This is clearly a treasure trove of forgotten opera arias . . . an accomplishment that seems near effortless. Blurring the traditional gender stereotype his androgynous tone adds invigorating and adventurous elements to these focused and impeccably controlled performances -- so full of life. There is a striking purity to the counter-tenor's dusky timbre together with a steadfast technique . . . The quality of each aria is consistently high and I have selected several highlights. Praiseworthy is Porpora's quick and exciting "Quel vasto, quel fiero" from "Polifemo". Cencic in decisive form as the heroic Ulysses demonstrates his aptitude for the technical challenges. In the title role the tender and affecting love song "Dal suo gentil sembiante" from Leo's "Demetrio" is an excellent example of Cencic's lovely smooth line with some modest ornamentation and a gloriously fluid glide to his high registers . . . There's a vivid presence to the sonics of this satisfyingly balanced and admirably presented recording. Lovers of Late-Baroque opera and the counter-tenor voice will be in their element. Those new to this repertoire need not hesitate. Max Emanuel Cencic is in magnificent form with these high quality, yet inexplicably forgotten, arias.

His full name is Diego Ramón Jiménez Salazar, but to contemporary flamenco fans he's known as Diego el Cigala, or "the Little Prawn." The famous flamenco singer José Monje Cruz gave him the nickname because of Diego's small size and the enormous passion that pours out of him (although, it is also a reference to Cruz's own nickname, "Camarón," which is Spanish for "shrimp"). Singing in flamenco enthusiast clubs in Madrid's Rastro district came first, and then Diego was hired to accompany many of flamenco's most famous dancers. With the guitarist Antón Jiménez backing him, Diego went "in front" -- flamenco slang for having your own career -- in 1994. A steady stream of hit albums made him famous in the flamenco community, while the 2004 release Lágrimas Negras with Cuban jazz pianist Bebo Valdés brought international acclaim, with both The New York Times and BBC Radio fawning over it. Two years later, his Sony BMG release Picasso en Mis Ojos would win the 2006 Latin Grammy for Best Flamenco Album. --Artist Biography by David Jeffries

Manuel de la Calva and Ramón Arcusa met while working in an aviation company. After singing together at a Christmas party, these young music lovers decided to pursue a career naming their act Duo Dinamico. They started with a live performance at a local radio station and recording an EP for the first time in 1959, featuring "Little Darling," "Alone," "Cowboy," and "Recordandote." Soon, Duo Dinamico was performing along with Luis Mariano, Lucho Gatica, even the Platters, and getting main roles in movies such as Boton De Ancla and Buscame A Esa Chica. The pair wrote "La, la, la", the song that won the 1968 Eurovision Song Contest, performed by Massiel, while in 1972, after recording in London with producer George Martin, Ramón Arcusa and Manuel de la Calva decided to concentrate themselves in producing new acts, in addition, composing for prominent Latin artists. In 1986 Sony Music signed them up, releasing a self-titled album, followed by En Forma, featuring "Resistiré," which was chosen by Pedro Almodóvar as a main title for the movie soundtrack of Atame. Dúo Dinámico continued to perform in the years to come and in 2007 Quisiera Ser -- a musical featuring 24 of their hits -- began a run at the Teatro Nuevo Apolo in Madrid. --Artist Biography by Drago Bonacich

Recorded live October 2010 at Stevenson Hall, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland by Mark McKellen; Edited and mixed at Rainbow Studio, Oslo, September 2011 by Jan Erik Kongshaug, Arild Andersen, Tommy Smith, and Manfred Eicher

Bassist Arild Andersen shines as the principal soloist in a celebration of music from ECM with specially-commissioned new big-band arrangements of well-known pieces by Dave Holland, Chick Corea, Trygve Seim, Jan Garbarek, and Keith Jarrett. The resourceful Tommy Smith adds powerful tenor solos, arranges Garbarek’s “Molde Canticle”, and directs the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra. Andersen’s composition “Independency” is a 16-minute highlight, in a sensitive and powerful arrangement by Mike Gibbs. Other contributing arrangers are Makoto Ozone, Christian Jacob, Geoff Keezer and Trygve Seim/Øyvind Bræke: all of them contribute sterling work, and their arrangements are likely to enter modern jazz’s big band repertory book. Recorded live at Glasgow’s Royal Conservatoire, “Celebration” is a highly attractive album for a broad listenership, and as a statement about music introduced by ECM will be of special interest to long-time followers of the label.

