Gould’s first release after becoming a “concert drop-out.” For years he had put his Steinway CD 318 through myriad “operations” in order “to try to design an instrument […] which can add to the undeniable resource of the modern piano something of the clarity and tactile facility of the harpsichord.” The result was “a slight nervous tic in the middle register which in the slower passages can be heard emitting a sort of hiccup.” Indeed it can!

Johann Sebastian Bach - Sonatas & Partitas, BWV 1001-1006 - Markku Luolajan-Mikkola (2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Duration: 158 minutes 0 seconds
Recorded: June 2014, Church of St Catherine, Karjaa, Finland

With two Gramophone Awards to his name and a reputation synonymous with excellence, Markku Luolajan-Mikkola is a musician who is at the top of his profession. Transcribing Bach's hugely popular works for cello, especially one in Baroque set-up, was not without its risks, although performing on Baroque cello also offers compelling advantages.
Luolajan-Mikkola takes his interpretative cue from the set-up of the Baroque instrument, which informs such issues as tuning, vibrato, fingering and articulation. Performing the Sonatas and Partitas on the cello is so challenging that it is almost impossible to imagine a cellist of Bach's day playing them, but Luolajan-Mikkola rises to the challenge with aplomb.
Luolajan-Mikkola's main aim in this recording has been to capture emotion and convey expression according to the respective key and character of each movement, which he achieves in spades.

Ever in search of the ideal sound: for a while Gould apparently planned to record the Well-Tempered Clavier on a “harpsipiano” (“a neurotic piano that thinks it’s a harpsichord”), but Columbia declined. What remained is a level of polyphonic lucidity and contrapuntal rigor that beggars comparison.

Gould launched his complete recording of the “Pianists’ Old Testament” on 10 January 1962. It would eventually occupy him for more than nine years. “We recorded ten or even fifteen different versions of some of the preludes and fugues. Nearly every one was perfect, note for note, yet still completely different. It was an amazing experience to witness how each version became something completely new in Gould’s hands.”

Johann Sebastian Bach - Die Kunst der Fuge, BWV 1080 - Cedric Pescia (2014) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Recorded: 18-19 June 2013, Studio Teldex, Berlin

Harpsichordist Gustav Leonhardt said that Bach had written his Art of Fugue for himself, without thought of performing it on any instrument in particular. In the presence of a speculative work, every musician is free to chisel the perfect lines of polyphony as he or she chooses. Up to the final canon, which continues to pose the question of its incompletion. It is the Franco-Swiss pianist Cédric Pescia, with his subtle, understated playing, who will make this sublime score sing. But he will do so on an untempered piano, which is hardly banal! After a first æon disc devoted to Cage, which created a tremendous stir, Cédric Pescia deploys a low-key art in Bach, a sense of rhythm combined with a rubato of extreme subtlety and an inventiveness in the phrasings and ornaments, both flowing and sharp, that have no equivalent in the discography. Such relief, such life!
