Gould was an enthusiastic moviegoer. All the more regrettable, then, that his film work is so meagerly documented. To create the soundtrack for George Roy Hill’s film version of Kurt Vonnegut’s novel, Gould used his own Bach recordings as well as the Fourth Brandenburg with Pablo Casals conducting the Marlboro Festival Orchestra.

Modern jazz with a twist, based on a cohesive group effort rather than on personal virtuosity; that's what the members of Misc (formerly known as Trio Jérôme Beaulieu) are going for. Jérôme Beaulieu, Philippe Leduc and William Côté created the band in 2011 shortly after their studies at University of Montreal. Since then, they have been using audio sampling and a variety of percussions, effects and prepared instruments to broaden the usual jazz trio's set of textures and moods. The group lifted off quickly, winning both Montreal's « Jazz en Rafale » and Festi-Jazz de Rimouski's Grand Prize in their first year of existence. A first album entitled L'Homme Sur La Lune (Man on the Moon) hit the shelves in spring 2012 and got nominated for an Opus Prize (Jazz album of the Year). Radio-Canada's 2013-2014 Jazz Revelation now launch their second group effort, Chercher l'Équilibre (Searching for Balance) in the midst of a year filled with projects!
The new album is the result of a true collaboration between the three musicians. In a more elaborate way than the two previous albums, they each contributed to the rythmic, melodic and harmonic arrangements to create an unique sound that sets this trio apart from the rest.

Marvin Gaye - I Want You (1976/2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 192kHz/24bit

Recorded: 1975–76, Marvin's Room and Hitsville West in Los Angeles

I Want You is the fourteenth studio album by American soul musician Marvin Gaye, released March 16, 1976, on Motown-subsidiary label Tamla Records. Recording sessions for the album took place throughout 1975 and 1976 at Motown Recording Studios, also known as Hitsville West, and Gaye's personal studio Marvin's Room in Los Angeles, California. The album has often been noted by critics for producer Leon Ware's exotic, low-key production and the erotic, sexual themes in his and Gaye's songwriting. The album's cover artwork adapts neo-mannerist artist Ernie Barnes's famous painting The Sugar Shack (1971).
I Want You consisted of Gaye's first recorded studio material since his highly successful and well-received album Let's Get It On (1973). While it marked a change in musical direction for Gaye, departing from his trademark Motown and doo-wop-influenced sound for funky, light-disco soul, the album maintained and expanded on his previous work's sexual themes. Following a mixed response from critics at the time of its release, I Want You has earned retrospective recognition from writers and music critics as one of Gaye's most controversial works and influential to such musical styles as disco, quiet storm, R&B, and neo soul.

For an unknown composer to write one vast symphony with no immediate prospect of performance might be regarded as a misfortune; to begin a second straight after it, as Oscar Wilde might have said, looks like carelessness. This, however, was precisely what Gustav Mahler did in 1888. He was developing a reputation as a conductor – after studies in Vienna and minor jobs in Prague and Kassel he had landed a plum post at the Leipzig Opera – but as a composer he remained a near-nobody. Ironically, his first composing success was with an opera that was not even his own: a reconstruction of Carl Maria von Weber’s Die drei Pintos premiered in Leipzig in January 1888. Thus emboldened, he embarked on his First Symphony. But he faced the same problem as all Austro-German symphonists of the era: how to cope with the legacy of Beethoven.
The problem was for Mahler even more acute, for he was a devoted Wagnerian to boot with a pilgrimage to Bayreuth already behind him, whose later productions of the music dramas would be hailed for both their spirit of innovation and their fidelity to the text. Wagner had famously declared that Beethoven’s Ninth signified the ‘end’ of the symphony, with music drama the only aesthetically valid genre of the future. As a nod to his friend Franz Liszt, however, Wagner had left open a metaphorical door for the symphonic poem, which is perhaps one of the reasons why this is what Mahler first called his new symphony. Upon its completion, he immediately sketched out a further ‘symphonic poem’, entitled Todtenfeier (‘Funeral rite’), though it was not until 1893 that he returned to it, made it the first movement of a ‘Second Symphony’, and finally called it thus.

Older collectors will remember with affection the cycle of Mahler symphonies recorded by Maurice Abravanel and the Utah Symphony Orchestra that began in the 1960s. Those pioneering recordings (the first complete Mahler cycle to be recorded in the USA) not only introduced Mahler to many listeners but raised the profile of this fine Salt Lake City based orchestra.

Now, from the Reference Recordings Fresh! Label, we have a compelling new account of Mahler's 1st Symphony recorded in state-of-the-art sound from this same orchestra under their current Music Director, the Swiss conductor Thierry Fischer. This was taken from live performances given in the Maurice Abravanel Hall (September 2014)

Lord Huron - Strange Trails (2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/44,1kHz

Artist: Lord Huron
Title: Strange Trails
Genre: Rok, Folk Rock, Alternative/Indie Rock
Label: © IAmSound Records
Release Date: 2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 44,1kHz/24bit
Source: Qobuz
Duration: 00:55:39

On their follow-up, Strange Trails, Lord Huron settle into the Western themes and sense of open prairies that marked the band's debut, Lonesome Dreams. Frontman/songwriter Ben Schneider fully embraces the American West/Troubadour character, illustrated even in song titles like "Dead Man's Hand," "Meet Me in the Woods," and "The Yawning Grave." The album's lyrics tell haunted stories of adventure and survival ("On the night you disappeared/Oh, if I had seen it clear/But a strange light in the sky was shining right into my eyes"), with nature imagery ("In a grave out here where the carrions cry"), and the occasional old-time turn of phrase ("Before I commence my ride/I'm asking Lily to be my bride"). With warm electric guitar sounds, soft and constant reverb, harmonized vocals, and a faint but persistent twang, it's a contemporary, specifically Fleet Foxes-reminiscent, indie folk-influenced rock haunted by allusions to the Old West. Listeners may envision fringe and spurs without any overt country presence (though there's certainly a subtle one) outside of lilting vocals, such as on "Way Out There." The band still focuses more on atmosphere and haunting, harmonic sound and rhythm than on progressions or memorable hooks, but the landscapes that they create are consistent and sound-defining, and there's no shortage of eerie beauty in the melodies. "The Night We Met," in particular, has a lullaby quality to its wistful, singsong melody ("I don't know what I’m supposed to do/Haunted by the ghost of you"). The record takes a few interesting musical routes on its journey: the reverbed rockabilly and surf sounds of "The World Ender," the campfire-gathering feel of "Meet Me in the Woods" with handclaps and female vocal harmonies, and the pulsing, ramblin' road tune "Frozen Pines" all contribute to an impression of timelessness as well as a certain folksiness befitting the album's well-established rural themes. There are no big surprises here; fans of Lonesome Dreams will surely be pleased, and Strange Trails' serene ambience and unconventional narrative may capture the imagination of inclined first-timers. --AllMusic Review by Marcy Donelson
