Nat King Cole - Cole Espanol (1958/2013) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

Artist: Nat King Cole
Title: Cole Español
Genre: Jazz, Easy Listening, Traditional Pop, Vocal Jazz, Swing
Label: © Capitol Records
Release Date: 1958/2013
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 192kHz/24bit

Duration: 00:29:10
Recorded: February 17, 18, 20 in Havana, Cuba, June 11, 30, 1958 at Capitol Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California

Latin language recordings were common among American pop vocalists in the '50's. The singer would have to learn the words phonetically, a feat all the more impressive when one considers that at the time performances were almost always 'live' even in the studio.
In 1958, Nat went to Havana, Cuba and decided to record his first Latin American records. Seeing to the arrangements was no less than Nelson Riddle, but rather than impose his style, Nelson sought a more authentic orchestral flavor. The orchestra was under the able direction of Armando Romeu, Jr. and Mariachi de Alfredo Serna, with the results being unusually authentic for the genre. In this first album, the orchestras were recorded in Havana, Cuba, and Nat recorded his vocal later at the Tower. Nat's efforts at Latin American dialects doubtless sound strangely accented to anyone familiar with the appropriate languages, but there's no question that the sound and musicality of his voice and the efforts of Nelson, Armando and Alfredo come off fine.
Nat King Cole's beautiful sound translates across language barriers. This album was more proof. The most important factor though is probably just having an honest good nature come across, which anyone can appreciate. Nat and Capitol would encore twice, with A Mis Amigos and More Cole Espanol, and Latin and English speaking folks alike bought impressive amounts of all three albums.

Recorded: December 6-8, 2013 at Wavegarden Studio, Mitterretzbach, Lower Austria

Already at the end of the fifties the great Jazz pianist Bill Evans (1929 - 1980) was seen as "one of the most important pianists in today's music scene." It comes as no surprise at all that soon even Miles Davis appreciated his "sense of harmony and his lyricism". It was also quite unusual and controversial that Davis accepted him as the only white musician in his early sextet. After that, Evans, together with his piano trio, generally found his innermost and equally indicatory own form of expression. The result of this musical dialogue were style-forming concerts and recordings, based on the "use of individually coloured chord voicings", an "individual rhythm with a sort of subliminal, barely noticeable Swing", distinct dynamics, a nuanced touch and the subtle use of many stylistic devices from Jazz to classical music. Required qualification for this was, of course, a classical pianist training, but also a sort of linear vocal melody line that frequently orientated itself towards film music and the great composers of the "American Songbook". In that way, Bill Evans came to be one of the most influential pianists of modern Jazz in the studios and especially on concert stages. Evans - insecure and in bad health all his life - was a drug addict and finally died of the many resulting afflictions and diseases. Added to that, furthermore came tragedies in his entourage - the consequences were depression and increased drug use.
Giving musical honour to Evans, as also did John McLaughlin and Pat Metheny, was by no means a rarity but much more of a special challenge. To face this challenge and also live up to it needs a special sort of ability to combine technical mastering, experience and also emotion.

Lucy Rose - Work It Out (2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/44.1kHz

Artist: Lucy Rose
Title: Work It Out
Genre: Pop Rock, Indie, Folk Rock, Singer/Songwriter
Label: © Columbia Records
Release Date: 2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 44,1kHz/24bit

Duration: 01:02:11

Lucy Rose's sophomore album, Work It Out, marks appreciable changes for the singer/songwriter: it was recorded at London's Snap Studios instead of largely in her parents' living room, produced by Rich Cooper (Mark Knopfler, Mystery Jets), and embraces drums, keyboards, and pop production, in general, for a modified palette. The new direction is clearly a conscious one, moving from sparse, strummed acoustic indie folk to a driving, atmospheric, electronic sound, though all remains governed by Rose's foamy vocal delivery. More enlivened arrangements include persistent drums, mixed high on the uptempo, rhythm-focused "Köln," a song unlike anything on her debut. The shift is announced subtly at the start of the delicate opening track, "For You," which begins with soft strummed guitar, quietly humming keyboards, and slide guitar effects, until the song breaks open with full drums, synths, and echoing vocals two-thirds of the way through. (This type of development takes place on the eventually little bit funky "My Life" as well.) "Fly High (Interlude)" and "She'll Move" offer more ambient, reverb-loaded fare, the latter still beat-driven. Rose's wispy, reedy tone both limits the volume of any production and provides the charm that sets her apart from much of the Lilith Fair-variety crowd. Engaging songwriting, with lyrics mostly of the love variety here, also anchor her solidly in worthwhile territory -- Work It Out is far from a sellout-type effort. The move will surely attract some and alienate others, but her fragile, sometimes sultry carriage finds her more radio-ready without sacrificing distinctiveness. [A deluxe edition of Work It Out was issued simultaneously with five bonus tracks, including a live-in-studio version of Like I Used To's "Shiver."] --AllMusic Review by Marcy Donelson

Los Romeros & The Jaleo - World Of Flamenco: Guitars / Song / Dance / Poetry (1966/2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Recorded: December 27–30, 1966 at United Recording Studio, Hollywood, California

From the beginning of the 19th century at the very latest, the word 'flamenco' has been used to characterise songs and dances from Andalusia, and has become the very epitome of Spanish folkmusic. Although the origins of this regional music with its highly varied rhythms and emotional spirit have been lost in the annals of history, it very probably came under early Christian, Jewish, Moorish and American influences, so that one can speak here of 'world music' in the best sense of the word. Just as any Spanish guitarist worth his salt, the Romeros too put their heart and soul into performing flamenco. Flurrying notes taken at breakneck speed and explosive chords are just as typical for their playing as are gracefully plucked melodies and lyrical cantabile passages. The 'handmade' castanet rhythms in the background provide an authentic Andalusian drive. And of course songs of suffering and love are not to be missed here. This is the sound of Spain!
The present album contains a characteristic collection of alegrías, soleares, bulerías and tanguillos from the region of Cadiz, Cordoba and Seville. In addition there are lively dances such as the zapateado and rumba which are popular throughout the whole country. This top-notch double album is further enhanced by the inclusion of the sung texts and informative liner notes on each piece.

Hailed by the Chicago Tribune as a "vocalist of substance more devoted to song than to image,” Wright possesses a remarkable ability to sing in multiple styles, including soul, jazz and gospel. Produced by Larry Klein, her Concord debut Freedom & Surrender will feature a mix of cover songs along with collaborations with such noted songwriters as Klein, David Batteau, Maia Sharp, J.D. Souther, Toshi Reagon and Jesse Harris.
"Lizz is an extraordinary artist and we are very proud to welcome her to the Concord family,” said Mark Wexler, General Manager/Senior Vice President, Concord-Telarc Group. "We all look forward to working with her in this next chapter of her ever-evolving career."
Known for topping the jazz charts, Wright is far from most people's idea of a traditional jazz singer. She grew up in Georgia and began singing gospel music at a young age, thanks to her father, a pianist and musical director at the local church. She has been the recipient of nonstop critical acclaim and ever-increasing audiences ever since her Verve debut, Salt, in 2003. Dreaming Wide Awake followed in June 2005. Wright released her third album, The Orchard, in 2008. In 2010, Wright returned with Fellowship, featuring guest performances from bassist Meshell Ndegeocello and vocalist Angélique Kidjo.
