Lissie - My Wild West (2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/44,1kHz

Artist: Lissie
Title: My Wild West
Genre: Pop Rock, Folk, Singer/Songwriter, Alternative/Indie Rock, Americana
Label: © Cooking Vinyl
Release Date: 2016
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 44,1kHz/24bit
Source: Qobuz
Duration: 00:42:55

The possessive in the title of Lissie's third album is telling: no matter how often this echoes the slow, narcotic sway of Lana Del Rey, this California is conjured by Illinois native Lissie, an adult-alternative singer/songwriter who has slowly crept away from the folk roots she displayed on her 2010 debut, Catching a Tiger. Back then, she was bright and earnest and also bold, her burnished vocals had the grit in the gloss, a combination that amounted to a U.K. hit and set the stage for 2013's Back to Forever. With the help of producer Jacknife Lee, Lissie embraced a crossover that never came, so the moodiness of 2016's My Wild West reads as something of a retreat: she didn't harness the stars, so she's turning inward. At first, My Wild West feels as if Lissie is borrowing too many clothes from Lana Del Rey, choosing to write about the sad sunsets and tarnished dreams of Hollywood, a borrowing that seems blatant only with the blessing of distance. As the record plays, the melancholy tides of Lissie's tunes are quite alluring, a testament to her sense of craft, a gift that bears a double edge. She's savvy enough to recognize the prevailing pop trends -- it's not a bad idea to surf in LDR's wake -- and she's sharp enough to make it not seem like she's crassly co-opting a craze. As good as these moody moments are, My Wild West is best once the darkness settles, and Lissie offers nicely sculpted miniatures that feel alternately comforting and bruised, with the human touches Lana Del Rey works so hard to remove from her own music. --AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Kenny Burrell - Midnight Blue (1963/2012) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

Artist: Kenny Burrell
Title: Midnight Blue
Genre: Jazz, Hard Bop, Guitar Jazz
Label: © Blue Note Records
Release Date: 1963(BLP 4123/BST 84123)/2012
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 192kHz/24bit
Source: HDTracks
Duration: 00:35:45
Recorded: Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, January 8, 1963

Kenny Burrell has led over 100 albums in his long career and is the epitome of good taste and melodic swing, never playing a phrase that would be considered out-of-place or unworthy. He first recorded in 1951 with Dizzy Gillespie and was a major part of the Detroit jazz scene before emerging in New York in 1956. Burrell was one of the very first guitarists to be showcased in a pianoless trio, and when he was signed to Blue Note, he became one of the most influential guitarists in jazz.
However to hear Burrell at his most soulful and bluesy, one has to find recordings where he is teamed with a particularly inspiring stylist. 1963’s Midnight Blue is considered one of the most exciting recordings of his long career. It was a magical occasion that teamed Burrell with the passionate tenor-saxophonist Stanley Turrentine in a pianoless quintet that also includes Ray Barretto on congas. With Turrentine (who is immediately recognizable within two sounds) infusing each note with an excess of soul and Barretto giving the blues-oriented music a Latin tinge, Burrell raises the heat and is heard at his most exhilarating and extroverted.
His soulful playing on such songs as “Chitlins Con Carne,” “Saturday Night Blues” and “Gee Baby Ain’t I Good To You” is so greasy and emotional that it reminds one that both B.B. King and Duke Ellington often cited Kenny Burrell as their favorite guitarist. While Burrell has recorded scores of albums since this time, Midnight Blue cannot be topped and will always be one of the key recordings that he will be remembered for. This superbly recorded classic needs to be in every jazz collection!

Recorded: Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, September 14, 1962; #8 - August 15, 1963
Remastered: 2008, Rudy Van Gelder at Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ

Kenny Burrell performs with Coleman Hawkins and his rhythm section. Burrell is in optimum form on all the numbers and in their varied expressions. The leading neo-bop guitarist, he is capable of a far reaching range of expression. His chords can be as lush as, say Johnny Smith’s can, but his lines are always rhythmically spirited by a very powerful jazz energy and blues-in-formed charge that I think no contemporary guitarist can equal.

Recorded in one day (August 23, 1957) at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in Hackensack, NJ. This date of ballads and burners features the young tenor saxophonist John Coltrane leading a quartet comprised of pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Arthur Taylor.
Liner notewriter (original and reissue) Ira Gitler remarks, “In the ‘50s I was called upon to name many of the untitled songs at Prestige. Traneing In came to me because of the way [Coltrane] homed in after Garland’s opening solo [on the song].” This album is significant in that it took place halfway through Coltrane’s break with Miles Davis’ classic quintet of the ‘50s and it was the same year that the tenor saxophonist hooked up with Thelonious Monk to record the recently discovered live Carnegie Hall masterpiece.

It's hard to believe after hearing the eloquence of "Then I'll Be Tired of You" or the title track, but John Coltrane's ballad mastery was the last of his skills to receive wide appreciation. The notion that Coltrane the balladeer was as commanding as Coltrane the uptempo wizard or Coltrane the blues player finally gained acceptance in the early 60s, when this album first appeared and quickly became an important exhibit in the reconsideration.
The extended performances boast additional delights, including Paul Chambers's arco bass on "Stardust," Red Garland's well-paced choruses on "Time After Time," some of Wilbur Harden's best trumpet work on "Love Thy Neighbor," and Freddie Hubbard's earliest on "Then I'll Be Tired of You"; they were recorded at Coltrane's final two sessions for Prestige.

John Coltrane - Settin' The Pace (1961/2014) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/44,1kHz

Artist: John Coltrane

Release Date: 1961/2014
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC 2.0 Mono 44,1kHz/24bit

Duration: 52:46
Recorded: March 26th, 1958 at Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, NJ
Remastered: 2007, Rudy Van Gelder at Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ

Jazz saxophonist John Coltrane's album Settin' The Pacewas originally released in 1961. Coltrane had recorded some unissued recordings while under the label Prestige, after his fame grew and he was no longer with the label they used these recordings and released albums without Coltrane's approval. This was one such album. The decision to release this album now is to a certain extent determined by economic considerations, but it also happens to throw light on certain aspects of the jazz business which warrant discussion. Had the album been released at the time it was recorded it would have reached the small nucleus of Coltrane followers then active, and of the rest been largely ignored.
One aspect of Coltrane’s work, apparent here, is just beginning to be noticed. He is one of our most lyrical musicians, but it is not a standard form of lyricism—it does not gush and does not cloy—and that quality went unnoticed for a long time when the discussions of his work were primarily concerned with the technical innovations he was making. Settin' The Pace features popular song "I See Your Face Before Me", composed by Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz.

Here is one of the musical giants of the 20th century, poised on the precipice of greatness. Between the spring of 1957 and the winter of 1958, during which time Lush Life was recorded, the music of tenor saxophonist John Coltrane (1926-1967) was developing in giant steps, thanks in great part to a six-month 1957 stint with Thelonious Monk that had much to do with sharpening Coltrane’s harmonic conception and torrential attack.
Lush Life contains Coltrane’s first recordings as sole leader, his initial date fronting a pianoless trio, and one of his first extended readings of a ballad, Billy Strayhorn’s resplendent title track. We also hear him at the helm of a quartet and quintet, featuring pianist Red Garland, with trumpeter Donald Byrd added to “Lush Life.” Coltrane and jazz would never be the same.
