagination comes through in these duos for flute and violin brought to life with panache by the Elysium Ensemble.
The sonatas in this collection are among Boismortier’s finest chamber music and are unlike those found in any other collection of duets. First, they are written specifically for the flute and violin and, second, the violin part employs many chords, hence the violon par accords (violin with chords) in the title. The violin plays a dual role: joining in a dialogue with the flute while also providing an harmonic accompaniment. This last characteristic, which could be seen as a design constraint because of the limitation of which chords the violin can or cannot play, means the music evolves in new and interesting ways.
These sonatas demonstrate Boismortier’s harmonic inventiveness and skill at writing agreeable, charming melodies. The close voicing of the chords created by the interplay of flute and violin creates a rich palette of sonorities and textures.

Billie Holiday was a true artist of her day and rose as a social phenomenon in the 1950s. Her soulful, unique singing voice and her ability to boldly turn any material that she confronted into her own music made her a superstar of her time. Today, Holiday is remembered for her masterpieces, creativity and vivacity, as many of Lady Day’s songs are as well known today as they were decades ago. Holiday’s poignant voice is still considered to be one of the greatest jazz voices of all time.
After years on Norman Granz's Clef/Norgran/Verve group of labels, and impressed by arrangements she had heard by Ray Ellis, Holiday cut this album for Columbia in 1958. A highwater mark of her career, Lady In Satin served as Billie's second to last studio effort and final album released during her lifetime. The results are a very smooth, velvety set of tunes that go down like a twelve year old single-malt scotch. Standouts include "I Get Along Without You Very Well" and "You've Changed."

Bertrand Chamayou, described by Gramophone as a “young French pianist of an impeccable pedigree”, is already firmly established as one of the most thoughtful and fascinating pianists of his generation. He has chosen Schubert – with the Wanderer-Fantaisie as the centrepiece – for his first release as an ERATO artist, and, in the course of 2014, the composer’s works will also feature in Chamayou’s recitals in Germany, Belgium, the US (New York), France and Austria.
Born in Toulouse, and a graduate of the Paris Conservatoire, Chamayou had ambitions to be a composer before the piano became his musical priority, and his questing and creative spirit is reflected in a diverse and eclectic repertoire that defies simple categorisation: he has built his reputation with the music of, among others, Liszt, Franck, Messiaen and contemporary composers. It is perhaps not surprising that he drew the attention of Pierre Boulez, a similarly unclassifiable musician, who has conducted Chamayou in concerto performances on a number of occasions.
Gramophone, putting Chamayou’s playing in a class with Alfred Cortot, has praised the way he … “harnesses power and depth alongside his sparkling virtuosity” and noted his “textual clarity, warm and affectionate expression and luminous piano tone”, while International Record Review singled him out for special praise among the younger pianists of today:
“These days, when unprecedented virtuosity is the common coin of an entire of young pianists, it is not easy to describe what precisely puts Chamayou head and shoulders above his peers. His mastery of the piano is flawless; is oneness with the instrument complete. As one listens to his performances, perfection of execution so quickly becomes part of the landscape that you almost forget it. Unblemished by obtrusions of ego or exhibitionism, what we hear seems some pure distillation of musical thought, some unadorned essence of poetic utterance, as though a fleeting ideal were captured and held aloft in all its radiance. When Chamayou plays, you believe every note.”
France’s leading music awards, Les Victoires de la Musique, have traced the trajectory of Chamayou’s career: in 2006 he was named as the year’s ‘Révélation’ (outstanding young talent), while 2011 brought him the prize for Solo Instrumentalist and 2012 for Best Recording.
In the concert hall, conductors with whom he has collaborated include Semyon Bychkov, Andris Nelsons, Leonard Slatkin, Neville Marriner, Michel Plasson, Stéphane Denève and Jérémie Rhorer, while among his chamber music partners are fellow ERATO artists Renaud Capuçon, Gautier Capuçon and Quatuor Ebène.

With the release of this live recording of Hector Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique, RCO Live celebrates the start of its collaboration with Daniele Gatti as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra's seventh chief conductor on 9 September 2016. His unconventional take on this spectacular score evokes the astonishment audiences must have experienced at the time of the 1830 premiere. It is exactly this sense of surprise and freshness – founded on a thorough knowledge of the score – and the sheer joy of making music together that prompted the members of the RCO to choose Daniele Gatti as their new chief conductor.
