Alphonse Mouzon - Virtue (1977/2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/88,2kHz

Artist: Alphonse Mouzon
Title: Virtue
Genre: Jazz, Fusion, Soul Jazz, Jazz Funk, Jazz Rock
Label: © MPS - Musik Produktion Schwarzwald | Edel Germany GmbH
Release Date: 1977/2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 88,2kHz/24bit
Duration: 44:09
Recorded: November 1976 at Tonstudio Zuckerfabrik Stuttgart/Bad Cannstadt, Germany

One of the master drummers of the fusion scene, Alphonze Mouzon has cast the perfect crew for this 1976 venture. Miles Davis and McCoy Tyner alumni saxophonist Gary Bartz adds fire and depth; electric bassist Welton Gite, who played with Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, and Sister Sledge, takes care of the funk, and Keyboardist Stu Goldberg shows up with impeccable jazz credentials. Master Funk has the band dancing on the soulful side of the fusion bridge. Mouzon dedicates the next two pieces to his wife Linda. Baker’s Daughter begins with a wisp of serene enchantment before metamorphosing into an up-tempo samba feel on which everyone gets a taste. Come Into My Life reflects a romantic rock ballad with Bartz and Goldberg filling in the emotional blanks. On the frantic Nyctophobia Alphonse’s virtuoso drumming keeps the spirits of the night at bay. Mouzon’s thunderous assault on Virtue propels the soloists, while Poobli is a medium-groove fusion piece with a powerful Bartz solo. Drum Suite is all Mouzon, the four sections, Jazz-Rock Improvisation, Out of the Desert, Colors of Africa, and Total Swing are whirlwinds of rhythmic and instrumental diversity. A righteous album all-around.

Alphonse Mouzon - In Search of a Dream (1978/2014) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/88,2kHz

Artist: Alphonse Mouzon
Title: In Search of a Dream
Genre: Jazz, Fusion, Soul Jazz, Jazz Funk, Jazz Rock
Label: © MPS - Musik Produktion Schwarzwald | Edel Germany GmbH
Release Date: 1978/2014
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 88,2kHz/24bit
Duration: 40:07
Recorded: November 20-24, 1977 Zuckerfabrik Stuttgart, Germany

Before they recorded “Nothing but a Party”, his fellow musicians sang “Happy Birthday to You”; Alphonse Mouzon celebrated his 29th birthday during the November 1977 MPS session in Stuttgart, Germany. The American drummer is one of the originators of jazz-rock, the fusion of jazz and rock music; “Incest is best” was German rocker Udo Lindenberg’s comment on the coupling. No one had a better understanding of this melding of jazz polyrhythms with rock’s pulsating beat than Mouzon; with his furious propulsive style, he was welcome in both camps. Weather Report founders Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, and Miroslav Vitous brought him into the premier edition of the band. Mouzon and bassist Vitous made up the rhythm section. From Prague, Czech, Miroslav had also played in Miles Davis’ band. As he had already shown with Weather Report, he demonstrates how well he could integrate acoustic bass into a jazz-rock concept. In duo with Mouzon, Vitous bows the deep tones on his composition “The Light”; he grabs the electric bass on the other compositions. Vitous as well as saxophonist Bob Malik and keyboard player Stan Goldberg were all part of the 1977 version of Mouzon’s touring band. Pianist/keyboarder Joachim Kühn and guitarist Philip Catherine joined the troupe for the recording of “In Search of a Dream”. Thus, the session was a sort of summit meeting of the jazz-rock elite of that time.”

John Adams - Scheherazade 2 - Leila Josefowicz, St. Louis Symphony, David Robertson (2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Genre: Classical
Label: © Nonesuch Records Inc.
Release Date: 2016

