Although Itzhak Perlman has appeared live with the Italian pianist and composer Bruno Canino on many occasions over the years, this Stravinsky recital is the only album they have ever made together — a unique and treasured record of their work together. Five years after setting down the Prokofiev sonatas for RCA (1969), and while he was still putting together his complete set of the Beethoven sonatas for Decca (1973–75), Perlman recorded this repertoire for EMI in what is one of the finest gems of his discography, and one of his own favourite albums.

Electra lives in a no-man’s-land – a region inhabited by no one else. It is for this very reason that she occupies this region with unwavering determination, for only here can she validate the essence of her being: contradiction. She is at one and the same time nobody and more than everyone else; she lives here, but she is in fact also dead. She remains at the place of her youth, but never sets foot in her family home. With all these discrepancies, she is the embodiment of contradiction, in two senses: as contradiction in and of itself and in relation to the outside world, against everything and everyone, everywhere and always. The scene of this contradiction is the threshold, where she continuously dwells and which is not an actual place or, better said, is a non-place, a no-man’s-land.

“Die Narbe / The Scar” is a project by Berlin-based photographer Martin U. K. Lengemann. On the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the war, Lengemann told the newspaper ”Welt am Sonntag“ his own personal history of the First World War from the perspective of his great-grandfather and events on Western Front. His wish is reconciliation instead of division. For decades, he has been committed to promoting understanding between Germans and Britons. For many years, he has researched the history, accounts and music of the Great War.
Lengemann, whose other great passion is classical music, found three composers who stand out in their generation. Now the Horenstein Ensemble, one of Germany's best known chamber ensembles, together with the soprano Barabara Krieger, has released a CD at ACOUSENCE. They are playing the music of these three composers who died in the Great War between 1914 and 1918: Rudi Stephan, George Butterworth und Cecil Coles, three composers, who unfortunately could not develop her youthful, very exciting work. What remains is the question: What would have left us this generation…
