"But to me there is a broader and more personal attachment to each of the songs than the standard definition of romantic love might imply. I think that these songs represent the strength of love, including the love of family and friends. But rather than describing my own thoughts about each song, it is my hope that all of you who listen to the music and read the lyrics will discover and imagine your own personal "love scenes" among the mountains, oceans, rain and gardens of these songs." --Diana Krall

Louis Armstrong's counterpart at the piano was Earl Hines (1903), one of the few early heroes of jazz who was not born in Louisiana (he was born in Pennsylvania and in 1924 moved to Chicago). His technique augmented delicate virtuoso Armstrong-style moves with a rhythmic exuberance that set him apart from the tradition of Jelly Roll Morton. He was basically trying to play the piano like a trumpet or even a trombone.

Once Upon a Time is the sixth studio album by American singer Donna Summer. It was released on October 25, 1977 and peaked at number twenty-six on the US Billboard 200, number thirteen on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and number twenty-four on the UK Albums Chart. The entire album charted as one entry at number one on the Hot Dance/Disco chart. Once Upon a Time includes the singles "I Love You", "Fairy Tale High", "Once Upon a Time" and "Rumour Has It". The album was not as successful as Summer's previous album I Remember Yesterday, due mostly to its inability to spawn a hit-single as popular as "I Feel Love" and the enduring popularity of I Remember Yesterday and its singles.
The album was Summer's first double double album telling a modern-day Cinderella-themed story through means of disco music. The album's story concept was conceived by Joyce Bogart, Susan Munao and Donna Summer based on an idea by Al Bogatz. The songs were written in collaboration by Summer, Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte. The album was recorded at Musicland Studios, Munich with Summer's long-term collaborators and production team headed by producers Moroder and Bellotte. Arrangements were handled by Bob Esty while electronic arrangements were the work of Moroder. The artwork was designed by Stephen Lumel and Gribbitt! with photography by Francesco Scavullo.

Certain things are immutable in art and destined to endure over time—due either to the indestructible nature of their foundations or their perpetual renewal. When they express something primal, essential and stunningly beautiful, they are enriched by the highly qualified and talented individuals who serve them and uphold them. And when these individuals have given all they can, having devoted themselves fully to beauty, others come along to bear this centennial flame high so that it continues to blaze eternally.

Brahms was a severe critic of his own work, often assailed with uncertainty and reluctant to publish works he considered immature or incomplete. With the exception of the Scherzo in C flat for the Sonata F.A.E. he made his first violin solo work known to the public at only the age of 45 with the publication of the Concerto in D major, op. 77. Cheered by the great success he had had in the summer of that year, 1878, he set to work composing the first of his three splendid violin sonatas. They are the only ones we know, as three previous similar sonatas were destroyed by the composer himself. Brahms wrote these three masterpieces during three happy and fruitful summer holidays which he spent away from the city, inspired by the mountain scenery. Sonatas op. 78, 100 and 108 are full of lyricism and a lied quality which rarely gives way to virtuosity (in particular the first two), although they clearly reveal Brahms’ mastery in shaping thematic material, while at the same time creating a harmonious balance between the violin and the piano. The composer felt supremely confident with the piano and the instrument often takes the lead in melodic construction.

‘Only now have I learnt how to write quartets properly.’ So wrote Beethoven in 1801, having just finished his first set of string quartets at the surprisingly advanced age of 30: the competition of Haydn and Mozart must have been intimidating for the young composer. But these six Quartets op.18, which cost him great effort and extensive revision, already display much boldness and originality, from the dramatic echoes of Romeo and Juliet in no.1 to the astonishing programmatic finale of no.6, ‘La Malinconia’.
