It was in 1993 when Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek and the Hilliard Ensemble, a vocal quartet from Britain focused on music of the Renaissance, have first recorded together. Their outstanding piece “Officium”, with Garbarek as an additional free-ranging ‘voice’, has resulted in consistently inventive music making since then and sold more than one million copies. The follower “Mnemosyne” (1998) took the story further, expanding the repertoire beyond ‘early music’ to embrace works both ancient and modern.
Now, after another decade of shared experiences, Garbarek and the Hilliards found together once again in the St. Gerold´s monastery and recorded their third album “Officium Novum”. Its central focus lies, besides music from Russia, France, Spain and the Estonian Arvo Pärt, on the music of Armenia based on the adaptations of Komitas Vardapet, pieces which draw upon both medieval sacred music and the bardic tradition of the Caucasus. Therefore the musicians have traveled to the countries, studied the music and present it with a passion which shows another unexpected advancement.

Franz Joseph Haydn - Keyboard Concerto - Franz Vorraber, Castle Chamber Orchestra (2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Papa Haydn - nothing of the sort! The great musician always knew how to entertain people without using cheep templates filled with gaudy timbres or highly dramatic gestures. For him, joie de vivre is admissible, even desirable. Behind this rhythmic vitality and all the gestures, the master distinguishes and seduces people to superior thoughts, too. Little is known about the creation of the piano concert in G major. Guaranteed is just a date of performance on April 28th, 1784 at the Concert spirituel in Paris with the blind Viennese pianist Maria Theresia Paradis, whom i. a. Mozart composed for. The importance of Haydn as author of concertos is still underestimated in the History of Music. This particular concerto is composed for a string quartet only, without blowers. It comprises a typical, classically built work full of surprises and embellishments. This extent of humor and playfulness will rarely be accomplished by composers later born. --Franz Vorraber

Franz Vorraber - Concerto classico for Piano & String Orchestra, Op. 37 - Franz Vorraber, Castle Chamber Orchestra (2016) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

The "concerto classico" op. 37 refers, as it can be seen from the title, back to the classical structure and the motives in terms of Haydn. As customary habit at the time, rhythmic set phrases and harmonic collocations of today have been used and processed. In the theme of the first movement can easily be noticed. Thus, the formal arrangement between tutti and solo is obliged to the classical model. Some surprising twists, especially the intensifying rhythm throughout the piece, combine typical formula of the First Viennese School to contemporary elements. The simple theme of the second movement is enriched with complex harmonic turns. Due to the interjections of the piano, a harmonically opposed dialogue is created. The pianos' harmonics, conducted with whole tones and additionally colored by the fifths of the strings, comes finally to a quiet ending. After a virtuosic opening, the third movement is designed concerto-grosso-style. The tutti is dominating the string orchestra. It is interrupted by the pianos’ soloist tours with a rather "groovy" basso continuo. The contrabass is taking the bass line in the middle part to calm the ensemble. After a wild cadence of the piano, the strings return with momentum and vividly end the work with copious virtuous piano figures. --Franz Vorraber

Fonseca - Conexion (2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/44,1kHz

Artist: Fonseca
Title: Conexión
Genre: Pop, Latin Pop
Label: © Sony Music Latin
Release Date: 2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 44,1kHz/24bit

Duration: 00:46:42

Born in Bogota, Colombia, Fonseca chose music at an early age, creating and selling his first compositions to friends and family by the age of 12. Studying music formally at institutions such as Javeriana University in Bogota and Berklee College of Music in Boston, he honed his compositional and performance skills. Fonseca's self-titled debut gained him considerable attention in Colombia, including the notice of artists like Shakira and Juanes, both of whom offered him subsequent collaboration and performance opportunities. Sharing the stage with Shakira on her Mongoose tour, and Juanes at Campin Stadium in Bogota garnered Fonseca the recognition and momentum he would need for his second album, 2005's Corazón, which explored the crossroads where pop/rock influences meet the vallenato, bullerengue, and tambora rhythms of Fonseca's native land. Released by EMI, Corazón was well-received, reaching number six on Billboard's Latin Tropical chart. Gratitud followed in 2008, with Ilusion arriving in 2011. It was nominated for a Grammy as Best Latin Pop album and won the Latin Grammy for Best Tropical Fusion album. Its charting single, "Desde Que No Estás," was nominated for Tropical Song of the Year.
Fonseca, by then well-known as an ambassador of Colombia's music to the world, recorded Sinfonico in concert with Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional de Colombia in 2013. Released a year later, it was Latin Grammy-nominated for Album of the Year, and won for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. In early 2015, Fonseca was awarded La Musa Premio Triunfador by the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame, and in May received the first-ever Contempiorary Icon Award at the SESAC Latina Music Awards. In the fall, he released the album Conexión. It charted thanks to the success of its pre-release singles "Y No Me Faltas" and "Y Tu´" (a duet with Juanes). The set also included a second duet, "Amor Eterno," with Victor Manuelle. --Evan C. Gutierrez

Erland von Koch - Symphonies Nos.3 & 4 - Swedish Radio Symphony, Per Hammarstrom (2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/48kHz

Recorded: May 2011 (Symphony No. 3); June 2013 (Sinfonia seria; Impulsi ); May 2010 (Nordiskt capriccio – at a public performance) at the Berwald Hall, Stockholm, Sweden

Along with Lars-Erik Larsson and Dag Wirén, Erland von Koch was part of a generation of composers who all made their débuts during the 1930s. Active until the end of a very long life (1910–2009), von Koch became one of Sweden’s best loved composers, himself describing his artistic goals as follows: ‘I aim for a simple, clear, melodic style, often with elements of folk tone and with a definite rhythmic profile... The older you get, the more aware you become of the importance of melody.’ One of von Koch’s most frequently performed orchestral works is Nordiskt capriccio, which was inspired by a folk tune from Dalecarlia, and which forms the festive finale on the present disc. The compositions which precede it here are less well known, however – Impulsi (the first part of a triptych later completed with the works Echi and Ritmi) was taken up by conductors such as Sergiu Comissiona and Walter Weller, but the two symphonies appear for the first time on disc. Especially in Symphony No.3, influences from Bartók and Hindemith can be detected – composed in 1948, it is a work which in its thematic material contrasts defiance with lyricism and, finally, a feeling of release. Sinfonia seria, von Koch’s fourth work in the genre, followed a few years later, undergoing a final revision in 1962. As indicated by the title, the underlying mood of the work is grave and bittersweet – possibly this is reflected in the composer’s own words regarding the thankless task of writing symphonies: ‘They are rarely played – especially if they are Swedish – and it takes a long time before they are “discovered” and accepted, if indeed they ever are.’ With this disc, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and conductor Per Hammarström are making their case for a hoped-for, and long overdue ‘discovery’ of Erland von Koch’s symphonies.
