This is a full recording of the original Italian version (the “Vienna version” from 1762) of Gluck’s beloved take on the Orpheus myth, Orfeo et Euridice PLUS extra music written by Gluck for later performances of his opera. It includes virtuoso arias for Fagioli and as such represents a brilliant showcase for him and a collectible item for connoisseurs.
This is Franco Fagioli’s first ever recording of a complete opera in which he sings the title role and since, the role has become one of Franco’s calling cards in recent seasons. It is known for its absolutely gorgeous music, including one of opera’s most audience-pleasing tunes, the uber-famous aria “Che farò senza Euridice”.
This version of the opera (by far the most popular one) appears for the first time ever on period instruments on DG / Archiv, hence filling a major gap in our catalogue and is a substantial project featuring one of our exciting new signings in one of his finest roles.

Recorded and played by Ernst von Dohnányi – January, 1960

On February 5, 1960, Ernst von Dohnanyi, one of the great composers and piano virtuosi of the twentieth century, was busily engaged in the New York studios of Everest Records, making recordings of music by Beethoven. Shortly thereafter, he suffered a heart attack, followed by an attack of influenza. Four days later he was dead. Thus, the music he recorded for Everest represents the very last performances by this remarkable artist. At eighty-two, an age when most musicians have long since retired, Dohnanyi, as these recordings will attest, still possessed a commanding technique, an enormous tone and an authoritative interpretive style.
The music which Dohnanyi recorded here offers a representative cross-section of his art as composer and pianist. Ruralia Hungarica, dating from 1924, is a suite of seven pieces for piano, based on authentic Hungarian folk material. Later, Dohnanyi arranged five of these pieces for orchestra and three for violin and piano. The Three Pieces, Op. 23, were written about ten years earlier. The Etudes de Concert, Op. 28, were composed in 1916. There are six in all, the three recorded here constituting Book 2. Of these, No.6, the Capriccio in F Minor, is the most popular of all Dohnanyi’s works for the piano. The Rhapsody in F sharp Minor is the second of four Rhapsodies, Op. 11. The composer said that he wrote them with the movements of a sonata in mind, and frequently performed them consecutively. Concluding this program is Dohnanyi’s brilliant pianistic transcription of the Treasure Waltz from the operetta The Gypsy Baron by the “Waltz King,” Johann Strauss, the Younger.

This may be the most maligned item in the Costello catalogue -- not least by Costello himself who opens his liner notes with 'Congratulations! You have just bought our worst album!' It's certainly the oddest album Costello and the Attractions ever made together, but that's not always a bad thing: Tracks like 'The Home Truth,' 'Love Field' and the single 'The Only Flame in Town' show a move toward the deeper, more challenging song structures that Costello would master in the '90s. The Clive Langer/Alan Winstanley-produced album includes other notable tracks such as 'I Wanna Be Loved', a cover tune with a scorching vocal performance, and 'The Comedians,' which was covered by no less an authority than Roy Orbison.
The extended-play tracks shed more light on this phase of Costello's development, with tracks like 'Baby It's You' (a duet with old mate Nick Lowe) and 'Turning the Town Red' showing a more carefree pop feel than anything on the official album. More significant are a pair of tracks from Costello's first-ever solo tour, with 'Worthless Thing' and 'The Only Flame in Town' given a more direct lyrical emphasis. Fans can also take note of a rare Richard Thompson cover, 'Withered & Died', plus a 'lost' Costello single: 'I Hope You're Happy Now' which would show up with a radically different arrangement on BLOOD & CHOCOLATE.

Elvis Costello - King Of America (1986/2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

Artist: Elvis Costello
Title: King Of America
Genre: Rock, Rock & Roll, Americana, Folk Rock
Label: © Elvis Costello/Universal Music Group
Release Date: 1986/2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 192kHz/24bit
Source: highresaudio.com
Duration: 57:55
Recorded: Ocean Way, Sunset Sound & Sound Factory Studio, Los Angeles, 1985-86

Stripping away much of the excess that cluttered Punch the Clock and Goodbye Cruel World, Elvis Costello returned to his folk-rock and pub rock roots with King of America, creating one of his most affecting and personal records. Costello literally took on the album as a return to roots, billing himself by his given name Declan MacManus and replacing the Attractions with a bunch of L.A. session men (although his old band appears on one cut), who give the album a rootsy but sleek veneer that sounds remarkably charged after the polished affectations of his Langer/Winstanley productions. And not only does the music sound alive, but so do his songs, arguably his best overall set since Trust. Working inside the limits of country, folk, and blues, Costello writes literate, introspective tales of loss, heartbreak, and America that are surprisingly moving -- he rarely got better than 'Brilliant Mistake,' 'Glitter Gulch,' 'American Without Tears,' 'Big Light,' and 'Indoor Fireworks.' What separates King of America from the underrated Almost Blue is that Costello's country now sounds lived-in and worn, bringing a new emotional depth to the music, and that helps make it one of his masterpieces. --AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

In 1975 Paris discovered the four Czech musicians of the Talich Quartet and was dumbfounded by the depth of their harmony and the reach of their melody. The first recording followed a year later. The subject was Antonín Dvorák, the object the ‘American’ Quartet. An interpretation that has become legendary … Since then, the Talich Quartet has been characterised, both in record and in concert and through all its changes in personnel, by a specific tone, a particular sonority that has always riveted the attention. Now, with its poetic playing, its subtle, tender lyricism, the group returns at last to Dvorák with the Quartets nos.10 and 11. In their time, these two works enjoyed genuine popular success. They were played all over Europe, and gained Dvorák a reputation as one of the most important chamber music composers of his day. The Talich Quartet offers us here a chance to discover and appreciate these two masterpieces that have been unfairly overshadowed by the fame of the ‘American’ Quartet.
