The brotherhood of writers likes to get hold of a slogan in order to effectively and boldly describe a composer and his oeuvre. However, such an abbreviated description is not without danger, if not followed by subtle arguments for the choice of the words. Nevertheless, please permit the undersigned also to mention a catchy phrase in the case of Johannes Brahms, which concentrates the mind on the essential. Therefore, should one wish to label Brahms as a composer, then it would most certainly not bear the inscription of a “symphonic” or “Lied” composer, but – if the word existed – of a “variationalistic” composer. After all, the main purpose of Brahms’ life as a composer was the constant transformation of the musical material at hand, the re-examination of traditional elements and forms. And also during the course of his four contributions to the symphonic genre, which indeed caused him such great problems at first, the variation model was ceded an increasingly important role.

Nashville Skyline is the ninth studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on April 9, 1969, by Columbia Records.
Building on the rustic style he experimented with on John Wesley Harding, Nashville Skyline displayed a complete immersion into country music. Along with the more basic lyrical themes, simple songwriting structures, and charming domestic feel, it introduced audiences to a radically new singing voice from Dylan—a soft, affected country croon.
The result received a generally positive reaction from critics, and was a commercial success. Reaching number 3 in the U.S., the album also scored Dylan his fourth UK No. 1 album.

Beethoven the song composer. The giant of the symphony and the sonata has somewhat overshadowed Beethoven the creator of songs. Yet his lieder are certainly not lacking in appeal or originality, as is shown by this selection that includes the most famous, from Adelaide to the first song cycle in history, An die ferne Geliebte. Christoph Berner plays a Streicher fortepiano of 1847, perfectly suited to both the songs and the wonderful Bagatelles op.126.

“Thank Your Lucky Stars is our sixth full length record. It was written after Depression Cherry from July 2014 - November 2014 and recorded during the same session as Depression Cherry. The songs came together very quickly and were driven by the lyrics and the narrative. In this way, the record feels very new for us, and a great departure from our last few records. Thematically, this record often feels political. It’s hard to put it into words, but something about the record made us want to release it without the normal “campaign.” We wanted it to simply enter the world and exist." - Beach House

Whilst unfulfilled passion and unre- quited love have driven many to depression, Béla Bartók was able to sublimate such personal disappointment into exuberant creativity. In February 1908, after his passionate courting attempts had been rejected by the Swiss violinist, Stefi Geyer, Bartók wrote her: “Having read your letter, I sat down at the piano – and had the sad premonition that, in life, music is to be my only consolation.” He illustrated these lines with a musical quotation which included the broken major-seventh chord, c-sharp – e – g-sharp – b-sharp, adding the words: “This is your leitmotiv.” It will have been particularly bitter for the composer that he had completed the score of the violin concerto, which had been written for Stefi, and into which he had poured his profound feelings for her, just a few days before her rejection. It is also to her that he dedicated the concerto, which, as in “a narcotic dream” (Römer), had been inspired a year earlier by his intoxicating love for her, but he did not do so without adding a tragic poem by Béla Balázs to the autograph score. Stefi Geyer kept the score until her death in 1956, with- out every performing the concerto publicly. It was not until 30 May 1958, thirteen years after Bartók’s death, that the concerto finally had its first public performance, in Basel, under the baton of Paul Sacher, with Hansheinz Schneeberger as soloist.

The image of Wilhelm Friedemann Bach (1710– 84) most widely prevalent in our time is that of an eldest son as it were haunted by the memory of his father but who, nevertheless, crippled by gambling and drinking debts, was obliged to sell his share of the precious inheritance constituted by Johann Sebastian’s manuscripts. Yet he was also one of the first composers to carve out a ‘freelance’ existence, like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart some years after him. And there is another characteristic of Wilhelm Friedemann that in its way prefigures the Romantic composers. Carl Friedrich Zelter, later to be one of Felix Mendelssohn’s teachers, wrote to Goethe: ‘As a composer, he had the tic douloureux of being original, of getting away from his father and his brothers, and thereby came to write in a petty, fussy, sterile way.’ Overshadowed by his father and his two more famous brothers, the ‘London Bach’ Johann Christian and the ‘Berlin Bach’ Carl Philipp Emanuel, Wilhelm Friedemann gives the impression of an unstable figure, capricious in character, who left an output that is admittedly interesting, in particular where his works for solo keyboard are concerned, but in the end fairly sparse. …

