These days, who would ever imagine that the first commercial recording of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, one of the most popular classical works in the world, had been released as late as 1947? And how many of us would be able to name the soloist on this pioneering release (on the Concert Hall label)? It was in fact American violinist Louis Kaufman (1905–1994) who was the first to unearth, in its entirety, Il Cimento dell’Armonia e dell’Inventione, the set of twelve violin concertos of which the Four Seasons makes up the first four. Since Kaufman, countless other violinists have left their mark on this masterpiece of the Italian Baroque, developing its treasure trove of invention in line with the trends of the day. Itzhak Perlman himself has made two recordings of it, on both occasions directing from the violin. His first version, featured here, was made with the London Philharmonic in 1976, while the second, with the Israel Philharmonic, dates from seven years later (see volume 32).

Originally released on two 10-inch vinyl discs in early 1955, these recordings spotlight some of the best from Blue Note's West Coast jazz roster of the day, as the title implies, recorded in Los Angeles and featuring prominent jazz musicians from both coasts such as Harry "Sweets" Edison, Stan Levey, Conte Candoli and Marty Paich. The "blindfold test" refers to the fact that the first volume was originally issued with no credits, presenting a challenge to jazz fans to identify the players, only revealed on the second album. This note appeared on the original record jacket of the first volume: "We're curious to see which of Blue Note's customers, long noted for their astute jazz tastes and discernment, can come up with a complete or at least partially correct answer."

Recorded: 3 and 16 December 2011 at the Audio-Visual department of The Amsterdam Music Theatre

Orest, the opera by the German composer Manfred Trojahn, was written for the Netherlands Opera. The world premiere took place in Amsterdam, amid spectacular splashes of gore and commensurate splatters of sound, in December 2011 and this recording was made during those performances. The Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Marc Albrecht, and the title role of Orestes is sung by the celebrated German baritone Dietrich Henschel with Rosemary Joshua as Helen.
Manfred Trojahn’s Orest is a music theatre work in six scenes set to the composer’s own libretto. This 2011 premiere production by Netherlands Opera was directed by Katie Mitchell with set designs by Giles Cadle. Netherlands Opera commissioned Trojahn’s sixth opera to finish a series that focused on the House of Atreus, rounding off the cycle of violence by adding the murder of Helen of Troy to the carnage surrounding Iphigenie, Idomeneo and Elektra. Trojahn’s libretto is based on Euripides and the narrative follows the Greek story closely. The subject matter, with its myriad musical and literary allusions, seems to have steered the composer towards a harmonic language more rooted in the past than he might otherwise have adopted. Certainly Richard Strauss’s influence is amply audible.

In the two years since Tomasz Stanko’s much-loved Soul of Things, both the trumpeter and his young Polish band have continued to make their mark. Many miles of touring, on both sides of the Atlantic, have honed their already exceptional group understanding. Suspended Night builds upon the conceptual framework established by its predecessor – the bulk of the album is devoted to a series of haunting and soulful “Suspended Variations” - but the improvisational quotient is expanded, as all participants take more solo space, and more chances.

The Wild Tchoupitoulas - The Wild Tchoupitoulas (1976/2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

Artist: The Wild Tchoupitoulas

Release Date: 1976/2016
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 192kHz/24bit

Recorded: Sea-Saint Recording Studios, New Orleans

The Wild Tchoupitoulas is a 1976 album by the New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian tribe The Wild Tchoupitoulas. The album features the "call-and-response" style chants typical of Mardi Gras Indians. Vocals were provided by George Landry, as "Big Chief Jolly", as well as other members of his Mardi Gras tribe. Instrumentation was provided in part by members of the New Orleans band The Meters. The album also notably features Landry's nephews, the Neville Brothers, providing harmonies and some of the instrumentation. While not a commercial success, the effort was well received critically and the experience recording it encouraged the four Neville brothers to perform together for the first time as a group. Meaningful of the geographic location of New Orleans as a Caribbean city, "Meet de Boys on the Battlefront" is based on the melody and rhythm of Trinidadian calypso artist Lord Invader's 1943 "Rum and Coca Cola" made famous in the U.S. by The Andrew Sisters in 1944. In 2012 the album was added to the U.S. Library of Congress' National Registry, a designation of "cultural, artistic and historic importance to the nation's aural legacy."
