L'Amore per Elvira is the title La Serenissima have given this disc, referring to the fact that the three chamber cantatas it includes deal with the ups and downs of love for a lady of that name. Put together they tell a neat little story; the lover timidly declares his feelings; the lover must go on a journey and makes a tearful farewell; the lover returns for a joyous reunion. Each consists of a pair of recitatives and arias, and while the latter are full of the kind of striking and demanding vocal writing we have learnt to expect from Vivaldi, it is the opening recitatives which seem most determined to grab the attention. From the trembling trills at the start of Tremori al braccio or the slightly overwrought Elvira anima mia to the excitable Lungi del vago volto, each sets the mood for its ensuing cantata with memorable boldness and imagination.
Mhairi Lawson brings to them her characteristically bright and powerful tone and strong sense of drama. The three instrumental works which interleave with the cantatas on this disc Adrian Chandler presents with an engaging combination of keen-edged incisiveness and silky tone.
Amid the current welter of Vivaldi recordings, however, there is no doubt that with well programmed and performed releases such as this, La Serenissima are winning an important place for themselves. --Gramophone, January 2007

a cosmic rhythm with each stroke features pianist Viay Iyer and the musician he has described as his “hero, friend and teacher”, trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith. Vijay has previously played extensively with Wadada in Smith’s Golden Quartet, but the present album is the first documentation of their duo work, produced by Manfred Eicher at New York’s Avatar Studios in October 2015. The centre-piece of the album is the spellbinding title suite, dedicated to Nasreen Mohamedi (1937-1990), the innovative Indian artist whose improvisatory imagery evokes abstracted rhythms. Trumpet and piano interact here with creative sensitivity to tone, texture and space. Vijay Iyer and Wadada Leo Smith will be premiering a cosmic rhythm with each stroke at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in March 2016 in the context of a major exhibition dedicated to Nasreen Mohamedi’s art and writings. The “suite for Nasreen” is framed on the album by Iyer’s composition “Passage” and Smith’s concluding piece “Marian Anderson”, inspired by the great US contralto.

Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov (b. 1937) is an important contemporary voice in vocal music. In this new release Silvestrov's hauntingly beautiful vocal works are performed by the Latvian Radio Choir under their director Sigvards Kļava.
During his artistic career Silvestrov has explored a number of musical styles and techniques, such as avant-guard, post-modernism, neo-classicism, dodecaphony, aleatoric writing and pointillism. The fall of the Soviet Union, however, allowed Silvestrov to eventually compose spiritual works, inspired and influenced by his love of the Russian Orthodox Church music.
Silvestrov imbues with his own unique sound and bursts of surprising harmonic moves. Silvestrov's compositions are invested with the composer's own unique personality, musical sensibility and sense of beauty.
Latvian Radio Choir's previous releases on Ondine have been highly successful. For instance, the recording of Rachmaninov's All-Night Vigil (ODE 1206-5) was chosen as the Record of the Month, Editor's Choice and received a nomination in the Gramophone Awards in 2013.

After the quartet adventures of Currents and Post Scriptum, Wolfert Brederode returns to a piano trio setting, and Black Ice makes an apt metaphor for his new music, with its gleaming lyricism, transparency, and hint of danger. “I find the combination of danger and beauty intriguing”, he says. There is sleek melodic invention both from the leader and from Icelandic bassist Gulli Gudmundsson, and Jasper van Hulten proves to be a resourceful addition to the team, a tone-sensitive drummer adept at embellishing the sensitive musical language and sense of interplay.
Brederode and Gudmundsson have collaborated often over the years in contexts from free improvisation to theatre music and have a keenly honed intuitive understanding. They met in the 1990s when both were studying at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and, as Wolfert notes, “immediately had a strong musical connection.” Their creative compatibility first found expression in an earlier Brederode trio, which in turn evolved into a quintet co-led by Wolfert and drummer Eric Ineke. In 2006 Brederode joined Gudmundsson’s Binary Orchid trio, completed by trumpeter Arve Henriksen. And pianist and bassist have continued their association also inside the quartet of Dutch tenorist Yuri Honing.
In parallel, Brederode has developed his own music, documented on his critically- acclaimed ECM albums with his quartet with Claudio Puntin, Mats Eilertsen and Samuel Rohrer, and he has continued to make important contributions to the music of singer Susanne Abbuehl.

Right On is the tenth studio album release by R&B and soul singer Wilson Pickett released in 1970. The album is considered by many critics to be a valley in between the two peaks of the Hey Jude album in 1969 and the Gamble and Huff produced Wilson Pickett In Philadelphia album that came later in 1970. Hit covers of The Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On" (#16 R&B, #92 Pop) and The Archies' "Sugar Sugar" (#4 R&B, #25 Pop), as well as the Pickett original "She Said Yes" (#20 R&B, #68 Pop) came from these sessions. The album, however, had dismal sales. It stayed in the bottom parts of the Billboard 200. The backing band was Cold Grits; consisting of Billy Carter, Harold Cowart, Jimmy O'Rourke and Ron Ziegler; and the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section.