Arild Andersen, Tommy Smith, Paolo Vinaccia - Mira (2013) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Recorded: December 2012 at Rainbow Studio, Oslo

After the eruptive excitement of their Live At Belleville album, which was widely praised around the world (and secured for leader Arild Andersen the Prix du Musicien Européen 2008 from the Academie du Jazz in France), the trio now delivers a studio album. In Oslo’s Rainbow, bassist Andersen, tenorist Tommy Smith and Paolo Vinaccia rechanneled their music’s energies into a programme of soulful ballads and mid-tempo free-floating sound explorations. The pairing of Anderson’s muscular bass and Smith’s vaulting tenor is exceptionally compelling (as the recent Celebration album also confirmed). Most of the tunes on Mira are from Arild’s pen, though his cohorts also contribute material, and there is an unexpected interpretation of Burt Bacharach’s Alfie, beautifully played by Tommy Smith here.

Charles Mingus’ 1959 Columbia sessions were both a summation of his diverse work up to that point and a bold step forward, for it was the year when at last he had the opportunity to sign with a major label and work with an old friend and musical collaborator, Teo Macero at Columbia Records.
There was no stopping this incredible musical mind who’d found his voice as a bassist, composer and bandleader. The bands that Mingus assembled at Columbia’s 30th Street studio in May and November of ‘59 consisted of the greatest exponents of his music to date, featuring sidemen Jimmy Knepper, John Handy, Booker Ervin, Horace Parlan and Dannie Richmond.
These 1959 sessions, which resulted in Mingus Ah Um and Mingus Dynasty, introduced several classics that would become evergreens in the bassist’s repertoire and jazz standards including: “Better Git It In Your Soul,” “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” and “Fables Of Faubus” plus homages to jazz greats Ellington (“Open Letter To Duke”), with whom Mingus is most frequently compared for the vastness, depth and diversity of his recordings, and Morton (“Jelly Roll”), jazz’s first great composer.

Aretha Franklin has simply been one of the greatest singers of the modern generation, and whether bringing her powerful, passionate voice to bear on gospel standards, songs from the Great American Songbook, jazz standards, pop ditties, or deep Southern soul and R&B, she has always had the presence -- much like Ray Charles -- to make anything she touches unmistakably hers. Franklin began her career in gospel when she was still a teenager, and her amazing vocal talents, coupled with her fine piano playing, marked her as a once-in-a-lifetime kind of artist, qualities very apparent to legendary talent scout John Hammond, who signed her to Columbia Records. The problem Hammond and Columbia immediately ran into, though, was how to best present that spirited voice to the secular pop world. Between 1960 and 1969 (her first release for the label was actually in 1961), Columbia tried Franklin in a variety of styles and settings, and if none of them exactly caught fire the way her legendary later sides for Atlantic Records would, they still allowed Franklin to explore a lot of avenues, and she was too good a singer not to be at least memorable in all of them. This wonderful box set includes CDs of Franklin's seven full-length albums for the label, two CDs of her work with producers Bobby Scott (in 1963) and Clyde Otis (in 1964), a CD of singles produced by Bob Johnston, plus rarities that were sweetened and released after Franklin left Columbia for Atlantic and a DVD featuring Franklin performing several songs at the piano on The Steve Allen Show in 1964. It’s a tremendous set, and it portrays an artist working her own way toward how to best present herself to the world. We all know she got there. --AllMusic Review by Steve Leggett (Take a Look: Aretha Franklin Complete on Columbia)
