Carly Simon - Hello Big Man (1983/2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/192kHz

Artist: Carly Simon
Title: Hello Big Man
Genre: Pop Rock, Soft Rock, Singer/Songwriter
Label: © Warner Bros. Records
Release Date: 1983/2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 192kHz/24bit
Source: HDTracks
Duration: 39:36
Recorded: Power Station Studios, New York City

Originally released in 1983, „Hello Big Man“ was Carly Simon's final album for Warner Brothers Records. Following 1981's well-reviewed but commercially lackluster collection of jazz and pop standards „Torch“, „Hello Big Man“ was another unexpected stylistic detour, featuring Simon recording with the pioneering reggae rhythm section of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. While the resulting music bears an obvious reggae influence (most particularly on a cover of Bob Marley's 'Is This Love?'), the overall effect has more in common with slightly younger and more stylistically experimental singer-songwriters such as Joan Armatrading and Rickie Lee Jones. Unfortunately, for all their quirky charms, the album and its single, 'You Know What To Do,' were both commercial failures. The budget-line reissue from Rhino Flashback features remastered sound.

The symphony was completed on September 29, 1946, barely in time for its premiere by Serge Koussevitzky and the Boston Symphony Orchestra on October 18 of that year. The score bears a dedication “To the memory of my dear friend Natalie Koussevitzky.”

Cheap Trick - All Shook Up (1980/2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Artist: Cheap Trick
Title: All Shook Up
Genre: Rock, Pop Rock, Hard Rock, Power Pop
Label: © Epic Records
Release Date: 1980/2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit
Source: HDTracks
Duration: 34:15
Recorded: 1980, Air Studios, Montserrat and London

Cheap Trick's first genuinely disappointing album (1979's Dream Police wasn't bad, it just wasn't up to the level of the first four), 1980's All Shook Up is pretty much a complete botch. Much of the blame belongs to producer George Martin, who, for all his brilliance, was simply a wrongheaded choice for these brash power poppers; his production style simply doesn't translate. Unfortunately, primary songwriter Rick Nielsen has to shoulder his portion of the blame as well: the band's sixth album in under four years shows that the guitarist is starting to run out of both hooks and interesting lyrics. Too many songs are based around half-baked braggadocio like "High Priest of Rhythmic Noise" and "World's Greatest Lover," without the snarky wit that elevated their earlier albums, and the tunes themselves are substandard boogie deficient in both head-bobbing riffs and singalong choruses. "Baby Loves to Rock" is a glad-handing rocker with a certain resemblance to T. Rex's classic string of hits, but it's not enough to save the album. --AllMusic Review by Stewart Mason

Antonio Caldara - Trio Sonatas - Amandine Beyer, Leila Schayegh (2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Сomposer: Antonio Caldara (c1670-1736)
Artist: Amandine Beyer, Leila Schayegh, Jörg-Andreas Bötticher, Jonathan Pesek, Matthias Spaeter
Title: Caldara: Trio Sonatas
Genre: Classical
Label: © Glossa
Item Number: GCD 922514
Release Date: 2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit

Recorded: in St. Gerold (Voralberg, Austria) on 5-7 May 2014

Two former students of the Schola Cantorum in Basel, both now captivating audiences each with their individual violinistic artistry, Amandine Beyer and Leila Schayegh, join forces for a new SCB recording devoted to the trio sonata music of Antonio Caldara, and issued with Glossa.

Though he is known now (as for much of his life) primarily as a composer of oratorios and operas, the Venetian Caldara made his name penning early examples of the trio sonata form; his Opp. 1 and 2 sets were published in 1693 and 1699 respectively. Caldara’s Op. 1 Trio Sonatas are characterized by their contrasting use of fast and slow movements, those from the second set by their incorporation of dances. Yet Caldara’s melodic gift – which was to serve him so well in his musical posts in various Italian states, in Barcelona, and as vice-Kapellmeister at the Imperial Court in Vienna – is already evident in Beyer and Schayegh’s selection from his instrumental publications; the composer was also already noted as a virtuoso of the cello – and he also played the violin and keyboard, and the awareness of all these instruments is greatly evident in these trio sonatas.

The continuo team here is made up of Jonathan Pesek, cello, Jörg-Andreas Bötticher, harpsichord and organ, and Matthias Spaeter, liuto attiorbato. Beyer and Schayegh both were taught at the SCB by Chiara Banchini and are continuing their connection with the school as teaching successors to Banchini.

Cymin Samawatie, Cyminology - Phoenix (2015) High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 24bit/96kHz

Artist: Cymin Samawatie, Cyminology
Title: Phoenix
Genre: Jazz, Vocal Jazz, Modern Jazz, Contemporary Jazz
Label: © ECM Records GmbH | ECM Player
Release Date: 2015
Quality: High-Fidelity FLAC Stereo 96kHz/24bit
Source: Qobuz
Duration: 00:49:36
Recorded: March 2014, Rainbow Studio, Oslo

German-Iranian singer Cymin Samawatie and her band Cyminology continue on their unique course, allowing the subtle yet dynamic sounds and rhythms of Persian poetry to influence their compositions and improvisation. Phoenix is their third disc for ECM, like its predecessors (As Ney, 2008, and Saburi, 2010) produced by Manfred Eicher at Oslo’s Rainbow Studio. The core unit of Cymin, pianist Benedikt Jahnel, bassist Ralf Schwarz and drummer Ketan Bhatti are joined, for the first time on record, by Martin Stegner, the Berlin Philharmonic violist who has been a frequent collaborator since 2011. The viola, the string instrument closest to the human voice, becomes a kind of second singer here, extending the sense of East/West dialog alive in the music. The album is dedicated to the memory of Forough Farrokhzaad, the courageous and outspoken 20th century Iranian poet. Cymin sets some of Farrokhzaad’s verse here, alongside her own lyrics, classic Sufi poetry by Hafiz, and verse of Nima Yushij, often considered the father of modern Persian poetry. Jahnel, Schwarz and Bahti contribute as co-composers on several pieces.
