Los Angeles brat-pop band, HOLYCHILD debut full-length album, The Shape of Brat Pop to Come, is out June 2nd via Glassnote Records. Their debut album features single, Running Behind.
HOLYCHILD formed in college, found their artistic inclinations were in sync, and began making music together. Sure, there’s more to that story—a long trail of events that stretches from New York art galleries to the sun-baked streets of Los Angeles, where the duo now lives. But both members, Liz Nistico and Louie Diller, are far more concerned with the “why” behind their twisted electro pop creations than the “how” of where they are today.
Although in the past they have described their music as the halfway point between Katy Perry and Björk, the pair is more likely to name-check F. Scott Fitzgerald, Hemingway and Bukowski when describing their glittery dance tunes. The classic authors subverted the written form in order to make readers question their assumptions—why can’t they do the same thing with music? HOLYCHILD call their genre of music, brat pop. Their manifesto is simple but intense.
“It’s experimental pop, it’s often sarcastic, and it’s pretty thick with social commentary,” says Nistico. “If you make music within pop form, and just having poppy melodies, people are used to consuming that. People will consume that easily with no difficulty. If you are saying something beyond that, that’s when you can make people think. We definitely want to reach a very large audience and make them think differently, whether it be about gender roles, or the social economic status of the U.S. right now.”
But don’t expect HOLYCHILD to waste too much time preaching. From touring alongside the likes of Passion Pit and MØ, to turning NYC's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) into an electro pop rave, they’re out to make the kind of music that’s aimed in equal parts at the intellect and lust.
“I feel like it’s safe to say, brat pop is one-half rebellion and one-half entertainment,” adds Diller. “We’re not in it to spoon-feed people, but we are in it to entertain, put on a show, make people happy and make people move.”
On their debut album The Shape Of Brat Pop to Come, the pair takes on nothing less than the ideas of power dynamics and inequality—be it racial, social status, or gender-motivated. The beats are wild (thanks in no small part to Diller’s stint in Cuba studying Afro-Cuban drumming), and the tongues are placed firmly in cheek.
“On one hand we use sex to sell things,” she muses. “We’re drawing people in by being like, “Look! Sex sex sex!’ And then raising the thought of, ‘Sex sells! Why do you buy into that?’ That concept is really fascinating to me. It’s definitely hypocritical, but at the same time I feel like we’re all hypocrites.”
Nistico assures that while their message is clear, it’s not definitive. After all, we’re all humans, right? At the end of the day HOLYCHILD is about posing questions—not providing answers.

Hirundo Maris is Latin for “sea swallow” and, like that bird’s flight, harpist Arianna Savall’s quintet – part early music ensemble, part folk group – drifts on musical currents between Norway and Catalonia, and adds its own songs, created on the wing. Savall and co-leader Petter Udland Johansen have shaped a band with a bright, glistening timbral blend, capped by Arianna’s ice-clear voice, well-equipped to address songs of the north and the south.

Heads of State, featuring four of the most respected and admired jazz artists of our time releases its first recording Search for Peace. A band over 50 years in the making, Gary Bartz, Larry Willis, Buster Williams, and Al Foster had performed together countless times in different combinations and contexts over their storied careers, but it wasn’t until September 2014 that they appeared as a quartet. The occasion that night was a tribute to McCoy Tyner, and the results were so inspired and the response so overwhelming that they knew right away they had something worth keeping. As pianist Larry Willis puts it, “I don’t think there are any bands that are doing quite what we’re doing right now.” Now, their unique chemistry and musicianship is documented on Search for Peace. It features selections by John Coltrane (“Impressions”), Jackie McLean (“Capuchin Swing”), Benny Carter (“Summer Serenade”), Billy Strayhorn (“Lotus Blossom”) and, of course, the moving title track by Tyner (“Search for Peace”) Gary Bartz contributes two compositions (“Uncle Bubba” which Gary performed with McCoy and “Soulstice”) and there are two standards (“Crazy She Calls Me” and “I Wish I Knew” which Tyner famously recorded with Coltrane). It is a well-chosen and balanced set, but the selections are somewhat beside the point; this all-star quartet makes everything sound like magic.

Grace Jones, one of the most innovative and charismatic artists in the distinguished history of Island Records, is to have her first three albums for the label released as the 3CD, 4LP, Blu-ray Audio and digital sets titled ‘Grace Jones – Disco.’
The packages, out on May 4, comprise the first three Island releases by the Jamaican entertainer, 1977’s ‘Portfolio,’ the following year’s ‘Fame’ and the 1979 release ‘Muse,’ augmented with rare and unheard recordings.
All three of the albums were produced by one of the most influential mixers and producers in the formative days of the disco boom, Tom Moulton. Each of the discs was rooted in the dance milieu of the late 1970s, before Jones’ transition to the reggae flavours of her later crossover success.
‘Portfolio’ was released in the year that the former model signed with Island, and featured interpretations of some show tunes and standards including ‘Send In The Clowns,’ ‘Tomorrow’ and ‘La Vie En Rose.’ The album enjoyed top ten success in Italy and Holland.
‘Fame,’ released only nine months later, was recorded at Sigma Sound in Philadelphia, repeating the previous album’s formula of a continuous medley on side one. It also contained an interpretation of the vintage ballad ‘Autumn Leaves.’ Jones, who had one co-write on each of the first two releases, co-wrote two songs on ‘Muse,’ which also featured the single ‘On Your Knees.’

