Recorded: September 2013 at Monkswood Studios in Waltham Abbey, UK

This recording aims to cast a spotlight on some of the remarkable, yet forgotten music written for the solo violin between c.1840 and 1919. The long shadow of JS Bach and his own Partitas and Sonatas for Solo Violin looms over some of the works contained on this disc, yet many of the movements liberate themselves from this influence, displaying a resourcefulness and an array of moods that draw the listener into what can otherwise be the precariously narrow sound world of the solo violin. Many of the pieces have never been recorded before and some, particularly the Second Godard Sonata and Saint-Lubin Fantaisie, deserve to take their place beside Bach, Bartók and Ysaÿe as interesting additions to the central works in the solo violin repertoire.

DSD file created by Gus Skinas from the original DSD audio used to create the existing SACD.
"I listened to the DSD files available from SHR and was astonished by the resolution. From the carefully tuned drum fills, the spotless piano accents, and the layered vocal harmonies, nearly every song is a clinic in the art of engineering a hit record. Had I not known any better, I would have sworn I was listening to mastertapes. Pop nostalgia at its best." — Neil Gader, The Absolute Sound, March 2015.
The greatest songs from one of the greatest vocal duos. The Carpenters crafted beautiful, light and airy tunes with meticulous arrangements. All of the memorable ones are included here.

Terri Lyne Carrington - The Mosaic Project: Love and Soul (2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/44.1kHz

Artist: Terri Lyne Carrington
Title: The Mosaic Project: Love and Soul
Genre: Jazz, R&B, Crossover Jazz, Jazz Pop
Label: © Concord Music Group, Inc.
Release Date: 2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 44,1kHz/24bit

Duration: 01:05:29

When powerhouse drummer and composer Terri Lyne Carrington launched her Mosaic Project back in 2011, her motivation was to celebrate "the artistry of many women I had worked with and felt a sisterly bond with, women that were close friends and musical partners." Her cast included a star-studded host of players and singers such as Anat Cohen, Patrice Rushen, Sheila E., Esperanza Spalding, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Carmen Lundy, Cassandra Wilson, and Dianne Reeves. Love And Soul features appearances by many of the original players as well as new ones, including bassists Linda Oh and Meshell Ndegeocello, violinist Regina Carter, and completely different singers. "I'm a Fool to Want You" was co-written by Frank Sinatra and is just as closely associated with Billie Holiday (both had centennial birthdays in 2015). Here it is completely reimagined as a slippery, summery pop-soul song rendered beautifully by Chaka Khan. Duke Ellington's "Come Sunday" is given a cosmic soul treatment with a triple-timed funky drum-and-bass attack with sparkling, spacy Rhodes and wah-wah guitars. Natalie Cole emerges from the wash with its melody intact. Ashford & Simpson's classic "Somebody Told a Lie" is fronted by Valerie Simpson herself, in a chart that melds woodwinds, strings, a melodic bassline, and laid-back breakbeats. But classics aside, Carrington's tunes are some of the best on the set. "Imagine This" is framed inside a futurist treatment (think of the Foreign Exchange or Sa-Ra collectives) set apart by a chart that makes deliberate room for Nancy Wilson's iconic, classy style. "This Too Will Pass" weaves together pop, Isley Brothers-styled soul, and rock with Lalah Hathaway guiding the band with a smoky, throaty contralto. The sexy "Get to Know You"'s vocal showcase is Ledisi at her best. Ndegeocello's bassline is an expressive tonal counterpoint to the singer and an elastic companion for Carrington's drums. Rushen's "When I Found You" is the closer. It features the composer on Rhodes, Carter's violin, and a horn section backing Lizz Wright's lead. She digs into the lyric and then improvises with piano, guitar, and trumpet as the drummer pushes the ensemble to the creative edge. Mosaic Project fans will appreciate Love And Soul's exceptionally sophisticated take on R&B. Fans of Robert Glasper and José James should take note, too. Carrington has proven on all of her outings that she knows exactly what she wants and how to get it -- from any group of musicians. This one is no exception. --AllMusic Review by Thom Jurek

Serge Gainsbourg - Aux Armes Et Caetera (1979) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Artist: Serge Gainsbourg
Title: Aux Armes Et Caetera
Genre: Reggae, Roots Reggae, French Pop
Label: © Mercury Records
Release Date: 1979
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit
Source: ProStudioMasters
Duration: 33:16
Recorded and mixed at Dynamic Sounds Studio, Kingston, Jamaïca, 12 to 24 January 1979

Gainsbourg’s 1979 release Aux Armes Et Caetera, an album entirely recorded in Kingston with legendary reggae musicians, takes French song where it had never geographically or musically gone before. In retrospect, we might be tempted to dismiss this cover of the French national anthem; after all, Gainsbourg had already borrowed other musical genres like jazz and disco. Yet, while Gainsbourg’s previous work had earned him recognition as a major innovator of French song somewhat because of his playful and provocative eccentricities, this song was met with a scathing, overtly anti-Semitic and nationalist backlash. Gainsbourg’s play with genres (national anthem, French song, and reggae) touched on sour spots of French identity.

Rush - Moving Pictures (1981/2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

Artist: Rush
Title: Moving Pictures
Genre: Rock, Prog Rock, Hard Rock
Label: © Mercury Records
Release Date: 1981/2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 192kHz/24bit
Source: 7digital.com
Duration: 40:04
Recorded: October - November 1980 at Le Studio, Morin Heights, Quebec

Moving Pictures is the intersection between Rush’s ’70s art-rock style and their sequencer-laced ’80s efforts. An incredible stylistic leap for the band, the songs here incorporate reggae, percolating synth and even a new wave-tinged early ’80s pop sensibility. ‘Tom Sawyer,’ the ultimate alienated-teen saga, is the album’s best known song. ‘Red Barchetta’ picks up where 2112 left off with futuristic, sci fi-oriented lyrics. The instrumental ‘YYZ’ is as far into straight-up progressive rock as the band had ever ventured. Things get socio-political on the ominous ‘Witch Hunt,’ and a Jamaican flavor enlivens ‘Vital Signs.’ The increased reliance on synthesizers and sequencers would later become irksome to old school Rush fans, but on ‘Moving Pictures’, electronics are tastefully applied to further the group’s musical vision, making for what just might be their finest batch of songs.
