Aretha Franklin has simply been one of the greatest singers of the modern generation, and whether bringing her powerful, passionate voice to bear on gospel standards, songs from the Great American Songbook, jazz standards, pop ditties, or deep Southern soul and R&B, she has always had the presence -- much like Ray Charles -- to make anything she touches unmistakably hers. Franklin began her career in gospel when she was still a teenager, and her amazing vocal talents, coupled with her fine piano playing, marked her as a once-in-a-lifetime kind of artist, qualities very apparent to legendary talent scout John Hammond, who signed her to Columbia Records. The problem Hammond and Columbia immediately ran into, though, was how to best present that spirited voice to the secular pop world. Between 1960 and 1969 (her first release for the label was actually in 1961), Columbia tried Franklin in a variety of styles and settings, and if none of them exactly caught fire the way her legendary later sides for Atlantic Records would, they still allowed Franklin to explore a lot of avenues, and she was too good a singer not to be at least memorable in all of them. This wonderful box set includes CDs of Franklin's seven full-length albums for the label, two CDs of her work with producers Bobby Scott (in 1963) and Clyde Otis (in 1964), a CD of singles produced by Bob Johnston, plus rarities that were sweetened and released after Franklin left Columbia for Atlantic and a DVD featuring Franklin performing several songs at the piano on The Steve Allen Show in 1964. It’s a tremendous set, and it portrays an artist working her own way toward how to best present herself to the world. We all know she got there. --AllMusic Review by Steve Leggett (Take a Look: Aretha Franklin Complete on Columbia)

The Karajan Official Remastered Edition comprises 13 box sets containing official remasterings of the finest recordings the Austrian conductor made for EMI between 1946 and 1984, and which are now a jewel of the Warner Classics catalogue.
For many, Herbert von Karajan (1908-1989) – hailed early in his career as ‘Das Wunder Karajan’ (The Karajan Miracle) and known in the early 1960s as ‘the music director of Europe’ – remains the ultimate embodiment of the maestro. The release of the Karajan Official Remastered Edition over the first half of 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the conductor’s death in July 1989 at the age of 81.
He was closely associated with EMI for the majority of his recording career (specifically from 1946 to 1960 and then again from 1969 to 1984). EMI’s legendary producer Walter Legge sought him out in Vienna just after World War II and the long relationship that ensued embraced recordings with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Philharmonia (the orchestra founded by Legge), the Berlin Philharmonic (of which Karajan became ‘conductor for life’ in 1955), the forces of La Scala, Milan, and the Orchestre de Paris.
The Karajan Official Remastered Edition will feature primarily symphonic and choral music. The entire edition will comprise recordings remastered from the original sources in 24-bit/96kHz at Abbey Road Studios, the world’s most renowned recording studio.

The Alliage Quintet has a gift for surprising its audiences by toying with the illusion of a symphony orchestra. The ensemble is like a storyteller regaling its audience with its own version of a traditional narrative.
For 'Fantasia', the players joined forces with Sabine Meyer to explore the imaginative world of works by Borodin, Stravinsky, Dukas, Bernstein and Shostakovich – works that are all based on famous fairytales, narratives and stories, e.g. Goethe's Sorcerer's Apprentice, Voltaire's much-travelled Candide or the Russian folklore Firebird.
Unique in its line-up, the Alliage Quintet, two-time winner of the 'Echo Klassik' award, creates the illusion of listening to a big orchestra. The ensemble is led on the soprano sax by its founder Daniel Gauthier, and he has several of today's best classical saxophone soloists at his side: Magdalena Lapaj (Poland) plays the alto, Asya Fateyeva (Ukraine) the tenor sax, and Sebastian Pottmeier (Germany) the baritone. Korean pianist Jang Eun Bae completes the ensemble.
The Alliage Quintet has made guest appearances in many of Europe's major concert halls, in Asia and North America, and also at well-known festivals such as the Rheingau Music Festival and the Lucerne Festival. In addition to many radio and TV appearances, e.g. on 'ARTE Lounge', the Quintet has released a total of five CD's with works by Mendelssohn, Schumann, Mozart, Rossini and Puccini specially arranged for them.

Ernest Ranglin - Ranglypso (1976/2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/88,2kHz

Artist: Ernest Ranglin
Title: Ranglypso

Release Date: 1976/2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 88,2kHz/24bit

Recorded: October 25, 1974, MPS Studio, Villingen

Jamaican guitarist Ernest Ranglin’s work with reggae legends Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff and long association with internationally acclaimed Jamaican jazz pianist Monty Alexander (check out Monty’s classic reggae-saturated MPS outing, Rass), ranks Ranglin among the major figures in West Indian music. One of the founding fathers of ska, Ranglin’s jazz credentials were permanently established when in 1964 London’s iconic Ronnie Scott’s Jazzclub hired him as their house guitarist. On Ranglypso Alexander takes on the role of sideman alongside renowned German bassist Eberhard Weber and English drummer Kenny Clare. The mento in Ranglin’s Mento-Time in Jamaica refers to the Jamaican folk music that heavily influenced reggae and ska. The Roberta Flack hit Feel Like Makin’ Love maintains its original soulful sound, while the medium-up Escape to Villingen is a bluesy tip of the hat to MPS. Ranglin and band blaze through the classic Brazilian choro standard, Tico Tico, Ranglypso celebrates calypso’s up-beat joy, and the Stylistics hit You Make Me Feel Brand New retains its gorgeous ballad feel. The R&B hit Honky Tonk plays as a straight-ahead shuffle with classy blues solos, and the album’s last piece is a rocking ride down the modal Freeway. Sumptuous jazz and soul marinated in the melodic-rhythmic juices of the Caribbean.

Eddie Louiss, John Surman, Daniel Humair - Our Kind Of Sabi (1970/2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/88,2kHz

Artist: Eddie Louiss, John Surman, Daniel Humair
Title: Our Kind Of Sabi
Genre: Jazz, Contemporary Jazz, Free Improvisation
Label: © MPS - Musik Produktion Schwarzwald | Edel Germany GmbH
Release Date: 1970/2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 88,2kHz/24bit

Recorded: August 27, 28 and 29, 1970 At Nippon Columbia Studio Akasaka, Tokyo

The brilliant French Hammond organist and pianist Eddy Louiss worked with the likes of Kenny Clarke, Jean-Luc Ponty, and Stan Getz; reed player John Surman and drummer Daniel Humair have long been major forces on the European scene. Louiss also recorded the title piece on Stan Getz’s “Dynasty” album – here the trio presents a wilder version with fiery solos from Surman’s baritone and Louiss on Hammond. This trio likes their Sabi hot with a Spanish tinge. On the Martinique folk song Zafe Ko Ida, the great Norwegian bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson joins Louiss on Marimba and Humair on drums, keeping with the tradition of the Caribbean before Eddy switches to piano and the three transform the sound of the islands into swinging jazz. Song For Martine brings Surman back on soprano and Louiss once again sitting behind the Hammond with a plaintive balladic feel before moving into an Afro-Latin groove that underpins passionate solos. On Humair’s Out Of The Sorcellery Louiss pedals the Latinesque two-beat bass line on Hammond as he and Humair conjure their magical interplay. A classy trio album with Louiss’ superb Hammond organ play front and center and a glimmering of the Caribbean dancing in the shadows.
