This is a really great Christmas album by Emilie-Claire Barlow and if you like Diana Krall and similar female jazz vocalists, you'll probably really enjoy this. Emilie-Claire’s vocal performance on here along with her arrangements, conducting the strings as well as producing the album herself is amazing. The orchestral style backing in some songs only helps make this recording even better rather than just a straight jazz album, bringing in that old „crooner“ sound that accompanied many Christmas recordings back in the 1950's/1960's. But make no mistake, this is a „jazz“ Christmas album overall.

Daniel Barenboim continues his acclaimed Elgar series with the landmark First Symphony. These new issues mark the first time that indefatigable maestro Barenboim has returned to recording Elgar’s symphonic works since the 1970s.
This recording is the latest step in maestro Barenboim’s Elgarian journey with the Berlin Staatskapelle, following on from well-received performances of Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius, the Cello Concerto (recorded live with Alisa Weilerstein for Decca), and Elgar’s Second Symphony – about which the Guardian wrote: “The surging, unquenchable energy of this account is obvious from the opening bars, which are borne on an irresistible flood of sound from the Berlin Staatskapelle…”
This album was recorded live at Berlin’s renowned Philharmonie, with the Berlin Staatskapelle and leading Elgarian record producer Andrew Keener.
Barenboim is a passionate Elgarian, counting The Dream of Gerontius as one of his favourite works. As a young man he worked regularly with Sir John Barbirolli, one of the greatest of all Elgar conductors and who was Jacqueline du Pré’s partner in the classic EMI recording of the Cello Concerto.
Barenboim’s latest Decca release follows his hugely successful Beethoven project of 2012, 2013’s Verdi Requiem, and Elgar’s Second Symphony in 2014.

Since the Swing Era, when Harlem was a real hotbed of jazz, there has been present a certain kind of music, a type of popular jazz compounded from the large swing bands, the “jump” bands, and the fly, little combos which formed the best of what later became known as rhythm and blues. The best of rhythm and blues, however, has always been within the mainstream of jazz and is a happy, swinging, bluesy kind of music which contains both humor and warmth. Eddie Davis' group was among those who revolutioned the idea of unconventional jazz instrumental combos.
Jazz tenor saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis' album featuring organist Shirley Scott and flautist Jerome Richardson. The Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis Cookbook was originally recorded in 1958 and later added on two subsequent volumes. Davis was known for developing the organ/tenor format, recording with Scott on numerous occasions and creating a unique musical blend between the two instruments.

When four veterans like Coleman Hawkins, Buddy Tate, Eddie Davis, and Arnett Cobb get together, no longer young bucks that have to prove themselves, they still like to assert their musical masculinity. It is like four old friends in their shirtsleeves or T-shirts, having an old fashioned bull session over beer and pretzels or an equivalent. There is talk of old times, back-slapping, head-shaking, low humor and high hilarity. Troubles of the present are forgotten temporarily as old bonds are reweaved.
The supporting cast for the tenormen is a solid one. Organist Shirley Scott is one of the real solid swingers. Edgehill and Duvivier form one of the most complementary rhythm sections around; their work on The Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis Cookbook and the two Shirley Scott trio LPs were proof enough of that. George, in addition, has penned some simple but effective lines for the boys to get off on. Two are in collaboration with “Lock” while one is on his own. Scottie also has one written contribution while the fifth number salutes the late President, Lester Young, with his own composition. This is no cutting contest. It is four tenormen showing each other (and their audience) what they can do; four wild horses let out of the corral really kicking up heir heels.
