Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto, Op. 35 / Stravinsky: Les Noces - Patricia Kopatchnikskaja, MuscAeterna, Teodor Currentzis (2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

Release Date: 2016
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit

Duration: 00:57:07
Recorded: 2013-2014

Testament to the versatility and musical command that Teodor Currentzis and his unique orchestra and choir possess, this new album brings together two diverse masterworks from two titans of Russian music. Although they have been acquainted for a long time prior, this recording represents the first musical collaboration between Teodor Currentzis and the exceptional violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja. The instant artistic rapport (an “artistic wedding” of sorts) between these two maverick musicians can be heard in this dynamic new recording of Tchaikovsky’s Violin concerto - one of the most popular works in the violin repertory. Currentzis’ authentic approach to the folk influences in Stravinsky’s music (as revealed in Le Sacre du Printemps) is again very present in his interpretation of Les Noces. This work for percussion, pianists, chorus, and vocal soloists - originally composed as ballet music - is probably one of Stravinsky’s most rarely recorded works. The work is based on a Russian peasant wedding, which the cover artwork references. Exceptional to this new recording is that the MusicAeterna choir members are all native-Russian speakers who bring another level of understanding and authenticity to the work. After her prominent participation in the “Rameau – The Sound of Light” recording, Nadine Koutcher – freshly crowned “2015 Cardiff Singer of the Year” - returns to sing the leading soprano solo part in Les Noces.

Their previous album, Tincian, (also featured on Society of Sound) was described by The Line of Best Fit as “ripped through with transcendence; a brooding melancholy as much as a gossamer dreaminess”, and was voted Best Album at the 2015 BBC Radio 2 Awards by the public.

Sonic Youth - Dirty (1992/2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

Artist: Sonic Youth
Title: Dirty
Genre: Rock, Alternative/Indie Rock, Experimental Rock, Noise-Rock, Grunge
Label: © DGC/Geffen Records
Release Date: 1992/2016
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 192kHz/24bit
Source: ponomusic.com
Duration: 01:02:11
Recorded: Early 1992, The Magic Shop and Sear Sound, New York City, New York, United States

When DGC Records signed Nirvana in 1991, one of DGC's A&R reps expressed the opinion that, with plenty of touring and the right promotion, the new act might sell as well as its labelmate and touring partner Sonic Youth. The surprise success of Nevermind upended previous commercial expectations for Sonic Youth (among other established alternative rock bands), and when Dirty was released in 1992, it was seen by many as the band's big move toward the grunge market. Which doesn't make a lot of sense if you actually listen to the album; while Butch Vig's clean but full-bodied production certainly gave Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo's guitars greater punch and presence than they had in the past, and many of the songs move in the increasingly tuneful direction the band had been traveling with Daydream Nation and Goo, most of Dirty is good bit more jagged and purposefully discordant than its immediate precursors, lacking the same hallucinatory grace as Daydream Nation or the hard rock sheen of Goo. If anything, Dirty finds Sonic Youth revisiting the territory the band mapped out on Sister -- merging the propulsive structures of rock (both punk and otherwise) with the gorgeous chaos of their approach to the electric guitar -- and it shows how much better they'd gotten at it in the past five years, from the curiously beautiful "Wish Fulfillment" and "Theresa's Sound World" to the brutal "Drunken Butterfly" and "Purr." Dirty was also Sonic Youth's most overtly political album, railing against the abuses of the Reagan/Bush era on "Youth Against Fascism," "Swimsuit Issue," and "Chapel Hill," a surprising move from a band so often in love with cryptic irony. Heard today, Dirty doesn't sound like a masterpiece (like Daydream Nation) or a gesture toward the mainstream audience (like Goo) -- it just sounds like a damn good rock album, and on those terms it ranks with Sonic Youth's best work. --AllMusic Review by Mark Deming

Smokey Robinson - A Quiet Storm (1975/2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

Artist: Smokey Robinson
Title: A Quiet Storm
Genre: R&B, Soul, Quiet Storm, Smooth Soul
Label: © Motown Records, a Division of UMG Recordings, Inc.
Release Date: 1975/2016
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 192kHz/24bit

Duration: 00:36:36
Recorded: 1974

Smokey Robinson invented a style of songwriting and singing that influenced artists as diverse as James Taylor, Michael Jackson, Bobby Brown, Boyz ll Men and Linda Ronstadt, to name just a few. Smokey's gentle, sensual vocals are effortlessly delivered but completely captivating. No less an authority and devoted fan than Bob Dylan once called Smokey Robinson, 'the greatest living poet in a America today.' 1975's „A Quiet Storm“ contains all the patented Smokey touches: the sweet irresistible melodies; the slow-dancing ballads; the jump-for-joy love songs. You can't go wrong with a Smokey Robinson record, no matter what it's decade of origin, but this is perhaps his definitive '70s album, defining a smooth, contemporary R&B style that would be emulated for decades to come. As exemplified by „A Quiet Storm“, Smokey's gift is constant and genuine.
