Successful as pianist, composer, and especially as conductor, André Previn has frequently bridged the gap between popular and so-called "serious" music, and in doing so broadened the horizons of both.
His father was an accomplished pianist (though a lawyer by profession) and determined that his son would follow in his musical footsteps. The talented young André received instruction on the piano at the Berlin Hochschule, and also absorbed music in a less formal environment during the many private recitals given in the Previn home. In the mid-1930s the Jewish family fled to France where André continued as a scholarship student at the Paris Conservatoire. In 1939, the Previn family relocated to southern California.
Life was difficult for the family (all their possessions had been left behind in Europe, and Previn's father was qualified only in German law), and though barely ten years old, André supplemented the family income by accompanying films at movie houses and playing in jazz clubs. At 14 he started working at MGM (Charles Previn, André's great uncle, was head of music at Universal Studios), orchestrating and arranging film music, and slowly saved enough money to study composition with Castelnuovo-Tedesco. At 18 André was asked to compose his own full-length film score (The Sun Comes Up, 1949), which resulted in his first experience on the podium in front of a real orchestra -- Previn quickly realized that his future lay in conducting, though he understood the gulf between film music and serious conducting to be a wide one indeed.

On Common Ground, Gary Burton's debut release on Mack Avenue Records, the Grammy-winning pioneer of the four-mallet technique of playing the vibes is not only delivering his first studio album since 2005, but is also introducing his latest band. Well-known throughout his five-decade career for his quartets (beginning with his 1967 group featuring Larry Coryell, Roy Haynes and Steve Swallow), Burton is returning to the configuration for the first time since the mid-90s.
He expresses great enthusiasm for the new band's alchemy. "I've always liked the vibraphone-guitar sound," says Burton, whose masterful vibes glisten throughout Common Ground. "It's something that I discovered when Nashville country guitarist Hank Garland invited me in the '60s to record with him. The sound of the two instruments together has an ideal timbre and coolness."

The Brass of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra with Ivan Meylemans (2007) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/88,2kHz

Recorded at Concertgebouw Amsterdam in November and December 2006

The Brass of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra ensemble was formed more or less by chance in 2003 when the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra decided to skip its annual American tour; the American Friends of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra saw their chance and invited the brass players of the orchestra to give concerts and master classes in the USA. After a successful tour to New York and Philadelphia with master classes at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and the Juilliard School in New York, the players decided to continue giving concerts as a complete section.
The aim of the Brass of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is to demonstrate the versatility of brass instruments in terms of repertoire and instrumental combinations to both the general public and to music students by means of concerts and master classes. The forces used vary from small groups to large ensembles of around twenty players, with percussion also being used on occasion.
The original idea for this CD came from the Prix de Salon, an incentive prize for young musicians from the Concertgebouw Orchestra that must be used for their further musical development. The prize was initiated in 2005 by the Salon, a group of young professionals from prominent firms who wished to support the younger members of the orchestra in particular. Ivan Meylemans was the first winner of this prize and saw it as a way of planning a recording of lesser-known repertoire by well-known composers for the Brass of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra as well as of providing further encouragement for the ensemble and its good internal relations.

Georg Philipp Telemann - Twelve Fantasies for Solo Violin - Rachel Podger (2002) High-Fidelity DSF 5.0 Surround DSD64/2.82MHz

Сomposer: Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767)
Artist: Rachel Podger
Title: Telemann: Twelve Fantasies for Solo Violin
Genre: Classical
Label: © Channel Classics Records B.V.
Release Date: 2002
Quality: DSF Stereo DSD64/2.82MHz
Source: nativeDSDmusic
Duration: 01:14:14
Recorded: St. Micahels Church, West Compton, Dorset UK

In November of 2001, one of my first recordings using the DSD technology was in a small unknown church – Dorset England. Rachel Podger had chosen the church as she had played a concert there as some point and thought it would be perfect for the solo Telemann Sonatas. I agreed sight unseen.
The church turned out to be very small with very close side walls with no place for me to sit with my equipment. Granted it was very silent ( in the middle of fields) but I was just not happy with the acoustics so that I decided to only release this album on normal 44.1 pcm. A couple of months ago I listened to the DSD master again and have now decided to still bring this out on DSD stereo and multichannel. DSD does give the extra dimension of imagery and honesty to the sound which in the end does enlighten the music listening. Jared Sacks

Sergei Ivanovich Taneyev - Chamber Music with Piano - Duo Cammarano Deljavan, Solisti dell'Officina Musicale (2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/88,2kHz

Recorded: 21st-25th November 2013 at Teatro Comunale di Atri, Teramo

"The musical output of the Russian composer Sergei Ivanovich Taneyev (1856-1915) has been suspiciously absent from the mainstream of public performance. Perhaps this can be attributed to a number of reasons, but it should certainly be held that it is not because of the music itself.
As a master of intellect and balance, his compositions share with Brahms a sturdy structural outline combined with a romantic heat which emanates from every phrase and gesture. The confidence of his craft along with a frank and sometimes brutal honesty was to put him at odds with many of his contemporaries, not the least of which were the group of nationalist composers known as The Mighty Handful.
But it would be his close friendship with Tchaikovsky that would bring him to the forefront of the debate between the practitioners of nationalistic style and those of the European. At the heart of his composition, however, was his particular skill and affinity for counterpoint. As a student of the polyphony from its earliest incarnation in the late medieval period to the high baroque, Taneyev's works are rich in the colors and harmonies produced by a strict adherence to traditional and scientific principles of counterpoint practice. This is certainly an attribute he would instill in his own students which included Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, Medtner and Gliere." - Zachariah Stoughton

Although Itzhak Perlman has appeared live with the Italian pianist and composer Bruno Canino on many occasions over the years, this Stravinsky recital is the only album they have ever made together — a unique and treasured record of their work together. Five years after setting down the Prokofiev sonatas for RCA (1969), and while he was still putting together his complete set of the Beethoven sonatas for Decca (1973–75), Perlman recorded this repertoire for EMI in what is one of the finest gems of his discography, and one of his own favourite albums.

Recorded: 6, 9, 12, 16 October 2011 at the Audio-Visual department of The Amsterdam Music Theatre

Electra lives in a no-man’s-land – a region inhabited by no one else. It is for this very reason that she occupies this region with unwavering determination, for only here can she validate the essence of her being: contradiction. She is at one and the same time nobody and more than everyone else; she lives here, but she is in fact also dead. She remains at the place of her youth, but never sets foot in her family home. With all these discrepancies, she is the embodiment of contradiction, in two senses: as contradiction in and of itself and in relation to the outside world, against everything and everyone, everywhere and always. The scene of this contradiction is the threshold, where she continuously dwells and which is not an actual place or, better said, is a non-place, a no-man’s-land.