About the Mastering :: Four engineers at Abbey Road Studios in London have remastered these historic EMI recordings from their original analogue sources for release in pristine hi-def. Between them, Simon Gibson, Ian Jones, Andy Walter and Allan Ramsay have many years of experience remastering archive recordings for EMI and other record labels. The process always starts with finding all of the records and tapes in EMI's archive in London and comparing different sources and any previous CD reissues. We consult each recording's job file, which contains notes about the recording made by the engineer and producer. For example, this sometimes explain why there is more than one set of tapes to choose from. All of the tapes are generally in good condition and we play them on our Studer A80 π inch tape machine, after careful calibration of its replay characteristics.
In order to have the best digital remastering tools at our disposal for the remastering, we transfer from analogue to the digital domain at 96 KHz and 24-bit resolution using a Prism ADA-8 converter and capture the audio to our SADiE Digital Audio Workstation.

Johann Sebastian Bach - Suites Nos. 2, 3 & 6 - Maxim Rysanov (2014) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Сomposer: Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750)
Artist: Maxim Rysanov
Title: Bach, J.S. - Suites Nos. 2, 3 & 6
Genre: Classical
Label: © BIS Records
Release Date: 2014
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit
Source: eClassical
Duration: 64:49
Recorded: June 2012 (Suite No. 2) and May 2013 (Suites Nos 3 & 6) at Länna kyrka, Sweden

It was with three of Bach’s cello suites, transcribed for the viola, that Maxim Rysanov made his début on BIS in 2010 – a disc which was greeted with critical acclaim: in The Strad it earned the magazine’s prestigious recommendation, and to the reviewer on the German web site Klassik.com it ‘clearly demonstrated that Rysanov knows how to decipher Bach’s musical language with the assurance of a master’. His colleague in Sunday Times agreed, but had one reservation: ‘Rysanov’s recording of Bach’s suites is near perfection; the only flaw being that he did not perform all six.’ With the present disc that flaw is now being rectified, and the set is complete. During the time that passed between the two discs, and also between the two sessions in which Suites Nos 2, 3 and 6 were recorded, Rysanov’s conception of how to perform and record Bach has not remained static – as he commented in connection with the first disc: ‘it shows my approach to Bach playing at this point in time, with its mix of different backgrounds, schools and experiences from working with other musicians’. Four years later, the same can be said about its sequel – a testament to the infinite possibilities that these works hold in terms of interpretation and performance. For the sixth suite, which is usually transposed a fifth down, to G major when performed by violists, Rysanov has opted to remain faithful to the original key: ‘the purity of D major reminds me of being on top of a mountain, that clear air and a silence so powerful that it makes the ears start to buzz…’ The suite was originally written for a five-stringed instrument, but is heard here on Rysanov’s own four-stringed viola built by Giuseppe Guadagnini in 1780.

Andy Sheppard, Michel Benita, Sebastian Rochford - Trio Libero (2012) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/48kHz

Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 48kHz/24bit

Duration: 00:51:41
Recorded: July 2011, Auditorio Radiotelevisione svizerra, Lugano

UK saxophonist Andy Sheppard’s second ECM album introduces his freely lyrical new trio with Michel Benita and Sebastian Rochford. All three players share a sense of stylistic open-mindedness. Drummer Rochford is one of the young players changing perceptions of British jazz with bands Polar Bear and Acoustic Ladyland. Algiers-born French bassist Benita, who cites Charlie Haden and Scott LaFaro as influences, has played with Archie Shepp, Dewey Redman, Lee Konitz and in the ELB trio with Nguyên Lê and Peter Erskine. Repertoire here includes originals by Sheppard, Benita and Rochford, plus group improvisations and the standard “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows.” In all contexts, interaction is highly creative, as Benita and Rochford respond perceptively to Sheppard’s melodically and rhythmically inventive lines. Recorded July 2011 at Auditorio Radiotelevisione svizzera, Lugano.