Recorded: February 19 & 20, 2016, at Powell Hall, St. Louis, MO

Nonesuch Records releases John Adams's Scheherazade.2 on September 30, 2016. The 50-minute work, which the composer, borrowing a term from Berlioz, calls a "dramatic symphony," was written for the violinist Leila Josefowicz, who has played it with leading orchestras around the world since its 2015 premiere by the New York Philharmonic. The Nonesuch recording was made during February 2016 performances by the St. Louis Symphony led by Music Director David Robertson; Chester Englander is the cimbalom soloist. It is available to pre-order now on iTunes and in the Nonesuch Store, where CD orders include a download of the complete album available starting on release day. Adams and Josefowicz will perform Scheherazade.2 in Europe with the London Symphony, the Suisse Romande Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic this fall. You can watch the composer discuss the piece in a video below.
The composer was inspired by an exhibition at Paris's Institute du Monde Arabe that included the history and evolution of the "Arabian Nights" folk tales and was particularly struck by the story of Scheherazade. This led him to imagine a modern day Scheherazade, an "empowered, liberated spirit embodied in the multifaceted solo violin role." As he says in his liner note, "The casual brutality toward women that lies at the base of many of these tales prodded me to think about the many images of women oppressed or abused or violated that we see today in the news on a daily basis.
"Thinking about what a Scheherazade in our own time might be brought to mind some famous examples of women under threat for their lives, or women routinely attacked and even executed by religious fanatics in any number of countries," he continues. "The modern images that come to mind certainly aren't exclusive to the Middle East—we see examples, if not quite so graphic nonetheless profoundly disturbing, from everywhere in the world, including in our own country."
With this in mind, Adams created this dramatic symphony, with the solo violin portraying Scheherazade. "While not having an actual story line or plot, the symphony follows a set of provocative images: a beautiful young woman with grit and personal power; a pursuit by 'true believers;' a love scene that is both violent and tender; a scene in which she is tried by a court of religious zealots; and a final 'escape, flight, and sanctuary,'" he says. At the same time, notes the composer, "Scheherazade.2 is also a virtuoso romantic symphony-concerto on the grand scale which acknowledges its predecessors in works by Sibelius, Prokofiev, Bartók, and Berg.
The piece was composed specifically for Josefowicz, with whom Adams collaborated closely during its composition. The violinist, who is a passionate advocate of new music, has given numerous performances of Adams's works—notably his Violin Concerto; his electric violin concerto, The Dharma at Big Sur; and Road Movies, which she recorded for Nonesuch. "I find Leila a perfect embodiment of that kind of empowered strength and energy that a modern Scheherazade would possess," he says of his friend and colleague.
Josefowicz, a 2008 MacArthur fellow, frequently works with leading international composers, orchestras, and conductors. Violin concertos have been written especially for her by Esa-Pekka Salonen, Colin Matthews, and Steven Mackey. Recent highlights from Josefowicz's calendar include performances with the Chicago, Cincinnati, Baltimore, and Melbourne symphonies; Ottawa's National Arts Centre Orchestra; the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France; Gürzenich-Orchester Köln; Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich; Filarmonica della Scala, and the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester.
California–born David Robertson celebrates his 12th season as Music Director of the St. Louis (STL) Symphony, which was founded in 1880 and is the second-oldest orchestra in the U.S. During his tenure, Robertson has solidified the STL Symphony's standing as one of the nation's most vital and innovative ensembles. He is known as a champion of contemporary composers, as evidenced by the STL Symphony's strong association with John Adams. Robertson and the STL Symphony's last Nonesuch recording, of Adams's City Noir and Saxophone Concerto, won a 2014 Grammy Award. The label previously released their recording of his Doctor Atomic Symphony and Guide to Strange Places in 2009.

Wilco - Schmilco (2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Artist: Wilco
Title: Schmilco
Genre: Rock, Alternative/Indie Rock, Experimental Rock
Label: © dBpm Records, under exclusive license to Anti
Release Date: 2016
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit
Source: HDTracks
Duration: 00:36:29
Recorded: The Loft, Chicago

Wilco's 11th album, 2015's Star Wars, was a playful and angular set of noisy pop and pop-friendly noise, and it seemed fitting that it literally appeared out of nowhere, with the band sending it out as a free download without any advance warning one July afternoon. Little more than a year later, Wilco has released a follow-up, Schmilco, and in many respects this album is the flip side to Star Wars. Schmilco feels every bit as spontaneous as Star Wars (and much of the material was recorded during the same sessions), but where the earlier album seemed full of the joy of making music, this one is somber and low-key, a set of navel-gazing music even as the tunes confirm that Jeff Tweedy's way with a melody hasn't failed him. Acoustic guitars dominate most of Schmilco's 12 songs, with Tweedy's vocals right up front, sounding introspective and emphatic at once. On first listen, Schmilco plays like the work of one man and his guitar alone with his thoughts and his sorrows late one night. It takes a couple of spins for the contributions of the rest of the band to really sink in, but once they do, it becomes apparent this truly is a Wilco album, as Nels Cline's guitars, Pat Sansone and Mikael Jorgensen's keyboards, and Glenn Kotche's drums bring a rich spectrum of dynamics and texture to the songs, while John Stirratt's bass anchors these songs both melodically and rhythmically. Just as 1999's Summerteeth sounded like a smart pop album when observed casually but was an emotional horror show beneath the surface, Schmilco feels simple and declarative on first glance, but the deeper one is willing to dig, the more there is to find, both in terms of the band's interplay (which gets better and more intuitive with each album) and Tweedy's songs (which boast as much compassion and concern as brooding). Star Wars was Wilco's cheerfully bent version of a summer album; Schmilco is clearly music for autumn, meant for cool nights, crunching through the leaves, and the occasional dark night of the soul. And it speaks volumes about Wilco that they could make two albums so different within such a short space of time, and both times giving us music that sounds like no one else. --AllMusic Review by Mark Deming

Richard Wagner - Der Ring des Nibelungen - Berliner Philharmoniker, Herbert von Karajan (2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Recording Location: Jesus-Christus-Kirche, Berlin, Germany

Wagner interpretations with Herbert von Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker have a quality all of their own. Critics always admired the ability of the musicians to bring out not only Wagner’s luscious sound, but also all the subtleties of the score. Moreover, Karajan was able to rally the singers to successfully convey the lyrical tenderness of Wagner’s heroes despite their vocal powers.
Herbert von Karajan was one of the most highly regarded Wagner conductors of his age, celebrated for a lyrical, fiery and contrapuntally clear approach to the music which owed more to the example of conductors such as Toscanini and Clemens Krauss than it did to the old “German” school of Wagner conducting. Karajan once remarked: “When we did the Ring people said it was ‘chamber music’, but I would deny that. It was the full Wagner orchestra, with full sonority but played with real subtlety and the full range of dynamics.”
Karajan conducted four complete Ring cycles during his career: in Aachen in 1937, at the 1951 Bayreuth Festival, in Vienna in 1959, and at his own newly founded Salzburg Easter Festival between 1967 and 1970. In 1963 stage designer Günther Schneider-Siemssen had told him: “Salzburg has a great Wagner theatre the Grosses Festspielhaus. It is too big for Mozart but for Wagner it would be wonderful.” The orchestra engaged by Karajan was the Berliner Philharmoniker, the ensemble he considered best suited to the realisation of his musical vision.
