The Penitential Psalms, a key work in the artistic itinerary of Alfred Schnittke, was premiered in Moscow in 1988. This masterpiece of exceptional density and rigour, at once contemporary and timeless, is performed here from the composer’s autograph manuscript, which includes significant divergences from the published edition.
The Penitential Psalms for mixed choir a cappella, which stylistically might be seen as a substrate of the Concerto for Choir he had composed three years previously on texts from the Book of Lamentations by the medieval Armenian mystic Gregory of Narek, were written in 1988 to commemorate the millennium of the Christianisation of Russia, which commenced with the baptism of Grand Prince Vladimir in what was then Kievan Rus’. On this occasion the literary source of the work was a selection of poems for Lent from the pen of one or more anonymous monks, which Schnittke had discovered in an anthology of Old Russian texts from the second half of the sixteenth century, published in Moscow in 1986.
The key to understanding the entire cycle is contained in the sixth verse of the work. This deals with the fundamental motif of original sin and refers to the story of the treacherous murder of Vladimir’s sons Boris and Gleb, later canonised and revered as martyrs, which their older half-brother Svyatopolk perpetrated in 1015 in the course of bloody conflicts over the succession. The remaining pieces are entwined around this central section, like a band of mourning crape, a wreath of prayer-like paraliturgical verses of the kind that had their heyday in the reign of Ivan the Terrible. Bitter lines concerning past wrongs and human sinfulness, which are marked by sorrow, lamentation, the willingness to repent and the hope of forgiveness.
The Three Sacred Hymns, which follow the Psalms, are rooted in a musical tradition closer to Russian Romanticism. The first is a bichoral Hail, Mary, which derives its concentrated inwardness from the strict antiphonal dialogue between the two choirs. The ensuing prayer to Jesus begins softly in unison, suddenly rising to an emphatic eight-part fortissimo, releasing energies that seem still to resonate in the concluding Our Father, in which Schnittke pushes the terrain of the tonal area of E flat to its limits in constantly varied vocal combinations. In comparsion with the Penitential Psalms, the Three Sacred Hymns are unquestionably more strongly rooted in the Romantic tradition of Russian sacred music, as it can be traced from the Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff settings of the All-Night Vigil to Stravinsky’s Ave Maria and Pater Noster. But even these miniatures, in a way typical of this important ambassador of a non-dogmatic modernity who alas fell silent far too early, show the significance of the old in the new and the new in the old alike. -- Roman Hinke

Inspired by Paul Simon’s contributions, Alexis Cole offers this very special treatment of his music. With Dazzling Blue, vocalist Cole and producers David Chesky and Nicholas Prout sifted through some of Simon’s lesser known compositions. Herein they are presented in unalloyed simplicity, emphasizing the incandescent quality, and unadorned beauty of his lyrics.
Ms. Cole has a marvelous voice of great depth. Her clear, warm resonance strips away all ornamentation and gets you to the marrow of the songwriter’s stories. The vocals are haunting, and a testament to Cole's cross-cultural vocal training. Cole is joined by an excellent group of musicians whose collective body of work is well known to roots music aficionados. Jeff Haynes and Gus Courtsunis on percussion; Marvin Sewell on acoustic and electric guitars; Mark Peterson on bass, Julie Harris on Native American flute, and background vocals from Maria Quintanilla and Evan Sundquist; they are all an integral part of the whole.

Gould as an “incorrigible romantic.” Instead of Schumann, Chopin, or Liszt he selected two unimaginably obscure rarities, referring to Grieg as a personal ancestor (“the composer was a cousin of my maternal great-grandfather”) and to Bizet’s Variations chromatiques as “one of the very few masterpieces for solo piano to emerge from the third quarter of the nineteenth century.”

Glauco Venier - Miniatures: Music For Piano And Percussion (2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Artist: Glauco Venier

Release Date: 2016
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit

Duration: 00:54:51
Recorded: December 2013 Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI, Lugano

For Friulian pianist Glauco Venier, Miniatures – his first solo album for ECM - is a kind of journal or diary, atmospherically reflecting upon early memories, early experiences of music, and in turn casting its own quiet spell:
“I grew up in a very small village in northern Italy, and I’m still living there. The Adriatic Sea is nearby, then rivers, lakes, hills. There’s a lot of silence.” There were no brass bands, he explains, in Gradisca di Sedegliano. “My approach to music, when I first discovered it, was through the organ in the local church. And I fell in love with that sound, and with the composers of music for the organ…I have memories, good memories, of playing the organ in the church, in the dark, through the cold winters.” He went on to study organ at the conservatory of Udine, immersing himself in the world of the Italian Renaissance and baroque composers and then working onward through the history of music for organ, concluding his studies with the works of Olivier Messiaen. Before jazz became the focus of his life, he emphasizes, there was church music. “And I think you can hear that in this recording, even if I’m playing modern chords or improvising, in the approach and the feeling, an influence from older music is there.”

Garbage - Strange Little Birds (2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Artist: Garbage
Title: Strange Little Birds
Genre: Pop Rock, Dance Rock, Alternative/Indie Rock
Label: © Stunvolume Records
Release Date: 2016
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit

Duration: 52:47
Recorded: 2013–15, Grunge Is Dead; Red Razor Sounds, Los Angeles, United States

Garbage made their comeback in 2012, returning to action after a seven-year hiatus with Not Your Kind of People. Strange Little Birds arrived four years later -- a gap that's just over half the length of their hiatus -- and it plays as a continuation of its predecessor, a record that draws a conscious bridge to the band's '90s heyday. If Garbage are no longer opting in with new trends, they're also not grasping at elusive straws from the past: Strange Little Birds is a comfortable record, an album from a band that embraces its signatures and limitations. As they're a group of studio musicians, Garbage still thrill with the possibilities of recording, loading each track with all manner of trickery -- showiness that envelops, not alienates. Part of the pleasure of listening to Garbage is how their form is their substance: it's about lush, dark waves of sounds as much as it is pop hooks. Shirley Manson may tackle risky sociological or personal issues in her lyrics, but how she sings is paramount, how her voice alternately soars above and is subsumed by the washes of treated guitars. Strange Little Birds showcases this narcotic pull so well because it doesn't push at the edges of the band's sound: it embraces this ebb and flow. Such modesty doesn't mean Garbage settle for the expected -- they can achieve a sultry slow burn on "If I Lost You" -- but the impressive thing about Strange Little Birds is how it feels simultaneously familiar and fresh, a record that echoes the past without being trapped by it. --AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"Subtitled 'The Essential Elvis Volume 2,' and dating from 1989, this set contains 20 tracks that range from gospel to rock 'n' roll, astonishing stereo takes that were supposed to have been erased or discarded. As luck would have it, they were saved. The resultant versions of what is otherwise absurdly familiar material will leave you breathless (provided you're an Elvis fan — and shame on you if you're not). Thanks to a studio chat, this is glimpse of the past you never expected to share: true stereo, as good as it gets, from a time when mono still ruled. The mono bonus tracks are dandy, too." — Sound Quality: 92% - Ken Kessler, Hi Fi News, November 2013
