Critical acclaim for Jonathan Plowright's two previous discs in his series of Brahms’s works for solo piano includes distinctions such as ‘10/10’ on the website Classics Today and top marks in Diapason as well as ‘Instrumental Choice of the Month’ in BBC Music Magazine. On his third disc Plowright presents the listener with two seemingly contradictory aspects of Johannes Brahms: the deeply serious, emotionally charged, but also meticulously constructed late Piano Pieces of Op. 118 and their precursor Op. 76 appear side by side with the unapologetic extroversion and scintillating verve of most (if not all) of the 16 Waltzes Op. 39, and the flamboyant Variations on a Hungarian Melody. Brahms’s fascination with Hungarian gypsy music stemmed from his friendship with the violinist Eduard Reményi, and found an outlet in several works, among which the Hungarian Dances are probably the most famous. The composer was also a friend and admirer of Johann Strauss II, and in his Op. 39 trespassed – with great success – into the domains of Vienna's 'Waltz King'. It is tempting to think that Brahms early experience as a pianist in taverns and restaurants induced him to compose this sophisticated light music, but there were also commercial reasons: he composed the waltzes for piano four hands and subsequently made no less than two arrangements for solo piano of the entire set.

A renewal of forms, Too innovative for its time, Brahms’s Piano Concerto no.1, premiered in Hanover in 1859, needed a few years to become established in the repertory. It is a work that redefines the norms of the genre. The traditional confrontation between virtuoso soloist and orchestra is bypassed in favour of a balanced treatment and a more ‘symphonic’ approach. The Ballades op.10 too derive from the impetus towards a renewal of forms characteristic of the young Brahms’s output.

Black Stone Cherry - Kentucky (2016) {Deluxe Edition} High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

They say you can't go home again, but Black Stone Cherry proves otherwise on Kentucky. The hard-rocking Bluegrass State quartet recorded its fifth album, and follow-up to 2014's Magic Mountain, at Barrick Recording in Glasgow, KY, where it recorded its 2006 debut album. The 13 tracks find BSC connecting with that same youthful energy (check out "Shakin' My Cage," "Soul Machine" or "Rescue Me") but demonstrates the wisdom gleaned from nearly a decade of recording and touring on tracks such as the reflective "Long Ride" and a brassy (and timely) take on Edwin Starr's Motown classic "War."

Bill Evans - Some Other Time: The Lost Session From The Black Forest (1968/2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

Duration: 01:33:40
Recorded: MPS Studios in Villingen, Germany, June 20, 1968

This double album includes 93 minutes of never before heard captivating studio recordings by pianist Bill Evans in solo, duo and trio settings and is only the second release —(and the only studio album) to feature the short-lived Bill Evans Trio with drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist Eddie Gomez. Recently unearthed, these tracks were taken from a session in June 1968, only five days after the trio's triumphant performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Recorded by Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer (HGBS) and Joachim-Ernst Brendt in Germany, these songs were originally intended for the legendary MPS label but for some reason were never released. It’s a remarkable document of an under-represented period in the career of one of the icons of jazz.

At the end of the Thirty Years War, the support of the Viennese Imperial Court allowed the emergence of an extraordinarily talented generation of musicians speaking with virtuosity, humour and depth. Schmelzer, Biber and Kerll were at the forefront. For Carnival festivities where music has pride of place they regale us with earthy works that mimic the sounds of nature and everyday life. They also had to meet the taste of Emperor Leopold I, who particularly appreciated imitative counterpoint, and for whom they composed these sonatas which have the power to elevate the soul and spirit.

Classical pianist Son Yeol-eum has returned to the limelight with her first album in eight years, “Modern Times.” It features a wide range of music from jazzy razzmatazz swing tunes to sounds that remind listeners of a dark and desolate night.
“This musical theme is something I have always wanted to pursue because I think this style of music represents such important and influential times in our history,” said Son, during a press conference held at the Stradeum concert hall in Seoul on Wednesday.
“All of the music selected from the album are from the early 20th century, an era in which I think saw a big shift in both world history and music culture,” she added.

Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals - Call It What It Is (2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/44,1kHz

It took Ben Harper nine years to reconvene the Innocent Criminals for 2016's Call It What It Is, but that's not necessarily an abnormally long time for this crew: eight years separated its 2007 predecessor Lifeline from their 2009 debut, Burn to Shine. Harper formed the Innocent Criminals partially with the intention that they'd be his Band of Gypsies, a support system for him to indulge in his Jimi Hendrix daydreams, but they wound up being an even better outlet for his soulful side. Despite "Pink Balloon" and the ham-fisted opener "When Sex Was Dirty" -- bluesy bluster that pulls this closer to Lenny Kravitz than Hendrix -- Call It What It Is is largely devoted to this blissed-out, mellow vibe. Part hippie blues and part Impressions, with just a dose of sunsplash reggae, this is an album for chilling at sunset. Harper may attempt grand statements -- when he's wishing for a time when sex was dirty, it's not a carnal yearning; he associates it with a time when the air was also clean -- but what matters on Call It What It Is isn't what he's saying, but how he's saying it. And that's where the Innocent Criminals come into play. The group gives Harper's tunes warmth and elasticity, opening them up with ease and letting them breathe. When he's backed by the Innocent Criminals, Harper never seems to be trying too hard, and that's why Call It What It Is is a cut above many of his records. --AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Ben Harper - Fight For Your Mind (1995/2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

Fight for Your Mind is an album by Ben Harper. Released in August 1995, it was his last solo album before adding the Innocent Criminals to his line-up. Reviews were generally very positive, praising Harper's fusion of multiple genres, from folk ("Another Lonely Day"), folk rock ("Gold to Me"), Black Sabbath-style riffing heavy metal ("Ground on Down") and politically charged reggae ("Excuse Me Mr.").
After Harper's well-received debut, Welcome to the Cruel World, he expanded on his fanbase by touring relentlessly with jam bands like Dave Matthews Band. On this, his second album, Harper added a more refined sense of his own intense spirituality, such as on the gospel-influenced album closers, "Power of the Gospel", "God Fearing Man" and "One Road to Freedom".
