Recorded: München, Philharmonie im Gasteig 14.–17. April 2015 (Strawinsky); München, Herkulessaal der Residenz 13. / 14. November 2014 (Mussorgsky)

Two well-known masterpieces of Russian music complement each other perfectly on the latest CD of Mariss Jansons and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. Firstly, Stravinsky's ballet music "Petrushka" in its 1947 version which, with its smaller orchestra and more prominent piano part (played by Lukas Maria Kuen), is more of an instrumental work, or "a kind of concert piece"; and secondly, Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition." Originally written in 1874 as a piano cycle, it can be heard here in the colourful, universal and engaging orchestral version of 1922 by Maurice Ravel, which made it world-famous.
The recordings were made in November 2014 (Mussorgsky) and April 2015 (Stravinsky) at concerts in the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residenz and in the Philharmonie im Gasteig.

Recorded live at Keystone Korner. San Francisco, May 11-16, 1976

Recorded the same week as Getz/Gilberto '76, Resonance Records' companion album, 2016's Moments in Time, captures saxophonist Stan Getz performing live at San Francisco's Keystone Korner in May 1976. To celebrate the release of Getz's reunion album with Brazilian singer/guitarist João Gilberto, 1976's The Best of Two Worlds, the saxophonist booked a week of shows at the Keystone backed by his quartet and featuring Gilberto. Whereas Getz/Gilberto '76 showcases the Gilberto performances, Moments in Time finds Getz appearing alone with his band, featuring pianist Joanne Brackeen, drummer Billy Hart, and bassist Clint Houston. Despite the wealth and fame he accumulated from his initial 1960s bossa nova albums, Getz remained a creatively restless, forward-thinking artist over the coming years. His band here, arguably one of his best of the period, also bore this forward-looking vision out with performances that straddled the line between lyrical intimacy and aggressive, extroverted improvisation. One can also see where Getz's taste was at the time based on his song choices, pulling together standards like "Summer Night" with more harmonically layered pieces like Wayne Shorter's languid and sultry "Infant Eyes" and the funky Kenny Wheeler composition "The Cry of the Wild Goose." As with Getz/Gilberto '76, Moments in Time is a thoughtfully curated package featuring not only some of Getz's best live performances of the period, but also liner notes from producer Zev Feldman, Keystone Korner club owner Todd Barkan, and others, as well as interviews with bandmembers Hart and Brackeen. --AllMusic Review by Matt Collar

Jean Sibelius - Symphony No. 2, Finlandia, Karelia Suite - Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Mariss Jansons (2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/48kHz

Сomposer: Jean Sibelius (1865-1957)
Artist: Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Mariss Jansons
Title: Sibelius - Symphony No. 2, Finlandia, Karelia Suite
Genre: Classical
Label: © BRmedia Service GmbH
Release Date: 2016
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 48kHz/24bit

Duration: 01:10:12
Recorded: München, Herkulessaal der Residenz, 12./13.11.2015 (Symphonie Nr. 2); München, Philharmonie im Gasteig, 15./16.10.2015 (Finlandia, Karelia-Suite)

The latest new release from BR KLASSIK gathers together on one CD the most famous and popular musical works of the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. The music of the symphonic poem "Finlandia", op 26, which premiered in Helsinki in 1899 as a "historical tableau" from Finnish history, inspired Sibelius's compatriots immediately. The work - as it were the unofficial national anthem of Finland - became internationally known in 1900, and continues to be world-famous today, not only because of the hymn-like chorale that concludes it. Sibelius's "Karelia" Suite op. 11, composed some years earlier, which refers to the Finnish landscape of Karelia and the legends of the "Kalevala" epic, was also received very enthusiastically by the national Finnish movement at that time and soon became internationally famous as well. The Symphony No. 2, op 43, the best-known and most popular of the composer's seven completed symphonies, premiered in 1902. With this work Sibelius managed to emancipate himself, moving from being a merely national Finnish composer to an international one. The clear, confident character of the work goes far beyond the purely "exotic" national style, and its "absolute" music remains unaffected by any extra-musical programme. Whether we appreciate Sibelius as an absolute musician or as Finland's national composer, and whether we regard his music as international or as an expression of Finland's struggle for independence – as his compatriots have done to this day – the music remains highly individual and unique, and has successfully established itself in the international concert repertoire. The exemplary interpretations on this CD by the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks under its chief conductor Mariss Jansons were recorded at several Munich concerts during the autumn of 2015. Sensitively conducted and full of gripping majesty, the performances show clearly why Sibelius's symphonies have retained their importance to the present day.

Sebastiao Tapajos - Bienvenido Tapajos (1973/2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/88,2kHz

Artist: Sebastião Tapajós

Recorded: June 22 & 23, 1972 at Somil-Studios, Rio De Janeiro

Touted as a musician who combines the folk-oriented play of Brazilian guitarist Baden Powell and the classical virtuosity of Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia, Brazilian guitarist Sebastio Tapajos’ jazz-inflected style has earned him international fame. He has played and recorded with the likes of Gerry Mulligan, Astor Piazzolla, Oscar Peterson, and Hermeto Pascoal; the Academia Brasileira de Letras designated Tapajos as the best Brazilian musician of 1992. For Bienvenido, Tapajos chose the perfect complement of Brazilian players, including two percussionists who create a living landscape of sound. Pedalando and Morneboca De Ouro are driven by the feel of samba and Carnival joyfully accentuated by the two percussionists, while Despedida/Favela finds Tapajos in duo with the bass. He takes the prayer-like ballad Feitio solo, as he does Argentine tango legend Astor Piazolla’s intriguing Adios Nonino. The Bach-inspired Criz silhouettes Tapajos’ classical side, whereas a fascinating percussive pulse propels the darker feel of Um Abaraco. Tapajos lovingly plucks and strums the melody of Baden Powell’s Choro para Metronomo, and Samba Potburri intermingles pieces by Brazilian icon Jobim and Tapajos. The waltzing lullaby Caxinha De Musica is a fitting end to this beautiful album.

