Brahms was a severe critic of his own work, often assailed with uncertainty and reluctant to publish works he considered immature or incomplete. With the exception of the Scherzo in C flat for the Sonata F.A.E. he made his first violin solo work known to the public at only the age of 45 with the publication of the Concerto in D major, op. 77. Cheered by the great success he had had in the summer of that year, 1878, he set to work composing the first of his three splendid violin sonatas. They are the only ones we know, as three previous similar sonatas were destroyed by the composer himself. Brahms wrote these three masterpieces during three happy and fruitful summer holidays which he spent away from the city, inspired by the mountain scenery. Sonatas op. 78, 100 and 108 are full of lyricism and a lied quality which rarely gives way to virtuosity (in particular the first two), although they clearly reveal Brahms’ mastery in shaping thematic material, while at the same time creating a harmonious balance between the violin and the piano. The composer felt supremely confident with the piano and the instrument often takes the lead in melodic construction.

‘Only now have I learnt how to write quartets properly.’ So wrote Beethoven in 1801, having just finished his first set of string quartets at the surprisingly advanced age of 30: the competition of Haydn and Mozart must have been intimidating for the young composer. But these six Quartets op.18, which cost him great effort and extensive revision, already display much boldness and originality, from the dramatic echoes of Romeo and Juliet in no.1 to the astonishing programmatic finale of no.6, ‘La Malinconia’.

It is known for its demanding violin part, unusual length (a typical performance lasts slightly less than 40 minutes), and emotional scope - while the first movement is predominantly furious, the second is meditative and the third joyous and exuberant.

Virtuoso violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter created a sensation at Berlin’s Neue Heimat venue, recreating the impact of her legendary 2013 Yellow Lounge appearance, when she attracted one of the biggest crowds in the history of Deutsche Grammophon’s ground-breaking “classical-goes-clubbing” series. Now she’s pushing the electric atmosphere to the limit by making the first-ever live Yellow Lounge recording.
The ‎ground-breaking project, co-produced by Deutsche Grammophon and ZDF, is set for global release in August, with German TV broadcasts in the summer and autumn, and a special documentary to follow in 2016.
Deutsche Grammophon President Mark Wilkinson welcomed Mutter’s return to the Yellow Lounge: “Last night, in Berlin, a part of classical music changed for ever. Anne-Sophie Mutter is breaking down boundaries, and taking risks without compromising her art – ultimately pushing on a door through which we hope others will follow.”
On stage with Mutter were her longtime accompanist Lambert Orkis, the Mutter Virtuosi – a hand-picked ensemble of young alumni of the Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation – and star harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani, whose solo debut with Deutsche Grammophon is released this month. The programme spanned three centuries of classical music – from Bach and Vivaldi to Gershwin and John Williams – and was conceived by the violinist exclusively for this Yellow Lounge event and the accompanying album.
Yellow Lounge fuses the classical world and club culture, combining performances from stars of the former with cutting-edge DJ and VJ sets in urban spaces. On turntables this time were DJs Clé and Canisius, who’ve worked numerous Yellow Lounges, as has world-renowned VJ Philipp Geist, who was responsible for the stunning visuals.

“American Anthem is a testament to our nation’s great composers, and one of the year’s most powerful chamber-music recordings.”—Strings magazine
American Anthem: The Music of Samuel Barber & Howard Hanson Sono Luminus has come together again with the amazing talent of the Ying Quartet, and is excited to release American Anthem: The Music of Samuel Barber & Howard Hanson. Bringing together musical selections that are truly expressive of the American spirit, this album also includes a selection from American composer Randall Thompson, and features pianist Adam Neiman and baritone Randall Scarlata. The package will be a 2-disc set, containing a Pure Audio Blu-ray™ Surround Sound disc as well as a standard CD.
What makes American music American? There have been many answers to that debate, both in music and in words. Samuel Barber was a composer who did not aim to write “American” music. Though Barber was born and raised in West Chester, PA, many observers note that he seemed equally if not more at home in Europe, in particular Italy and England. In fact, Gian Carlo Menotti, his longtime partner, said in an interview that Barber did not believe in being American and was not interested in Americana. Barber himself once criticized other composers’ works saying, “A collage of a little bit of this and that doesn’t make American music American.” And yet, now Barber is considered one of the most celebrated—certainly one of the most performed and recorded—American composers of all.
On the other hand, Howard Hanson has been described by some as, “the greatest protagonist for American music that has ever lived.” Indeed, in addition to his own compositions, Hanson claimed to have premiered over 2000 works by American composers through his Festivals of American Music, first in California and then for many years in Rochester, NY. Though Hanson enjoyed considerable success with his works during his lifetime, his chamber music now is rarely performed. Hanson’s own answer to the question of what American music is was to say that American music is nothing more than music by American composers. On this disc, we are pleased to present the major string quartet works of these two very important figures in American music of the first half of the 20th century.

My True Story finds Aaron Neville exploring the music he grew up with and adding a variety of twists along the way. The iconic soul/R&B vocalist and multi-GRAMMY® Award winner is making his debut on Blue Note Records. Produced by Don Was and Keith Richards, the album is a collection of twelve classic doo-wop tracks, sung by Neville’s spine-tingling vocals. Musicians on the album include Keith Richards, Greg Leisz (Beck, Sheryl Crow), Benmont Tench (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), George G. Receli (Bob Dylan) and Tony Scherr (Bill Frisell, Norah Jones). Neville hand-selected each track on My True Story, which features tunes by Little Anthony and the Imperials (“Tears On My Pillow”), Hank Ballard and the Midnighters (“Work With Me Annie”) and The Drifters (“Money Honey,” “Under The Boardwalk,” “This Magic Moment”). To Neville, though, these songs weren’t just the soundtrack to his youth; they became the underpinning for all the remarkable music he has created across five decades.
