The Astonishing is undisputedly the most ambitious undertaking by a band whose cerebral compositions already define the vanguard of progressive hard rock.
The Astonishing is enriched exponentially by the integration of a real orchestra and choir, arranged by conductor David Campbell, whose work graces over 450 gold and platinum albums, including watershed releases from Adele, Justin Timberlake, Linkin Park, Evanescence, Beyoncé, and his son, Beck. The Astonishing was produced by Petrucci with engineering and mixing by Richard Chycki, whose resume includes work with Rush, Aerosmith, and Mick Jagger. Other organic sounds are more abundant than at any point in the band's history, with Rudess in particular relishing the tones from a grand piano and Hammond organ.
Like Tommy or The Wall, the songs on The Astonishing work as both singular compositions and overall story components. Writing the music as a duo, Petrucci and Rudess venture into unexplored corners of their sound without sacrificing their musical identity.

Diego Torres is a three-time Latin Grammy-winning Argentine pop singer, songwriter, musician, and actor who has explored many realms of Latin pop, tropical, and even rock & roll music. He is the son of the legendary Lolita Torres.
Torres formed his first band, Macca, while he was still in his teens. In 1989, he began his acting career by landing a role on the television series Nosotros y los Otros, which lasted for three years; he worked in other telenovelas as well. Although he was acting, he was still with Macca and trying to get a record deal. Due to internal tensions and the different career goals of its members, they split in 1991. Undaunted, Torres pursued a solo recording career and got a record deal a year later. Diego Torres was issued 1992 and sold 200,000 copies. Almost simultaneously, he won a role in the play El Zorro that year alongside actor Pablo Rago. He re-entered the studio and emerged with Tratar de Estar Mejor in 1994. It displayed his diverse talent in delivering reggae, ballads, and pop-funk. The title track, "Deja de Pedir Perdón," and the song "San Salvador" were hit singles. He promoted the recording by touring all over Spain and Latin America with several television appearances added to the mix. The album sold over 700,000 copies globally.

The Second Piano Concerto was written before the first and completed in 1830, the year in which the composer set out for Vienna and then Paris. Chopin’s Variations on Là ci darem la mano, bear witness to his admiration for Mozart, instilled by his earliest teacher, the Bohemian Wojciech Żywny. The Grande Polonaise brillante in E flat, Op. 22, was written in Vienna, and later augmented with the introductory Andante spianato.

Chopin loves singing and as a singing poet of the piano, he inveigles into the universe of dreams. Chopin composed the piano concerto in e minor at the age of 20 during spring/summer of 1830 in Warsaw. It emerged shortly after his concerto in f minor and belongs to the standard repertoire of concert literature. In fall 1830, Chopin left Warsaw to go to Paris. This work is based mainly on polish dancing rhythms; especially prominent is the krakowiak in the last movement. Eventually, his work is characterized by its exceptional cantability. Chopin writes opera for the piano. He most likely performed this concerto himself in Warsaw in the same string casting it can be heard here. --Franz Vorraber