Pentatone is combing two of its best-selling recordings, Franz Schubert: Complete Works for Violin and Piano Volume one and two to a double Super Audio-CD set. The recordings by these two brilliant German artists, Julia Fischer and Martin Helmchen — which were originally launched in in 2009 (Vol 1) and 2010 (Vol 2) — were remarkably successful from both a critical and a commercial standpoint. As it is the violin and piano works that constitute the essential enchantment, one can hardly imagine that somebody would be interested in one without wanting the other as well.
These performances, which were charmingly recorded in a warm acoustic space form, perfectly balanced conversations between two vibrant young personalities. As Pentatone once again collaborated with its trusted partner Polyhymnia International recording studio, with its outstanding reputation for the quality of its multi-channel surround sound recordings, it goes without saying that this album will be a delight to music aficionados’ ears.

Recorded and mixed at Sound Labs, Inc. Hollywood, CA; Additional recording at RCA Recording Studios, New York, NY

A founding member of the popular 1960s female soul group Patti LaBelle & the Blue Belles, Sarah Dash continued to pursue a variety of outlets for her creative talents. In addition to recording four impressive solo albums, Dash has sung on albums by the Marshall Tucker Band, Laura Nyro, and the Rolling Stones. In addition to recording with Keith Richards' X-Pensive Winos, she twice toured the United States with the all-star band. Dash has recorded duets with Richards, Doctor York, Patti LaBelle, and Ray, Goodman & Brown.
The seventh of 13 children, Dash was born in Trenton, NJ. Her father was Church of Christ father of the state of New Jersey and a bishop, while her mother was a nurse. Although she initially sang gospel music, Dash turned to secular music as a pre-teen, when she formed a vocal duo, the Del Capris, with schoolmate Nona Hendryx. The two women were soon joined by Cindy Birdsong and Patricia "Patti LaBelle" Holte. Originally named the Blue Bells, the quartet changed their name to Patti LaBelle & the Blue Belles after discovering that the name the Blue Bells was already taken by another group.
Patti LaBelle & the Blue Belles were a success from the onset. Their debut single, "I Sold My Heart to the Junkman," was a hit, and the group was chosen to open shows during the Rolling Stones' first American tour. Although many believed that they were in danger of breaking up after Birdsong left to join the Supremes, the three remaining members moved to England for a year and dramatically changed their image and musical approach. Returning to the United States as LaBelle, the three vocalists began performing in space-age costumes and featuring cutting-edge, sexually oriented, and politically charged tunes. Dash's four-and-a-half-octave voice and her pension for silver bras, space-age skirts, and flowing feathers continued to draw attention. The revised edition of the group even surpassed the success of the original, with the Top Ten single "Lady Marmalade." Though they separated in the late '70s to pursue solo careers, the members of LaBelle reunited to record a single, "Turn It Out", for the Steven Spielberg-produced film To Wong Foo: Thanks for Everything! in 1995. The tune quickly zoomed to the top position on the Billboard dance charts.
Signed as a soloist by the Kirschner record label, Dash released her self-titled debut solo album, which featured the hit disco single, "Sinner Man," in 1978. Although she continued to record as a soloist, Dash increasingly worked as a session vocalist. She appeared on the Marshall Tucker Band's 1981 album, Tuckerized, and began a long involvement with Keith Richards when she appeared on his 1988 album, Talk Is Cheap, singing two duets, "Make No Mistake" and "Rock Awhile." She continued to work with Richards and his band, the X-Pensive Winos, singing on Richards' 1991 album Live at the Hollywood Palladium and his 1992 album Main Offender, for which she co-wrote the single "Body Works." Dash also appeared on the Rolling Stones' Steel Wheels.
The author of an autobiography, Dash of Diva, Dash also wrote and appeared in a self-penned musical of the same title that was presented at the Cross Roads Theater in New Brunswick. Much of Dash's focus since the early '90s has been on helping to raise money for homeless single women with children in New York. --Artist Biography by Craig Harris

Parts from interview of Rosanne Philippens with music journalist Guido van Oorschot (from: liner notes)
...It began with a piece which I fell in love with: Eugène Ysaÿe’s Poème élégiaque. You have to tune the bottom violin string a tone lower. That explains the dark character, which you hear particularly in the middle, which is a funeral march. Ysaÿe dedicated it to Gabriël Fauré. And so the idea for this CD was born: violin music by composers who honoured and inspired one another.
...The composers featured on this CD knew and respected one another. You can imagine them enjoying a glass of wine together in a cafe or a conversation in a salon. That sort of connection appeals to me, for today artists tend to work on their own. I often think about setting up a contemporary salon, a place where colleagues meet regularly and talk about art, discovering new things and inspiring each other.
...Is this a romantic CD? The word sounds a little inadequate, too flowery and sentimental. Romanticism can be a very serious matter. Sturm und Drang, love and death, profound emotions, feelings, feelings, feelings. This is my first CD on the 'Barrere' Stradivarius dating from 1727. It has a warm, round tone, or rather: all sorts of sound layers with which I can express all those romantic emotions. I hope that the listener will come into contact with his own emotions. Or to put it more strongly: that he will catch a glimpse of his own soul.