Eric Reed - Groovewise (2014) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/48kHz

Artist: Eric Reed
Title: Groovewise
Genre: Jazz
Label: © Smoke Sessions Records
Release Date: 2014
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 48kHz/24bit

Duration: 58:53
Recorded live at Smoke Jazz Club, New York City, September 6, 7, 2014

ERIC REED DIDN’T WANT TO MAKE A GOOD RECORD, he wanted to make a great one. The celebrated pianist and musician says, “I could have called guys who play exactly what I want; it would have been good and not very interesting. It would have been swinging or it would have sounded nice—there wouldn’t have really been a spark. You don’t just want to sound good. You want it to be amazing.” And, his Groovewise is that killing record. It features a memorable quartet with Seamus Blake, Ben Williams, and Gregory Hutchinson and is the first recorded meeting of Reed and Hutchinson in over 15 years. They are clearly inspired performing in front of a live audience and the creative energy flies off the bandstand. They open with an impromptu rendition of “Powerful Paul Robeson” for Clifford Jordan whose wife, Sandy, who was in attendance and they close with the extended title track “Groovewise” bracketing a thrilling set of live jazz. Several of the compositions are dedicated to the memories of Mulgrew Miller, Cedar Walton, and Marian McPartland and Eric’s “Until the Last Cat has Swung,” is a declaration that jazz remains alive and well in the hands of a new generation. Although Eric might not feel ready to be a “keeper of the flame,” jazz music is much better off that he already is. Groovewise is available for purchase as an 8-panel CD-Deluxe Album complete with liner notes, interview and additional photos or as a high resolution download mastered for iTunes.

After important contributions to Heinz Holliger’s “Romancendres” and acclaimed performance, with Carolin Widmann, of Schumann’s Violin Sonatas, here is the first New Series solo recording from Hungarian pianist Dénes Várjon. It is a recital that draws the listener in from the first moments – beginning with the dark, brooding language of Alban’s Berg’s Piano Sonata Op. 1, shaped in the shadow of Schoenberg, and continuing into the nebulous regions of Janáček’s impressionistic and near-contemporaneous “In the mists”, finally emerging into the clear light of Liszt’s immense - and immensely-influential - B-minor Sonata.

Claude Debussy - Preludes, Livres I & II - Philippe Bianconi (2012) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Artist: Philippe Bianconi

Label: © La Dolce Volta

Recorded: Paris on February 2012 (Église de la rue Titon)

Philippe Bianconi has achieved recognition as one of France’s most accomplished instrumentalists despite his reluctance to embrace the capital. The interpretion of French music has always been of great importance in his repertoire.

"Debussy has always been part of my life" says the pianist about the composer so close to his heart.
Discophiles have been impatiently awaiting his recording of the towering Préludes, but Philippe Bianconi has taken his time before entering the studio to capture what he calls “the quintessence of Debussy’s art”. Beneath his fingertips, which conjugate a profound attention to detail with an irresistible poetic imagination, the art of Claude de France reveals all its riches and its startling modernity.

The enchanting sonorities and the density of Philippe Bianconi’s interpretation make his new CD a major addition to the list of great versions of the Préludes, enhanced by the exceptional sound quality of the recording itself, to which the pianist has devoted particular attention.

Death Cab for Cutie - Kintsugi (2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Artist: Death Cab for Cutie
Title: Kintsugi
Genre: Indie Rock, Indie Pop, Alternative
Label: © Atlantic Records/Barsuk Records
Release Date: 2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit
Source: Qobuz
Duration: 00:45:07
Recorded: Eldorado Recording Studios

Death Cab for Cutie's eighth full-length album, 2015's Kintsugi, finds the group sliding further into the studio smoothness that marked 2011's Codes and Keys. Produced by Rich Costey -- best-known for his work with Kimbra, Mew, Muse, Interpol, and Chvrches -- Kintsugi is also the last album Death Cab recorded with co-founding member Chris Walla, who announced he was leaving the band during the recording process. Sentiment has always been lead singer/songwriter Ben Gibbard's calling card, but as he starts to stare down the corridor to 40, he seems comfortable with leaving that open heart unadorned -- or, better still, gussied up in a coat of studio shellac. Although there are fragile solo numbers dotted throughout the album, most of Kintsugi shimmers upon a gloss constructed out of new wave remnants and faded memories of yacht rock. Conceivably, Gibbard's intent hews toward the latter -- such clean disco-rock diversions as "Good Help (Is So Hard to Find)" and the galloping collegiate rock echoes of "El Dorado" show a yen for art -- but his open heart nudges Kintsugi toward new millennial soft rock. This is a feature, not a bug. Gibbard has a gentle touch so having cushy, sugary melodies mirrored by a production equally as supple feels like a marriage of intent and sound. --AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

David Torn - Only Sky (2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/44.1kHz

Artist: David Torn
Title: Only Sky
Genre: Jazz, Modern Jazz, Avant-Garde Jazz, Experimental Rock, Sound Sculpture, Structured Improvisation
Label: © ECM Records GmbH | ECM Player | ECM Reviews
Release Date: 2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 44,1kHz/24bit
Source: Qobuz
Duration: 01:16:10
Recorded: February 2014 at the EMPAC Concert Hall, Troy, NY and Cell Labs, NY

David Torn – ever-intrepid guitarist, producer, improviser, film composer and soundscape artist – returns with only sky, an album that explores the far sonic edges of what one man and a guitar can create, a solo recording of almost orchestral atmosphere. It is Torn’s first ECM release since 2007’s acclaimed prezens, a full-band project, with Tim Berne, et al., that Jazzwise described as “a vibrating collage full of shimmering sonic shapes, a dark, urban electronic soundscape – a potent mix of jazz, free-form rock and technology that is both demanding and rewarding. ”Many of those same descriptors apply to only sky, with its hovering ambient shadows and vaulting flashes of light, its channeling of deep country/blues memories and Burroughsian dreams of North Africa. Recorded in the acoustically apt hall of the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center in upstate New York (and then sorted and mixed in Torn’s own mad-scientist lair), only sky is an album to get lost in, over and again.
